Greetings YMCA Model United Nations Advisors, Enclosed is the 2018 Model United Nations Advisor Handbook. It should have everything you need to get your group up and running this year. A few things to note: 1. The conference dates are March 22 nd and 23 rd, Conference fees for this year are $195. As usual, we have scholarships available for students who would not otherwise be able to attend. All standard scholarship students pay $95 and applications should be sent to irutledge@ymcagreenville.org. 3. Please note that country requests can be made as soon as you have them from your students. We will assign countries on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not request more countries than you will need so we will be able to give you enough, allowing for countries that get assigned to other schools. Please note, however, that if you can t get your country requests in until January (as some schools do Model UN as a second semester project) that is no problem. 4. In January, we will begin to select and train our high school resource staff, and if you would like them to visit your school/club meetings to help out, let us know and we ll make those arrangements. 5. We are continuing to look for new schools to be involved. If you are able to recruit a new school that brings at least 10 students, we will give your school a $250 credit to be used any way you see fit. Please contact us with schools and contact information, and we ll do the follow up. Finally, the most important thing we need from you is confirmation of your participation this year, and as good a guess as how many students you will be bringing. You can do this by filling out the Intent to Participate form here: We are required to sign a contract with the conference center committing us to a certain number of participants, and once we ve signed that contract we cannot drop below that number. We can add participants, but we will be charged for the contracted number regardless of their attendance. Please let us know if there is anything I can do to help you! Mary Capers Bledsoe Executive Director SC YMCA YIG, 100 Adams Mill Road, Simpsonville, SC Phone:

MIDDLE SCHOOL MODEL UNITED NATIONS BASICS WHAT? A two-day, one-night conference for middle school students on March 22 nd and 23 rd, Model UN is held at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly Center in Black Mountain, NC. HOW DO MY STUDENTS PARTCIPATE? First, determine the number you want to participate, and have them break into groups of 2-5. Each group chooses a country to represent. Students must fill out a registration form with parent and medical information. HOW WILL WE PREPARE? We want this to be a positive experience for your students, and a valuable tool to help with your class. To that end, the teacher is free to organize preparation in any manner he/she sees hit. For some schools, Model UN is an extracurricular club. For other schools, it s a classroom project. For some schools, it s a student council or leadership program. However, the school chooses to organize and select participants, each country group must do the following: Prepare a display on the country that includes information on the history, culture, government, geography and people of the country. We will provide the table for the display, and the students will bring project display boards, brochures, food, artifacts and other items to create the display. Write a resolution to be introduced by their country in one of the United Nations Councils, and perhaps, move on for consideration by the full General Assembly. This resolution should be on a topic that would legitimately be of concern to the country being represented. Study and create outfits that represent the native or traditional attire of the country. WHAT KIND OF HELP CAN WE EXPECT? If your middle school feeds a high school that has a Youth in Government program, we will work to provide trained high school students to participate in a service-learning program that will pair them with your school. If you do not feed a Youth in Government high school, we will work to provide college volunteers or YMCA staff to come to your school and assist with your preparation. WHAT IS THE COST? The per-child cost is $195, which includes three meals, lodging, program materials and a conference t-shirt. Financial assistance is available to qualifying students. There is no charge for teachers or adult chaperones within a 1-10 ratio.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CHECKLIST FOR PARTICIPATION GETTING STARTED 1. Recruit students. Model UN is open to any student, grades 6-8, at a participating school. Schools are free to set requirements for participation, but the YMCA does not have prerequisites. 2. Divide students (or have students divide themselves) into country groups. Country groups may be any size, but the suggested size is 2-5 students per country. (The most common size being 3-4 students per group.) 3. Select country requests. Refer to the ed list of Member States for countries. Countries that are marked through have already been assigned. Make a list of more countries that your school will need, since other schools may request the same countries before you. 4. Fill out the School Registration Form and have delegates complete the Delegate Registration Form and return to the YIG State Office ASAP. 5. Country groups prepare for the conference by doing the following: a. Researching their country b. Writing a resolution (see How to write a resolution ) c. Planning Festival of Nations Booth (see PLACARDS, FLAGS, NATIVE ATTIRE AND FESTIVAL OF NATIONS ) d. Planning Native Attire (see PLACARDS, FLAGS, NATIVE ATTIRE AND FESTIVAL OF NATIONS ) e. Making flag (see PLACARDS, FLAGS, NATIVE ATTIRE AND FESTIVAL OF NATIONS ) 6. resolutions to YIG Office in Word document. 7. Mail conference fees, rooming list and t shirt list. Depending on which lodgings your school is placed in, students will be housed two, three or four to a room. Please list students in pairs, and if you have preferences as to which pairs to put together in the event students are in four-person rooms, please indicate on the rooming list. (Advisors will always be two per room unless paying $85 for a private room). 14 DIRECTIONS FOR WRITING A RESOLUTION Use the enclosed Official Resolution Sheet format. Leave Council Assignment and Resolution Number blank. We ll fill that in when we get the resolution. List country, students names and school in the provided space. Title: This should be a one-sentence (or shorter) explanation of the resolution. Justification: This is the section that should explain why this resolution is being offered. This is where evidence of research should be seen. This is the area to put persuasive facts, statistics and arguments. Resolution for action: this is the meat of the resolution. What are you proposing? Be very specific and brief. NOTE: resolutions should be about an issue or problem that the country would legitimately be interested in. For instance, it s unlikely that Cuba would offer a resolution about promoting democracy worldwide. Nor would China offer a resolution for complete freedom of religion. THE RESOLUTION FORM MAY BE RECREATED ON SCHOOL OR STUDENT COMPUTER, AS LONG AS COMPONENTS ARE INCLUDED. Do not use unusual fonts or sizes. RESOLUTIONS ARE DUE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21 st, submissions in a Word document to irutledge@ymcagreenville.org.

PLACARDS, FLAGS, NATIVE ATTIRE AND FESTIVAL OF NATIONS 1. All participants must have a placard, which will be used to gain recognition to speak in Council and General Assembly. The placards should be made of white poster board. Four placards can be made from one piece of poster turned horizontally. The placard should be lettered with a black marker using block letters. It should have the student s last name, a dash, then his/her country. Please put this information on both sides. 2. Each country should make a replica of its flag. While some students have access to or are able to purchase a real flag, this is not necessary or even encouraged. Students may use a white pillowcase, and create the flag using markets or felt and flue. We will provide the flag poles. 3. Students should create some sort of native attire to represent their country. Students will wear the native attire for the Festival of Nations, and may wear it throughout the conference if they choose. 4. Festival of Nations Display. Each country will create a display on their country, which will be exhibited in the Festival of Nations. We will provide a table for each country. Most displays use a tri-fold foam board available at any office supply store. The displays may include food, artifacts, brochures, pictures or any other items that may provide information about the country being represented. Judges for Outstanding Festival of Nations display will look at the educational value of the display, the creativity, the knowledge of the participants, and the overall appeal of the booth. This does not have to be expensive, but instead should simply be creative and thorough. Also please make sure that your food items do not have nuts in them or have been cooked with nuts (e.g. Peanut Oil) for the safety of all who attend Model UN.

COUNTDOWN TO PARTICIPATION Below you will find an example of how to separate your meetings. This example can be broken up into more meetings based on the composition of your group. If you choose to separate your meetings differently that is completely up to you! MEETING ONE 1. Break up into groups of 2-5 students per group. Choose countries. Refer to List of Member States ed out, cross reference with list of countries already assigned. MEETING TWO 1. Begin researching country. This can be done by splitting up assignments among country group members, or by working together in the computer lab. Students want information on the following: a. Culture what kinds of music, art, food, crafts are part of their country s culture? b. Government what type of government does their country have? c. History What is the brief history of their country? d. Geography What is the land like? Any oceans or bodies of water? Mountains? Deserts? e. Current issues What are the most important current issues facing the country? f. Anything else Is there anything special that their country is famous for? (For instance Switzerland has chocolate; Brazil is known for its soccer; Egypt has the pyramids; etc. etc.) 2. Begin thinking about the Festival of Nations display and your native attire. MEETING THREE/FOUR 1. Resolution Time! Each group needs to write a proposal to be submitted from their country. This is kind of like a bill or legislation that would be submitted in Congress here in the United States, but it doesn t have to be quite so detailed. Typically, a proposal deals with a specific issue or problem in your country, and a possible solution to that problem. Most proposals are just one page. 2. Write your proposal. YMCA Youth in Government volunteers will be on hand to help you write your proposals. proposals to YMCA Youth in Government office. MEETING FIVE/SIX 1. Festival of Nations display! Start putting together your display. Most displays use the tri-fold foam board available at any office supply store. Students print pictures and information and attach them to the display board. Some Festival of Nations displays include food typical of their country; other displays include artifacts or handouts about their country. Use your creativity you don t have to spend a lot of money to have a great Festival of Nations display! 2. Native Attire Time to get creative planning your native attire. For some countries, this can be more challenging than others. But remember the key isn t to spend a bunch of money and have beautiful costumes. The key is getting creative and resourceful with your native attire. MEETING SEVEN 1. Make or purchase flags. We recommend using a standard white pillowcase for the flag (cut it in half, using one side of the pillowcase for one flag, the other side for a second flag.) Students can use paint, markers, felt whatever to make their country s flag. Flag poles will be provided at the conference. 2. Complete the Rooming List and return it to the YMCA Youth in Government office. 3. Go over the agenda, talk about what to expect, behavior, code of conduct, etc. 4. Practice presenting your proposal, and answering questions about it.
