2006 Natural Talent Design Competition Colorado Program Summary
OVERVIEW The USGBC Natural Talent 2007 Design Competition provides an applied learning experience in the principles of integrated design, passive design strategies, sustainability, innovation, and social consciousness; all of which are components of the LEED Green Building Rating System. Participants will compete to be one of five local finalists, the top winner of which will move on to compete for a national award at Greenbuild. Awards include registration to Greenbuild ( the USGBC s Annual Green Building Conference and Expo, where finalists entries will be displayed and where final judging will occur. Greenbuild 2007 will be held in Los Angeles, California, October of COMPETITION OBJECTIVES Broaden environmental education in the building professions within the university system To empower students and new professionals within the green building movement to become future leaders Highlight the presence, efforts, and initiative of students and emerging leaders in the green building movement Integrate emerging green builders with esteemed individuals from the USGBC and green building industry Raise awareness of exemplary designs of future designers by displaying them at Greenbuild Utilize the Hannover Principals, authored by McDonough and Braungart, as a guideline for design intent Utilize the USGBC s LEED framework as a metric for measuring building performance Explore effective ways to communicate design intent and execution Recognize and award students and emerging green builders for their dedication, creativity, innovation, and commitment to sustainable design ELIGIBILITY The Competition is open to all university level students (of any discipline and level) and individuals with less than five (5) years experience in the building industry. Both individuals and teams are permitted to enter. Multi-disciplinary teams are strongly encouraged. Teams are to be no larger than three individuals. Only one entry per team/person will be accepted. The Competition Committee encourages participants to seek a mentor from your university faculty or an industry professional to serve in an advisory role. Please check the USGBC Colorado Chapter website for a list of LEED Accredited Professionals in your area or contact Conor Merrigan conor_merrigan@yahoo.com, Emerging Green Builders Chair of your local USGBC chapter for help identifying an advisor. 2
REGISTRATION 1. Teams are required to complete an online registration form by visiting the Emerging Green Builders national website at only one form per team. All information must be complete to be considered a valid entry. A confirmation will be sent within five (5) business days of receiving the registration, and will contain information on how to proceed. Registration is mandatory to receive additional instruction on project submittals. 2. Teams are required to identify a team contact. This person will receive important information from the local competition committee and is responsible for final submission. The team contact will be responsible for all communication between the design team and the Local Competition Committee. Additionally, the team contact should disseminate all information from the Local Competition Committee to their entire team. 3. Each team/individual may only enter one local USGBC Natural Talent 2007 Design Competition. This competition should be the competition geographically closest to your current location. COMPETITION CHALLENGE CLIENT, CONTEXT & LOCATION Solar Energy International (SEI), located in the western slope of Colorado, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization whose mission is to help adults and youth apply renewable energy and environmental building technologies through education and technical assistance. SEI works cooperatively with individuals and organizations to meet energy and resource efficiency goals through classroom and on-site training workshops and provides expertise, equipment and personnel for planning, engineering and implementing sustainable development projects in Colorado and around the world. Since 1980, SEI personnel have taught hundreds of workshops to thousands of individuals. Solar Energy International's Renewable Energy Education Program (REEP) has pioneered a practical hands-on approach that has become the acknowledged benchmark for vocational training in renewable energy. In 2005, SEI purchased 7 acres of land in Paonia, Colorado, 60 miles from its home office in Carbondale, with the intention of creating a world-class learning/training center. The design and development of the campus will focus on creating an open space for reflection, aimed at organizing opportunities for people to share in the experience of renewable energy education and sustainable building design and interaction. The ethics involved will offer a framework for students to engage in the ever-present realities of energy decent, creative design and effective ways of living in balance with natural forces. Each summer, Solar Energy International conducts a workshop on Renewable Energy for Developing World, teaching how to implement renewable energies and sustainable building practices in rural areas in a sustainable way. Topics covered include technology transfer, setting up infrastructure, financing rural home systems, funding opportunities, and social and cultural issues. The subject of this competition will be to create a space that will serve as a forum for SEI students to engage in hands-on training with appropriate technologies. 3
This workshop experience is a precursor to the SEI INVEST (International Volunteers in Environmentally Sustainable Technologies) program. The INVEST program connects alumni of our renewable energy education program with appropriate organizations working in rural development. After successfully completing our workshops, alumni can volunteer in an international project helping to electrify rural communities with renewable energy, build sustainable houses, and train local users and technicians. For more information, visit the SEI website at Individual site visits are encouraged. To schedule a visit, contact Matthew Harris at SEI at (970) or matthew@solarenergy.org. The site is located at Mathews Lane, Paonia, Colorado. PROJECT Design a net carbon neutral multi-use building for the Solar Energy International (SEI) 1 Eco- Campus utilizing principles and practices of sustainable design. As part of the SEI Developing World Village, this project will allow SEI to expand its rural development education program and further its mission of working with grassroots and development organizations to meet sustainable development goals with renewable energies. It is SEI s goal for this project to be an embodiment of the Hannover Principals, authored by McDonough and Braungart. These principals will guide the design team through determining project goals and considering the project s potential effects, both immediate and wide-ranging, with respect to both time and place? The USGBC s LEED Rating System will be used to measure the specific sustainable design strategies employed as they relate to site, water, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Participants should become familiar with the intent behind each of these guidelines and use them to identify strategies that are most appropriate and beneficial to the project. The teams should also have a clear understanding of the structure s process of creation and construction. The objective of the competition is to emphasize creativity while designing a structure that addresses both the environmental impact and social context. As an educational tool, it is vital that this building and the presentation of your design are able to effectively engage, and even challenge, the green building community. Because there are multiple interpretations to the definition of sustainability and the associated vocabulary used within the green building industry, part of the challenge of this competition is to establish a syntax that best communicates the meaning and purpose of your design process and design concept. Participants are asked to explore the meaning behind the vocabulary provided and choose their means of communication in the competition submittal with purpose and intent. PROGRAM Size: Use: Approximately 300 sf Living quarters to accommodate up to two people, including a kitchen and bathroom Workspace to accommodate art, craft, and study Training for courses on renewable energy and natural building techniques and performance 1 4
DESIGN GOALS Evaluation criteria at both the Colorado and the National level will be: Conceptual design and program fulfillment: how the project s vision has met the requirements Integration of sustainable design strategies Creativity in process, design and innovation Engagement of environmental, social, and economic aspects of program and site Integration of green design strategies and applicability to LEED criteria Evaluation criteria specific to local judging will be: Application of the Hannover Principals, authored by McDonough and Braungart, and the USGBC s LEED framework Effective communication of design intent and execution SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS There will be two phases of judging. The first will take place at the local level in Denver in early June by the client, SEI, and selected members of the USGBC Colorado Chapter community. Judging at the national level will take place at Greenbuild in LA, CA in October by an esteemed panel of green building experts. Finalists should submit, but are not limited to, two 30 x40 presentation boards and one physical model for judging in at the local level. Submission requirements for the Colorado competition include: 1 board describing the overall design concept and a descriptive list of the buildings sustainable design features. This board should include: o Statement of intent o Description of design process o Description of design product o Vocabulary words and determined definitions chosen to best describe intent, process, and product o LEED scorecard reflecting the design goals 1 additional board presenting more detail on the participants chosen area of interest within their specific field of expertise 1 three dimensional representation of the design concept or product Each entry must also provide a digital file of each board and the model in PDF format fit to print at 11 x17 Judging will occur in a jury format open to members of the USGBC Colorado Chapter. Participants are encouraged to hang and present their work in person. If they are not able to attend, arrange for your work to be hung (please contact us for assistance) and provide a video or narrative description of their work to be presented in their absence. All entries must remain anonymous at all levels and team names should be included on the back of boards. Failure to follow the submission requirements could result in disqualification. This will be left up the judges discretion. 5
Deadline for Colorado digital submissions is Friday, June 1, 2007, 12:00pm. Images must arrive on CD at the designated location (TBA) by this time. Entrants are responsible for ensuring both boards and models are physically present for the Jury in Denver, CO for display and final judging, date and time TBA. No submissions will be accepted after this date and time. Finalists at the local level will be given additional time to develop and detail their designs, however, they cannot be redesigned and there must be a clear relation to the original submission. Finalists will be permitted two 30 x40 presentation boards for final presentation at Greenbuild. Submission requirements for the national level will be: At minimum, 2 boards must be submitted at the national level and include: o Building Section o Floor plan o Illustration of key elements of sustainable infrastructure and building systems o Wall section OR detail illustrating special environmental features o Do not include names or the name of your team on the board All entries must remain anonymous at all levels. Each entry must also provide a digital file of the image fit to print at 11 x17. Failure to follow the submission requirements could result in disqualification. This will be left up the judges discretion. An electronic copy of the two boards for entry will be due to the National EGB Competition Committee October 1, Entrants are responsible for ensuring both boards are physically present at the Greenbuild Conference and Expo in LA, CA for display and final judging by October 16, 2007, 9:00am. Boards must arrive at the designated location at the Denver Convention Center by this time. No submissions will be accepted after this date and time. This will be coordinated with the National EGB Committee toward the end of September. Finalists are strongly encouraged to attend Greenbuild but are not required to. All projects in the final round of judging will also be posted to the Emerging Green Builders Website. Other important notes: Designs do not need to be engineered for construction. You should be mindful of conventional design practices, although no other codes other than ADA need to be explicitly met (i.e. local building code, IBC or UBC, fire code, etc.). LEED is a design guideline only. It is understood that this will not portray an accurate LEED score. No LEED credit interpretation rulings will be provided. AWARDS The local jury will award a first, second and third place, as well as two Honorable Mention Awards. Winning teams will receive the following awards: o 1 st Place: $1,000 and registration for the Greenbuild conference in October 2007 o 2 nd Place: $500 o 3 rd Place: $250 o 4 th and 5 th : Honorable mentions 6
National awards are as follows: o 1 st Place: $5,000 o 2 nd Place: $2,000 DISCLAIMER Both the local and the National EGB Committee reserve the right to refuse any entry. The USGBC is not liable for lost or misdirected, late or substantially incomplete entries, as well as any entries containing text/images that identify the designer to jurors. The decisions and opinions of the jurors represent their professional viewpoints, not the opinion of USGBC. All prizes will be awarded at the discretion of USGBC and all decisions are final. All drawings, photographs, photocopies and other physical materials submitted to the competition become the property of the USGBC and will not be returned. It should be emphasized that this competition is purely conceptual, and the selection of finalists or prizewinners in no way indicates intent of the property owners to implement the proposed schemes. Upon registering for this competition, all competitors agree to waive any and all claims against the USGBC as a result of the competition. Also, by registering, the entrants transfer unlimited use for publication, exhibition and electronic posting of all entries to the USGBC. All images must either be created by the team or sufficiently cited. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. Fill out and return the Image Use Form found on the national EGB website prior to submitting for your local competition.
