2 From the Director Dear Friends, Assisting patrons is the most essential service the library provides. In FY , the Library welcomed nearly 60,000 visitors and issued 1,400 new library cards. Library staff assisted patrons in person, by telephone, through and by text message an average of 45,000 times throughout the year. The Library circulated approximately 60,000 items in FY , e-books accounting for about 10% of that total. Library staff provided over 200 programs for adults, teens and youth with nearly 3,600 attending, an increase of 18% over last fiscal year. Wi-Fi usage, items shared through interlibrary loan, meeting room usage and visitors to the library website all increased substantially in FY In FY , work has begun to create a Three-Year Strategic Plan. With the help of residents from both Romulus and Huron Township, the Library Board and staff will be looking to the future to determine how the we can best meet the needs of the community. A Strategic Planning Committee, made up of library stakeholders from both communities, has been formed and has already started work on the process. Community forums will be held this spring and a survey will be conducted to gain valuable insight that will help the committee identify community needs and move the community forward with regard to library services. 3 About the Library The Romulus Public Library serves a population of 39,868 including over 23,000 Romulus residents and about 16,000 residents of Huron Township. The staff consists of two full-time and eight part-time employees for a total of 6.8 full-time equivalents (FTEs). The Library s total operating budget is approximately $570,000 and as of June 30, 2017, there were nearly 14,000 library cardholders (35% of the community population). The library is governed by a five-member Library Board whose members are appointed by the mayor. One member is appointed to serve as Romulus city council representative and one is appointed to represent Huron Township. Members serve either a one-year, two-year, three-year or four-year term. The city council representative serves a four-year term that corresponds with their term in office. The Library Board advocates for the Library, provides general oversight of the business and affairs of the Library and is responsible for approving policies, long-range planning and the budget. The Library is supported by many volunteers who help the staff and board reached their goals. The Friends of the Romulus Public Library is one such group of volunteers. The Friends hold book sales and other fundraising activities that support the library s mission and serve as community advocates for the Library. The Library is certified by the State of Michigan, having received the Quality Services Audit Checklist (QSAC) Certification at the Essential Level. MISSION STATEMENT The Romulus Public Library provides resources and services to inform, educate, enlighten and entertain the members of its community and serves as a place for all to discover the joy of reading. CORE VALUES Lifelong Discovery We provide programs and services that facilitate the exploration of personal interests and encourage lifelong discovery for people of all ages. Access We provide free and open access to library resources, programs and services which interest, inform and enlighten. Community Engagement We serve the community as a resource for information and a place to gather. Our involvement and leadership in the community are extended through partnerships with city departments, businesses, institutions and local organizations. Teamwork We value our staff and work together as a team, treating each other with respect, integrity and fairness. 4 Highlights of the Year Upgraded public computer cabling for improved connectivity and speed. Hosted DIA Away mobile hands-on art museum in municipal complex parking lot. Acquired used shelving unit saving the library approximately $2,000. Completed DVD shelving project. Over 2,000 DVDs placed in security cases and moved to new location, providing better access to patrons and space for collection growth. Completed Library Safety Plan and received approval from the Fire Chief. Director served as Chair of The Library Network Steering Committee and Membership Committee. Created new computer tutoring brochures for patrons. Completed several major collection weeding/updating projects. Began offering incoming fax service to the community. Provided full-text, searchable access to digitized historical newspapers on website. Began providing over-the-counter credit card payment option for patrons. Held annual Bowling Fundraiser in partnership with Romulus Chamber of Commerce. Created new grant-funded STEAM Kit Collection. Created new Library Board Orientation Manuals. Updated and improved library website with new theme and faster speed. Held 2017 Food for Fines campaign in partnership with Gleaners Food Bank with all proceeds supporting Helping Hands Food Bank in Romulus. Reached out to residents at Whispering Willows Apartments about library services and programs. Staff participated in vendor demonstrations for new integrated library system. Created and presented new library logo/branding. Acquired new high-speed fax machine to provide faster, more efficient service. Provided option for card holders to present digital version of their library card barcode on a mobile device using an app. Began promoting the library using Facebook Live and Instagram. Introduced new community jigsaw puzzle in adult area for patrons. Replaced library roof. Designated bulletin board in lobby to support local businesses. Library Director elected to serve as President, Greater Romulus Chamber of Commerce. Installed emergency exit signage on back exit door in staff area and east exit doors. STEAM Kit
