2 Developing graduates ready for life and work Careers and Employability collaborates with Colleges, Schools, Employers, Alumni and key stakeholders on a range of key curricular, co-curricular and employment services and activities that help build employability so that graduates are ready for life and work. Career Development Learning in the Curriculum Our approach Careers and Employability in Melbourne and the Career and Employment Service in Vietnam undertake a major role in supporting RMIT University s strategic goals to enhance student employability, increase graduate employment outcomes and ensure students are ready for life and work. The careers services work in close collaboration with Colleges, Schools, Centres and other key stakeholders to provide a range of services, events and programs for students and staff that support employment, entrepreneurial, co-curricular and work integrated learning (WIL) activities. Proactive engagement with employers and alumni is an integral part of the work to support graduate outcomes. 3 Achievements Winner of the Victorian International Education Award 2015 for Excellence in International Student Employability and Career Development. Implementation of the Future Edge co-curricular program in Melbourne and Personal Edge in Vietnam. Significantly increased careers awareness and engagement with students. Collaboration with Colleges to embed career development learning into the curriculum. Completed deployment of the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) system InPlace to all Schools and Vietnam. Increased proactive engagement with employers and alumni resulting in significantly more employment opportunities for students. Restructure and realignment of the Vietnam careers service to further support the creation of WIL and employment opportunities. Opened the JobShop drop-in centre for students in Melbourne. Over 648 positions at RMIT filled by students through the Jobs on Campus program. Active engagement in national and international WIL and employability projects, strategies and forums. Create Your Future Career Implemented from 2014, the Create Your Future Career campaign raises students awareness from day-1 and guides them on the career-related actions they need to take at each stage of their studies to enhance their employability. Explore First year is the best time for students to explore their career direction. Students are encouraged to explore career options that their program can lead to. They are directed to the Careers Toolkit, the Job Shop, encouraged to attend events and workshops, and join clubs and societies. Future priority areas Development and implementation of strategies aligned with the Ready for Life and Work Strategic Plan to Further enhance collaboration with Colleges and Centres to jointly deliver impactful careers services and embed career development learning in the curriculum. Implement strategies to build student career awareness and employability from day-1. Provide inclusive services to prepare students for life and work. Further expand the co-curricular Future Edge and Personal Edge programs. Enhance data analysis capabilities to enable targeted strategies to improve graduate outcomes. Maintain a proactive, sustainable approach for targeted employer, community and alumni engagement to maximise WIL and graduate employment opportunities. Provide systems, processes and resource support to WIL at RMIT and the expansion of WIL flagship programs in Vietnam. Implement enhanced service model. Experience Engage Mid-program is the best time for students to build their experience. Students are encouraged to consider Jobs on Campus, undertake vacation work, internships, work-integrated learning, volunteering and to join Future Edge. Final year is the best time for students to engage in career planning and create the future that they want. Students are encouraged to target preferred career possibilities, apply early for graduate recruitment programs, join industry mentoring, investigate enterprise formation/ self-employment options and develop selfmarketing and networking skills. 4

4 Strategic initiatives Careers and Employability. Annual Report In 2015, Careers & Employability (C&E) undertook the following key strategic initiatives to enhance student employability. A number of these initiatives were developed and implemented through the Student Services and Amenities Fees to meet student demand. Other projects were implemented through strategic initiatives or the Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Programme (HEPPP) funding. College engagement and in-curricular strategic initiatives C&E college liaison teams collaborated closely with Schools and Colleges to deliver a range of careers services aligned to each College s strategic plan to enhance student employability. In-program workshops Upon request, more than 120 specifically tailored workshops were delivered into programs, with over 3000 attendees. Career development learning in the curriculum The career development learning in the curriculum team worked with the Office of Dean Learning & Teaching and College Academic Development Groups to support the embedding of career development learning into 15 Science, Engineering and Health programs. 32 in-program workshops for over 790 attendees 48 in-program workshops for over 1230 attendees SEH BUS DSC In-program workshop attendees 43 in-program workshops for over 1140 attendees WIL system, processes and resources The University-wide InPlace WIL system and processes were deployed to all Schools and Vietnam to: Support the coordination of WIL in Schools and Centres Increase the satisfaction of students and industry partners Enhance strategic reporting capabilities The WIL Champions Network, Community of Practice and WIL Skills G+ community are now well established to support WIL at RMIT. Industry, student and staff WIL resources have been developed to support Colleges and Schools managing WIL activities. RMIT-wide co-curricular strategic initiatives Global engagment of alumni In 2015, industry professionals mentored 707 students from Melbourne, Vietnam and Singapore. The mentoring programs are managed in collaboration with Advancement to enhance student employability and to increase strategic alumni engagement in careers and employment activities. A web-based mentoring system was implemented to provide global scalability for RMIT s mentoring programs. Future Edge and Personal Edge Future Edge (Melbourne) and Personal Edge (Vietnam) are University-wide co-curricular programs for students to develop, enhance and reflect on key employability skills sought by employers, and have their co-curricular experiences recognised in one place. The programs assist students to articulate their skills during job applications for successful transition into graduate employment. 493 students enrolled in Future Edge in Melbourne from semester 2, students enrolled in Personal Edge in Vietnam in Job Shop The Job Shop is a highly visible drop-in careers centre to provide students with careers assistance and advice. The centre is staffed with trained student Peer Career Assistants who deliver relatable advice and triage more complex queries to expert careers consultants. There were more than 2220 student drop-in careers enquiries to the Job Shop in % Employment, internship or volunteer experience 38% Professional networking opportunities Additional opportunities from mentoring 20% Job shadowing/ workplace visits Over 7,000 industry partners in InPlace 2,299 students enrolled in Personal Edge and Future Edge 88% increase in mentoring partnerships 2,220 Job Shop drop-in enquiries

5 Global Locations of industry mentors Work integrated learning support Careers and Employability work closely with Schools and the Office of Dean Learning and Teaching in Melbourne and Vietnam to provide systems and processes to support WIL, develop university-wide resources, facilitate the sharing of best practice and broker WIL opportunities into the University from employers and community partners. InPlace WIL system, processes and resources The InPlace WIL system support team was set up to provide InPlace training, support and reporting for Colleges and Schools, including dashboard reporting for the Industry Business Development unit. The university-wide WIL business processes have been streamlined in consultation with key stakeholders in Melbourne and Vietnam and a number of university-wide WIL resources were developed for schools including customisable communication collateral and videos. National and international initiatives C&E was active in national and international WIL and employability projects, strategies and forums including: National WIL Strategy Group (Partner) Office of Learning and Teaching project on industry engagement in WIL (Team member) WACE: World Association of Cooperative Education (Board member) Australian Collaborative Education Network (President) Advisory groups on WIL for Office of the Chief Scientist, ATN and national and international WIL projects WIL activities in InPlace ,400 8,360 WIL Community of Practice, Champions Network and WIL and Employability Newsletter The WIL Community of Practice was run in collaboration with the Office of Dean Learning and Teaching and met regularly to share best practice, collaborate and resolve common issues. Topics included support for WIL practitioners, technology enabled WIL, designing WIL curricular and managing WIL activities. 4, The WIL Skills Google+ community, WIL Champions network and WIL and Employability Newsletter provided further channels to share best practice across RMIT globally and facilitate rapid responses to industry WIL enquiries. Placements Projects Simulated WIL mentoring in 29 Partnerships countries 740 WIL activities outside Australia 21,700 WIL activities in 2015

6 215,000 website visits in Digital engagement Online resources provide scalable and globally accessible careers support for our student and graduates. Careers toolkit and website The Careers Toolkit provides a comprehensive suite of online careers resources including career planning tools, resume builders, interview simulators, e-learning resources and global labour market information. Content is developed in collaboration with RMIT Vietnam and deployed for all RMIT campuses and recent alumni. The toolkit received 29,000 unique visits across The most popular content included: CareerHub CareerHub is an online jobs and careers event board for RMIT students and recent graduates to search and apply for jobs, register for events and activities, and book careers appointments. In May 2015, CareerHub was integrated with the RMIT Student Administration System so students can automatically sign-in thereby streamlining access to employment opportunities and increasing utilisation. Across 2015, more than 25,000 students: logged into CareerHub 232,000 times viewed job ads 497,728 times. 25,000 students accessed CareerHub 14,600 Facebook likes in Melbourne and Vietnam sourcing part-time work, internships and graduate roles writing resumes and preparing for interviews career planning. Pages on the RMIT Melbourne careers website received more than 215,000 visits for the year. In 2015, the toolkit was reviewed and redeveloped for re-launch in semester 1, Enhancements to improve the user experience and drive utilisation include updated resources, a simplified architecture and a more responsive design. Career development learning and WIL website In collaboration with the Office of Dean Learning & Teaching, a website and resources were developed to support programs to embed career development learning into the curriculum. The website is to be launched in Semester 1, 2016 and includes a career development learning framework, a step-by-step model and processes with supporting case studies and digital resources and templates. Social media The C&E Facebook pages have more than 6,900 likes in Australia and 7,700 likes in Vietnam. Vietnam s Facebook page is a particularly effective communication channel with an above industry standard level of engagement. 7 Programs and workshops 12 Careers programs and workshops help students clarify their career goals, develop job-search strategies, gain experience and make successful career transitions into graduate employment. Career Health Check To aid in the transition to employment or enterprise formation, 868 final semester or recently graduated students received personalised job search, resume review, interview preparation and careers advice through the Career Health Check program - a 38 per cent increase in participation from Resume reviews were highly valued with over 94 per cent of students feeling prepared or very prepared after their appointment. Jobs on Campus In 2015, the Jobs on Campus program placed students into 648 part-time roles at RMIT providing them with an opportunity to gain experience, build employability and contribute a student perspective to RMIT s workforce. More than 3,285 students participated in the Jobs on Campus training programs, and 84 per cent of staff were extremely satisfied with the program s recruitment, selection and induction services. Indigenous Students Higher Education Pathways Project In collaboration with the Ngarara Willim Centre, an informed and culturally appropriate service was provided to assist Indigenous students to make higher education study decisions and to build their employability. Services included tailored workshops, collaboration with Victoria s Department of Human Services and Ngarara Willim Centre for the facilitation of traineeship opportunities, LEAD accreditation for the Gama-dji student orientation program and increased student engagement in C&E programs such as Student Ambassadors and Peer Career Assistants. RMIT LEAD Volunteering develops personal, leadership and employability skills. RMIT LEAD provides recognition of students volunteer and leadership activities on their academic transcripts and through a LEAD certificate signed by the Vice-Chancellor. A total of 1134 students from 43 volunteer programs received LEAD recognition in 2015, a 43 per cent increase from Career Passport In Vietnam, 1114 students enrolled in the workplace preparation program to prepare for their WIL placements, and 482 students were placed in internships with 280 companies by the CD&E Internships team in conjunction with the Academic Centres. Careers and employment workshops and events In Melbourne, there were over 14,000 student attendances at C&E workshops and events, including the 123 specifically tailored workshops delivered into programs upon request. In Vietnam, over 1,090 students, parents and prospective students participated in careers workshops. More than 92 staff and 260 local head teachers and education leaders at provincial and national levels participated in career guidance education professional development workshops. Careers counselling In Melbourne, 1,760 careers counselling appointments were provided for students with complex careers issues, a decrease of 21 per cent from 2014 as students were able to receive career support through the Job Shop, workshops, co-curricular programs and online resources. Common presenting issues were: career planning program change further study. A total of 967 careers counselling appointments were provided in Vietnam including appointments for alumni and some prospective students. Common presenting issues were: program choice, career decision-making and family involvement internship enquiries job search. 8 Employer engagement 14 Our engagement with local and global employers is strategic and innovative and focused on developing relationships to maximise WIL and employment opportunities. Working closely with a range of key stakeholders, we develop and deliver global employment activities and events that help students clarify and achieve their career goals and assist organisations to employ our students and graduates, host a WIL project or placement, and become mentors. Internship and Volunteering Fair More than 1,290 students and 49 exhibitors participated in the Internship and Volunteering Fair at Storey Hall. After attending, 76 per cent of students said they would apply for internships or volunteer positions, update their resume or do further research on employers. The event was run in conjunction with the RMIT Business Students Association. Jobs advertised to RMIT students and graduates Employers lodged 6,403 job advertisements for students and recent graduates on RMIT s CareerHub, a 65 per cent increase on 2014 attributed to proactive follow up of warm job leads by employer liaison officers. The job advertisements received more than 490,000 views. 65% Increase 6403 Jobs Employer presentations and industry insights Employer presentations and industry insights are a series of events that focus on WIL opportunities and graduate employment programs, employer expectations, application processes and enterprise creation. In 2015, there were 116 employer presentations and industry insights either held on campus or promoted to students. Careers Month Careers Month combined a total of 24 employability workshops, 7 industry insights evenings, 23 tailored careers sessions and 6 sessions specifically for international students. RMIT partnered with the Australian Association of Graduate Employers to deliver our graduate careers fair off-campus through the Big Meet Careers Fair in Melbourne. More than 720 RMIT students and 90 graduate employers, agencies and career providers participated in the event. Careers fairs and networking events in Vietnam In total 997 students and 73 industry partners attended the career fairs held in Saigon South and Hanoi and more than 430 students, 59 alumni and 294 industry partners participated in networking events for students seeking internships or graduate positions. Global Careers week Global Careers week events showcased the many different global careers available both in Australia and abroad through a series of workshops and industry events including the Melbourne Global Careers Virtual Fair. Entrepreneurship week Entrepreneurship week connected students who are looking to start their own small business or enterprise with a range of entrepreneurs from diverse industries. Mentoring programs with employers C&E s Industry Mentoring programs align directly with many employers diversity and inclusion strategies.
