6 season preview Women s Basketball A New Era: First-year coach Devin Gotham hopes to improve the Golden Flyers fortunes graduate who coached men s basketball at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts for the past four seasons. We want to create a positive mindset. When Gotham looks at the schedule, he sees challenges at every turn. The Empire 8 Conference, he believes, will be strong and even more competitive with the recent addition of Stevens Institute of Technology. We have to force ourselves to not look too far down the road, he said. I truly believe that we can be competitive if we stay focused and become obsessed with attention to detail and doing the little things correctly. The Golden Flyers were 7-18 overall in , including a disappointing 3-11 showing in conference games. Add to that the fact that three of the team s top five scorers have departed and the challenges seem even more daunting. Among Gotham s immediate concerns is a return to form of senior Ali Sharpe, whose offensive contributions in were cut in half following reconstructive knee surgery. Her scoring average dropped from 14.6 to 7.2 points per game and her rebounding average dipped from 9 to 4. Sophomore Guard Kelly Dunne started regularly for the Golden Flyers in and averaged 9.1 points per game. Devin Gotham, Nazareth s first-year women s basketball coach, isn t concerned about the numbers just yet. He knows, though, that losses have exceeded wins in recent seasons and at the end of the day he wants to reverse that trend. First and foremost, Gotham wants to instill a new attitude. When that happens, he believes the wins and losses will take care of themselves. We just want to keep getting better and be hardworking and enthusiastic everyday, said Gotham, a 1998 Nazareth A 5-foot-10 forward, Sharpe appears poised to return to her pre-surgical level. The team s top returning scorer is sophomore Kelly Dunne, a 5-foot-5 guard, who contributed 9.1 points per game and led the team in assists (76), steals (53) and three-point baskets (41). Gotham believes that several others are ready to inherit additional leadership responsibilities, including senior guard Lexie Hilliard and juniors Lizzie Barlow and Sally Wilcox. Barlow, a 6-foot center, showed flashes of brilliance in a limited capacity in , while Wilcox, a 5-foot-4 guard, displayed solid fundamental skills as a ballhandler and outside shooting threat season preview

Malloy, a 5-foot-9 forward, started 19 of the team s 25 games last season and delivered 5.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. The Golden Flyers hope to find additional scoring punch from a solid first-year group that includes 5-foot-11 center Hillary Simon, whose athleticism enabled her to start every game as the goalie for the women s soccer team in the fall, and 5-foot-9 forward Mary Holland. The other first-year players are Alexis Hoffman, a 5-foot-8 forward; Catherine McCarthy, a 5-foot-8 forward; and Breanna Smith, a 5-foot-8 forward. I m excited and optimistic that we can be better, said Gotham, who will be assisted by his twin brother Kerry as well as Chuck Jefferson and Eva Lyons. We have a group that is committed to improve. senior Ali Sharpe, coming off knee surgery last season, averaged 7.2 points per game season preview 6

The department will operate under the NCAA Division III philosophy, through which academics are the student s first priority and sportsmanship, fair play, diversity and ethical conduct are constantly taught and promoted. Campus expansion 2004 marked the completion of Nazareth s largest capital campaign in history.
