ABOUT UTAH STATE Aggie head coach Jeff Richards enters his fourth season leading the USU program and has eight letterwinners returning from last year s squad... The Aggies also have seven talented newcomers on the roster, who are expected to contribute NCAA REGIONAL PARTICIPANT RETURNERS Utah State sophomores Rachel Vaske and Paige Jones are the squad s two returning NCAA Regional participants... Vaske was 12th in the all-around while Jones was 39th on floor and 40th on vault... Vaske posted a in the all-around after scoring a on bars (T34th), a on both beam (31st) and floor (37th), and a on vault (42nd)... Jones logged a on vault (40th) and a on floor (39th). WAC-LESS IN SAN JOSE Utah State did not have an all-wac honoree for the first time in USU s six seasons in the league... It was also the first time since 1991 that the Aggies did not have an all-conference honoree. WINNER, WINNER CHICKEN DINNER Of Utah State s 17 event wins last season, sophomore Paige Jones is the Aggies only returning event winner, as departed gymnasts Nicole Simoneau (seven), Lyndsie Boone (three), Jackie Dillon (three) and Cammi Muhr (three) had the others... Jones earned her first collegiate event title by winning the vault at the Sacramento State dual with a career-best LOTS OF NUMBERS ON AGGIES SCHEDULE Utah State s 2012 schedule includes five teams in the preseason GymInfo/Troester Coaches Poll, including No. 5 Utah (Friday, Jan. 13), along with No. 4 Oklahoma (Jan. 21), No. 14 Boise State (March 2), No. 19 Arizona (March 16) and No. 20 Denver (WAC Championships March 24)... USU will also face four teams among others receiving votes, including Arizona State (Feb. 3), Southern Utah (Jan. 28 and March 9), BYU (Feb. 25 and March 5) and San Jose State (Feb. 10). {See pg 4 for complete poll} SUPER 16 The 16 gymnasts on USU s 2012 roster is the most on an Aggie roster since 2006, after having 15 on the 2011 roster, 13 on the 2010 ledger, 12 on the 2009 roster... USU had 14 gymnasts on each of the 2008 and 2007 rosters, while having 16 on the 2006 roster. EVENT BREAK DOWN: During the pre-season, the coaching staff has been trying to establish leaders and stand-outs on the team, and trying to decide who will compete in which events. For some, it s clear who will have the most success, while other events are yet to see a leader emerge. Vault: Betts and Landes, along with returning sophomore Paige Jones, are expected to lead the way on vault. Richards said senior Rebecca Holliday and junior Amelia Montoya are working to upgrade their individual vaults, bringing the team score up. Bars: Jones and Holliday are the stand-outs on the bars at this point. Joining them is junior Amanda Watamaniuk, who was out with injuries for the majority of the 2011 season. Beam: In the past, the beam has offered the most challenges for the Aggies, but Richards said the event is getting better. While a clear leader has not stepped up yet, Richards said he thinks the team will feed off each other in the next couple of weeks and grow from there. Floor: At this point, Landes and Jones are expected to shine on the floor. That is one of the team s weak areas, as those who have led the way in the past are the ones with injuries and unable to compete Utah State Gymnastics Notes #1 - at #5 Utah
