6 GENERAL INFORMATION 125 POUNDS Sophomore Brandon Tucker (Broken Arrow, Okla.) returns in for his second season as the starting 125-pounder in the Boilermaker lineup. In his first season, he compiled a record. The four-time Oklahoma state champion came into his own late in the season, posting wins over 2005 national champion Joe Dubuque (Indiana) and two-time All-American Bobbe Lowe (Minnesota). Depth is provided by redshirt freshman Jeff Price (Xenia, Ohio). 133 POUNDS The starter at 133 pounds won t be solidified until mid-season, awaiting the NCAA ruling on a sixth season for Chris Fleeger (Trout Run, Pa.). Fleeger, a two-time All-American and the 2003 Big Ten champion at 125, will be the top guy if the NCAA grants him the extra year, making up for the season that he used training for the Olympic trials. Junior Sean Schmaltz (Franklin, Ind.) will likely be the guy for the Boilermakers if Fleeger is unable to wrestle. Schmaltz was the starter at 133 for Purdue last season, posting a 5-22 record. Cameron Doggett (New Carlisle, Ohio) is in his first season at Purdue, coming away from a prep career that featured three state titles and a career record. Further future depth will be provided by freshman Ryan Naczi (Succasunna, N.J.). 141 POUNDS The lone weight to graduate wrestlers in 2005, the starting role at 141 is up for grabs between junior Jason Cook (Valparaiso, Ind.) and redshirt freshman Jake Patacsil (Sunrise, Fla.). Cook is the favorite to grab the position, coming into the season with a career record at Purdue, with 10 wins coming by fall. Patacsil was a state champion and during his senior year in high school. Brandon Tucker BOILERMAKERS John DeCeault The newcomer to the weight class is freshman Nick Bertucci (Berwyn, Ill.) Bertucci will likely redshirt this season after winning a state title in Illinois one year ago. 149 POUNDS Senior Doug Withstandley (Jackson, N.J.) returns for his final season at Purdue after making the successful jump from 141 to 149 a year ago. A 2004 NCAA qualifier at 141, Withstandley was 7-1 in Big Ten duals at overall at 149 in 2005 en route to a berth in the 2005 NCAA Championships. Withstandley should be one of the top wrestlers at the weight in the Big Ten this season. Redshirt freshman Mark Powell (Washington, Pa.) provides the depth at the weight class, while two freshmen enter the mix for the Boilermakers: Sam Patacsil (Logansport, Ind.) and Matt Redmond (Wheaton, Ill.). 157 POUNDS The Boilermakers have an opening at 157 pounds, as the team will need to replace 2005 NCAA qualifier Colton Salazar (Midway, Utah), who is just a sophomore. Salazar posted a record of in his first collegiate season, but will spend the next two seasons on religious mission. Filling the spot in the lineup will likely be redshirt freshman Jake Murphy (Chicago Heights, Ill.), an Illinois state champion as a senior in high school. Other returners and redshirts at the weight to push Murphy are sophomore Jarrin Franklin (Sharpsville, Ind.), sophomore Aaron Ruff (Whitefish Bay, Wis.), and redshirt freshman Nick Spohn (Cincinnati, Ohio). Freshman Jason Martin (Williamsburg, Ind.) makes this weight the deepest for the Boilermakers. 165 POUNDS An NCAA qualifier in 2005, junior John DeCeault (Tinley Park, Ill.) will return as the starter for his second year in the role. DeCeault posted a record of a year ago and looks to make a charge towards the top half of the Big Ten this season. Sophomore Dan Bedoy (Hammond, Ind.) was a parttime starter for the Boilermakers at 157 before jumping up to 174 during the 2005 campaign. Bedoy had a combined season record at the two weights of 5-17 and will provide depth at 165. Redshirt freshman Aaron Goebel (Springboro, Ohio) and true freshman Justin Fraga (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) give the Boilermakers depth for future seasons. 174 POUNDS Another weight with a wide open race for the starting position, 174 has a trio of Boilermakers listed on the roster. All have a shot at a starting spot.

7 Senior Barry Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind.) started part-time at the weight one year ago and posted a record of In years past, Jackson has wrestled at 184 and 197, but now finds himself in a race for the 174 starting nod. Sophomore Nick Skinner (Anderson, Ind.) comes off a redshirt season and will be amid the fight for the starting role. Skinner transferred from Kent State after a freshman season with the Zips. The newcomer to the race is freshman Nick Corpe (Granger, Ind.), who won the Indiana state title at 171 last year. Corpe, Skinner, and Jackson are reportedly even coming into the season. Jake O Brien 184 POUNDS The one weight class with no competition for the starting spot is 184, where three-time NCAA qualifier and 2005 All-American Ben Wissel (Richmond, Ind.) has a firm hold on the start. The only 184-pounder on the Purdue roster, the senior finished eighth at the NCAA Championships last season, finishing 5-3 at the national event. Wissel was as a junior, and is in his career, holding the most wins among active Boilermaker wrestlers. His 216 career takedowns rank among the top 20 all-time at Purdue. 197 POUNDS Junior Nathan Moore (Indianapolis, Ind.) returns for his third year as the Boilermaker starter at 197 pounds. Moore advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive time in 2005, and went on the mat for the season. His Big Ten dual record of 7-1 was tied for the best in the conference. Freshman Kameron Banes (Delphi, Ind.) provides the depth behind Moore and will likely be redshirted in his initial collegiate season. 285 POUNDS Sophomore Jake O Brien (Indianapolis, Ind.) returns for his second year as the Boilermaker heavyweight, but this time the Purdue big man will be pushed for his spot on the mat. O Brien posted a record of in 2005 and missed the NCAA Championships, snapping a string of nine consecutive trips to the national event for Boilermaker heavies. The last time a Purdue heavyweight failed to qualify for the NCAA Championships was 1995, and last year was just the second miss in 20 seasons. O Brien will be challenged for the starting spot by redshirt freshman Aaron Keough (Batavia, Ohio), who returns to Purdue after serving on a religious mission in Europe for the past two years. Depth at 285 will be provided by redshirt freshman Don Braatz (Wauwatosa, Wis.), while true freshman Chris Kasten (Winamac, Ind.), a two-time Indiana state champion, will redshirt this year. The Schedule Purdue suffered a tough 8-12 record in dual action one year ago, the first sub-.500 season for the Boilermakers since This year s grapplers will look to right the ship, but a tough schedule will present a significant challenge. The first challenge to the Boilermakers comes in the form of a competitive non-conference schedule, including their own Purdue Duals, another trip to Texas for the Lone Star Duals, and a journey west for three duals in California. The Boilermakers will open the dual season at home against four opponents at the Purdue Duals, squaring off against Bloomsburg, Eastern Michigan, William Penn and Indianapolis. The Lone Star Duals send the Boilermakers to the mat against Brown, Cal State- Fullerton, Navy and Northern Colorado. Out west, Boise State, Cal Poly and Cal State- Bakersfield will be waiting for the Purdue grapplers during a weekend venture in January. The second challenge of the season will be going up against the top wrestling conference in the NCAA - the Big Ten. Of the eight conference duals the Boilermakers have on their slate, seven come against teams ranked among the top 20 in pre-season rankings, and four are ranked in the top 10. The two Big Ten schools not on the Purdue schedule (Minnesota and Northwestern) are also ranked in the top 20, putting that much more of a challenge ahead of the Boilermakers at the Big Ten Championship. The conference post-season tournament will be held in Bloomington, Ind., on March 4-5, while the 2006 NCAA Championships will be in Oklahoma City on March Preseason Individual Rankings BRANDON TUCKER 125 POUNDS The Wrestling Mall 20 WrestlingReport.com 24 JASON COOK 141 POUNDS WrestlingReport.com 30 DOUG WITHSTANDLEY 149 POUNDS WrestlingReport.com 10 InterMat Wrestling 11 The Wrestling Mall 13 W.I.N.
