3 indoors for the Vols. He has a high jump season- and indoor career-best of /4. ARESON BACK FOR INDOORS ONLY: Lady Vol Jackie Areson has only indoor eligibility remaining this season. The two-time All-American swept the SEC Indoor and Outdoor 5000m run crowns in 2010 and anchored UT s DMR to an SEC meet record. She also notched finishes of third (5000m) and fourth () at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships. Thus far in 2011, Areson ranks No. 1 nationally in the (9:14.61) and fourth in the mile (4:44.33). COSTELLO A GOOD GET: Liz Costello graduated from Princeton and had a season of eligibility remaining. To pursue the graduate degree of her choice, she chose Tennessee, where she will compete in her final collegiate season. She s off to a good start, clocking a 9:16.91 effort at the Kentucky Invitational that ranks her No. 2 nationally and No. 5 on UT s all-time indoor performers list in that event. LOCKE ANOTHER KEY TO UT SUCCESS: Freshman sprinter Dentarius Locke, who redshirted last season after a sensational prep career in which he ranked as the top sprinter in 2009, looks to be on track to a fine first year of competition. He won the 60m and at the season-opening Kentucky Invitational and set a UT freshman record in the 300m at the Hokie Invitational in week two. HOKIE INVITATIONAL RECAP: The Vols and Lady Vols combined for four victories, 17 other top-five finishes and 35 personal records at the Hokie Invitational on Jan The winners were Jackie Areson (mile) and Chanelle Price () on the women s side and Joe Franklin (1000m) and Peter Sigilai () for the UT men. Dentarius Locke took fourth in the 300 meters, but he set a UT freshman record with his effort. KENTUCKY INVITATIONAL RECAP: Tennessee got the 2011 campaign off to a nice start on Jan at the Kentucky Invitational, winning five events and carding an NCAA qualifier. True freshman Vol Justin Hunter won the long jump with an NCAA auto mark of 26-1, redshirt freshman Dentarius Locke swept titles in the men s 60m (6.75) and (21.15), senior Jackie Areson snared a victory in the women s (9:14.61) and true freshman Kianna Ruff took first in the women s (2:10.88). SEC MALE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: For his victorious and NCAA-qualifying effort in the long jump at the Kentucky Invitational, Justin Hunter was named the SEC Indoor Track & Field Male Freshman of the Week on Jan. 18. RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS FOR UT: Tennessee returns seven women s All-Americans, including Annie Alexander (in/out shot), Jackie Areson (in /5000m), Ashley Harris (4x100mR), Brittany Jones (DMR x 2, in 4xR), Chanelle Price (DMR x 2, in/out ), Brittany Sheffey (DMR x 2) and Ellen Wortham (DMR, 4x100mR). OTHER LADY VOL VETERANS TO WATCH: Besides the All-Americans listed above, also back are SEC Indoor scorers in sophomores Jessie Harrison (6th, weight throw) and Kia Jackson (5th, long jump). Sheffey, mentioned previously with the DMR, was the SEC Indoor runner-up in both the mile and, while Wortham was fourth in the pentathlon. TOP RETURNING VOLS: The Vols return no All-Americans from last season, but they do welcome back five who scored individually at the SEC level in Returnees include junior Joe Franklin (6th, ), juniors Robert Rasnick (6th, pole vault) and Joe Berry (t8th, pole vault), and sophomores Ben Bartholomew (7th, shot put) and Desmond Brown (7th, long jump). Berry has three SEC vault titles to his credit. KEY NEWCOMERS: As week one s results confirmed, the Vols top newcomers were expected to be redshirt freshman sprinter Dentarius Locke (No. 1 sprinter in class of 2009) and Justin Hunter (No. 1 long jumper, No. 5 high jumper and No. 6 triple jumper in 2010), who had a fantastic season for the football team. The Lady Vols signed several potential impact freshmen, but transfers Liz Costello (Princeton) and Nijgia Snapp (Seton Hall) appeared to be the most ready to hit the ground running. TWO-TIME NCAA CHAMPION SKIPPER: J.J. Clark is in his ninth season at Tennessee and in his second year as the Director of Track & Field over both the UT men s and women s teams. He has led UT to NCAA Indoor women s national titles in 2005 and 2009 and SEC Indoor women s crowns in 2005, 2007 and All told, his teams have posted six top-five national finishes, and he has earned coach of the year distinction on 21 occasions. STAFF CHANGES: J.J. Clark s staff had a small amount of turnover in the offseason. The only full-time coaching change was in the women s sprints/hurdles area, where Heather Van Norman departed, and former North Carolina and USA Track & Field standout Sharon (Couch) Seagraves was hired to fill that void. Former LSU and USA Track & Field sprint standout Rohsaan Griffin also joined the program as a volunteer coach and will aid the sprint group. NEXT WEEK: The Vols and Lady Vols will travel to New York City next weekend to take part on Feb. 4-5 in the highprofile New Balance Collegiate Invitational at The Armory.
