One of the most intimate, beautiful and fan friendly arenas in all of NCAA Division I Basketball is Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum, home of East Carolina basketball. This cozy 8,000-seat facility gives the Pirates a distinct home court advantage unlike any other. After 27 years of basketball, Minges Coliseum underwent a facelift prior to the season. The anticipation was great and the much-awaited unveiling was everything it was supposed to be and more. The renovations, totaling almost $12 million, have made the arena one of the finest on-campus basketball facilities on the East Coast. Constructed at a cost of $2 million, Minges Coliseum was dedicated on Jan. 27, 1968, in the name of the Minges family of Greenville, N.C. As owners of Pepsi- Cola bottling operations in Greenville, Kinston and New Bern, the Minges family has provided leadership and support of East Carolina University Athletics over the years, going back to the days when the late Dr. Ray Minges served as President of the Century Club (forerunner of the Pirate Club), from The Pirates have won 66 percent of their games since the Coliseum opened in ECU has had only six losing records in Minges in its history. Since the building was renovated in 1994, the Pirates have won 70 percent of their home games and have recorded 10 or more victories five times. All the Minges Coliseum attendance records were shattered following renovation in 1995, including total season (71,761), average season (5,980 for 12 games) and for a single game (7,670 vs. UNC Wilmington, Feb. 25). The singlegame mark, in fact, was broken three times during the season Jan. 6 vs. East Tennessee State, Jan. 14 vs. James Madison and Feb. 25 vs. UNC Wilmington. Before , the largest crowd to witness a game in the Coliseum was on Dec. 10, 1969 when ECU hosted then-top-ranked South Carolina. An estimated crowd of 7,500 jammed the 6,500-seat facility. Those figures stood until the season in which a single game record crowd of 8,081 watched the Pirates defeat ninthranked Marquette on Dec. 30. Two weeks later, over 8,000 fans passed through the turnstiles at the coliseum for just the second time as ECU battled Louisville. A new season record total of 81,538 came out to see the Pirates during the year. Williams Arena is named in honor and recognition of Walter and Marie Williams for their support of East Carolina Athletics over the years. As alumni of East Carolina College, Walter and Marie have endowed two Men s Basketball Position scholarships, the Spirit of the East Post-Eligibility Scholarship, and an unrestricted student-athlete scholarship on behalf of the University s athletics program. Further, through Trade Oil Company, the Williams family gave the first $1 million gift ever given to the Educational Foundation in support of ECU Athletics, through the Shared Visions Campaign. In addition to his financial support, Walter Williams has given his time unselfishly in support of the Pirate Club. During , Walter served as Executive President of the Educational Foundation. In addition to showcasing East Carolina Pirate basketball and volleyball teams, Williams Arena is also an outstanding venue for the University and local high school graduation ceremonies, concerts and other entertainment events throughout the year. The arena seves as the site for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Eastern Regional Boy s Basketball championships each year. The National Basketball Association and World Wrestling Entertainment have also visited Minges Coliseum East Carolina Basketball

The East Carolina coaching staff has nearly 75 years of combined coaching experience at the collegiate level. Head coach Ricky Stokes and assistant coach Chris Ferguson have been involved with NCAA Division I coaching since the mid-80s, while associate head coach Mack McCarthy has been coaching for three decades. Assistant coach Larry Dixon begins his fourth season coaching collegiately after earning his stripes at the high school level. Collectively, members of the ECU coaching staff have coached in more than 20 NCAA Tournaments. Stokes, McCarthy and Ferguson have all coached teams that reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAAs. Stokes played in the Final Four in 1981 and ECU Coaches Have: Coached in 23 NCAA Tournaments Made four appearances in the Sweet 16 as coaches Won two NIT Championships Captured eight conference championships East Carolina Basketball

Coach Stokes and his staff are committed to developing the complete student-athlete, both on the court and in the classroom. East Carolina takes advantage every opportunity allowed by the NCAA during the preseason and off-season to prepare for the upcoming year. Members of the Pirate coaching staff have helped mentor some of the greatest players in NBA history. Stokes recruited and helped coached two-time NBA MVP and 1997 College Player-of-the-Year Tim Duncan to Wake Forest, while McCarthy recruited and tutored 2006 Naismith Hall of Fame inductee Charles Barkley at Auburn. Other NBA players tutored by the Pirate coaches include Randolph Childress, Chris Morris, Chuck Person, and Rodney Rogers. Personal development continues throughout the season as the Pirates always stress the fundamentals of: shooting passing dribbling rebounding defense East Carolina Basketball 19

Bagwell Field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Dr. Leo Jenkins announced the original plan for ECU s current football facility on Oct. 7, Within a year, $283,387 had been raised. With the funds in hand, Ficklen Stadium was built. The James Skinner Ficklen Memorial Stadium was dedicated on Sept. 21, 1963, as East Carolina defeated Wake Forest, The original stadium consisted of the permanent stands on the south side, a small press box, and the old lighting system, which was removed after the 1974 season. Total cost was $300,000. Since graduating in the early 1970s, Al and Debby Bagwell have been gracious friends of the university with Al serving on the Pirate Club s Executive Committee in and being appointed to the University s Board of Visitors in The couple from Lake Gaston, Va., was honored in 1997 for their gift to the Pirate Club s Shared Visions Campaign. For their contributions, the Bagwell's had their name become a permanent mark on the ECU landscape as the field is now and forever will be recognized as Bagwell Field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium The newest gem on the ECU campus is Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium, which arguably rates as one of the top collegiate baseball facilities in the nation. Construction began in May of 2004 and was completed in March of The design plan for the new facility, which was built on the old site of Harrington Field, increased its permanent seating capacity to 3,000 seats. With an estimated price tag of $11 million, Clark-LeClair Stadium nearly doubles Harrington Field s capacity of approximately 1,750 (excluding outfield areas). Among the features are an indoor batting tunnel, a VIP booth, picnic areas, coaches offices and a new scoreboard (which was installed in February 2004). Player amenities include a spacious clubhouse and video system. To accommodate the writers and broadcasters covering the Pirates, a state-of-the-art press box features a main level, a TV booth, two radio booths, a Pirate Club deck and wireless internet connections. Bradford Creek Country Club ECU calls the 7,151-yard, par-72 Bradford Creek Golf and Country Club home. ECU hosts at least one large tournament there every year and is allotted practice time on the course throughout the year. In May of 2005, construction concluded on a new golf practice facility which includes a laser leveled 60 ft. x 130 ft. practice tee, an 8,000 square-foot USGA spec bent grass putting green with a large pitching area (40-60 yard shots), several chipping areas and two bunkers. One bunker is for short greenside bunker shots and the other will serve the dual purpose of greenside and fairway bunker shots. The practice facility houses its own separate irrigation system and has been in use by student-athletes since Aug. 1, East Carolina Basketball

Lake Kristi Lake Kristi, East Carolina s premiere home cross-country course, has been the site of the North Carolina Collegiate Championships, Colonial Athletic Association Championships, Conference USA Championships, and the 2002, 2004 and 2005 NCAA Regional Cross Country Championships. Ward Sports Medicine Building Ward Sports Medicine Building houses all athletic administrative offices and the Human Performance Laboratory as well as football, and men s and women s basketball offices. The sports medicine center, football locker room, ECU Athletics Hall of Fame and student development center are also located inside the three-story, 82,095- square foot structure. Minges Aquatic Center Once host to several Olympic-style meets, Minges Natatorium still packs in several hundred fans for each Pirate home swim meet. With a diving well, electronic timing system, and adjacent locker rooms, Minges Aquatic Center is one of the finest in the East. Bunting Field The Pirates saw the completion of a new $30,000 track prior to the 2000 outdoor season, which led to ECU holding the Pirates first home track meet in more than 25 years. Bunting Field is also the home of the ECU women s soccer program East Carolina Basketball 21

Murphy Center The impressive, eye-catching Murphy Center is located between Dowdy- Ficklen Stadium and Minges Coliseum. It is considered among one of the largest and best strength and conditioning centers in the country East Carolina Basketball 22

The Murphy Center is one of the athletic department s newest facilities located between Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium and Minges Coliseum. It s one of the largest and bestequipped strength and conditioning centers in the country. ECU s Board of Trustees approved the project in the spring 1997, thus putting it into the athletics department staff s hands to make this 52,475-square-foot, twostory strength and conditioning/pirate Club multipurpose center a reality. ECU s strength and conditioning programs for its student-athletes are based out of the 22,000-square-foot first floor of the $13 million facility. This new weight room has revolutionized the Pirates strength and conditioning efforts. The center opened for workouts in June 2002 and was dedicated at ECU s home football game on September 14, This is one of the top weight rooms in the country, says Director of Strength and Conditioning Mike Golden. It just shows the commitment that East Carolina has for its student-athletes. No expense was spared in the development of this facility. It consists of top of the line strength and speed equipment, a 50 meter four lane indoor track, a turf area for agilities, and another turf section for plyometric training. It has everything. The second floor of the building features a private dining area for recruits as well as a 9,000-squarefoot banquet hall and a large terrace with a view of the football stadium for Pirate Club functions. Scattered throughout the facility is a stunning array of photomurals, sports memorabilia and trophies. Because of its location behind the Bagwell Field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium end zone and its connection to Minges Coliseum, the Murphy Center is an ideal place for Pirate Club members to socialize at both football and basketball games. ECU STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING East Carolina University s student-athletes train for competition under the direct supervision of Director of Strength & Conditioning Mike Golden. The strength staff consists of assistants Danny Wheel, Michelle Boswell and Nate Barnes. Golden and his staff conduct workouts in the 22,000-square-foot weight room of the new Murphy Center. The center, which opened in spring 2002, more than tripled the size of the Pirates previous workout area. The objectives of the ECU Strength & Conditioning Program are to help in the development of speed, power, and strength. The weight room also plays a key role in injury prevention and rehabilitation, working hand in hand with the school s athletic training staff. The staff feels that a stronger, faster, and more powerful athlete will be better equipped to compete at the highest levels of NCAA competition East Carolina Basketball 23

The student-athlete at East Carolina University has the luxury of having one of the most dedicated health care teams in the Southeast. 17 At East Carolina University, athletic and academic excellence are inseparable goals for student-athletes. The University is committed to the academic success and graduation of students participating in its athletic programs. The Department of Athletics supports this commitment with extensive academic support services in order to maximize the success of every student-athlete. Under the direction of the ECU Student Development Staff, Pirate student-athletes have reached new heights in academic achievement during the past few years, including having eight student-athletes named to Verizon CoSIDA Academic All-America teams. The ECU Athletics Department is committed to its Student Development Program and the understanding that student-athletes become well rounded in all aspects of life. The primary goals for the Student Development Program are: To support in the efforts of every student-athlete who attends ECU to earn a degree. To provide assistance for the studentathlete in the development of values, emphasizing the qualities of leadership. To enhance the interpersonal relationships and communication skills of the student-athlete. To facilitate the fulfillment of career and life goals of each student-athlete. To safeguard the academic integrity of the University by insuring compliance with all rules of the University and the NCAA. The NCAA and the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association have developed a life skills program for student-athletes to help them bridge the gap between college and the years after graduation. The mission of the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) program is to provide a personal development program designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs. The focus of the program is on the studentathlete, as a whole person academically, athletically and emotionally and on their changing needs and skills during college and in the years after graduation. Ultimately, the CHAMPS program is designed to help student-athletes realize higher academic achievement, a higher level of maturity, self-responsibility and greater overall success. As a participant in this program, ECU is dedicated to carrying out all the program's goals and commitments. Among the Academic Development Services available for student-athletes are tutorial programs, study halls, academic skills development, and orientation. Additional programs such as leadership development seminars, a speaker's bureau and community service programs are an important part of the student development program. The athletics department has set up several prestigious awards for ECU student-athletes. For the past eight years, PCS Phosphate has sponsored the ECU Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is presented annually to a male and female athlete who best exemplifies both academic and athletic success. PCS Phosphate also recognizes an All-Academic team selected from the highest cumulative GPAs of each team. Student-athletes also serve on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, which is an advisory organization for the Office of Student Development and the Department of Athletics East Carolina Basketball 25

Why Pirates? The Pirate, a symbol and namesake for East Carolina University's athletic teams, was adopted from the legend and lore of coastal North Carolina and was a natural choice for a nickname when intercollegiate athletics began at the school in the 1930s. Pirates, fierce and colorful were prominent in the early 18th century. The state's Outer Banks which jut far out into the Atlantic were ideal hideouts for these legendary gangsters of the high seas. Many had homes and families in the small villages along the coast. Edward Teach, best known as "Blackbeard" was an infamous resident of eastern North Carolina. He had a house at Ocracoke and an inland home at Bath near the Pamlico Sound. East Carolina University's interest in pirates and sea lore begin in That year, the Tecoan, the yearbook for what was then East Carolina Teachers College, carried pirates as its theme. The pages were filled with paintings and sketches of patched eye buccaneers, tall ships and buried treasure. The book referred to the tales of "Teachy the Pirate" often told by natives in the historic town of Bath. The men's varsity team, at the time, was known as "The Teachers," a lackluster band of athletes who had won only two football games in three seasons of existence. The students' interest in pirates grew quickly and resulted in changing the name of the team to capture the romantic appeal of the early sea ALMA MATER & FIGHT SONG Alma Mater by Harold A. McDougle, 44 Praise to your name so fair, Dear Old East Carolina. Your joys we ll all share And your friends we ll ever be. We pledge our loyalty And our heart s devotion. To Thee, our Alma Mater Love and Praise Fight Song Cheer for East Car lina, Cheer for Old E.C., We know we re the finest, Onward to victory! GO PIRATES!! Cheer for East Car lina, Cheer for Old E.C., Loyal and Bold, We re the Purple and Gold, WE ARE THE PIRATES OF E-C-U!!! adventures. The change brought so much enthusiasm that in the following year, 1935, the Pirate football team performed much better, winning three of its six games. Prior to the introduction of intercollegiate football in 1932, the ECTC Athletic Association fielding teams in basketball, tennis, baseball and archery, was content with the more classical nicknames. A Handbook for ECTC listed the two teams that made up the Athletic Association as the Olympians and the Athenians. Their colors were purple and gold (the same as today's colors) and the mascot was a wildcat. Other uses of the pirate theme began in the 1940s with a literary magazine named "Pieces of Eight." The name, however, was later changed to "Rebel." ECU's faculty and staff newsletter uses the name "Pieces of Eight" today. The college yearbook became the "Buccaneer" in the 1950s and the pirate symbol, the face of a bearded, patchedeye character with a crossed bone emblem on his hat, was added to the official school seal in the mid 1960s. The Mascot The athletic mascot continues to evolve. The bigger-than-life pirate cartoon figure enjoyed by ECU fans today is a 1983 creation. At first this swaggering, tough-guy creation was called "Pee Dee," named after a river that extends through parts of North and South Carolina. Today, the mascot responds to several names - Mr. Pirate, Pee Dee, Pete as long as the name is spoken with respect. Be careful! He carries a cutlass. Pete, by the way, is another story. Pete was an unofficial dog mascot, but only for a few years in the mid-1970s. Pete resembled the dog in the "Little Rascals" movies and carried the reputation of a back-alley brawler with an intense dislike for rams (the mascot at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and wolves (the mascot at N.C. State University). During Pete's time, the defensive players on the Pirate's football team were called the "wild dogs" because the players performed like a vicious pack of them. Other mascots have included students dressed as parrots and pirates. A live wildcat was the mascot in School Colors The school colors for East Carolina University purple and gold go back to the time when the first students arrived on campus in ECU historian Dr. Mary Jo Bratton, the author of "East Carolina University The Formative Years ," said the selection of school colors represented one of the first traditions established by the students. In the early fall of 1909 the administration asked students for their suggestions on school colors. Old gold and royal purple won the vote. In the following year, the colors carried over to the school's first baseball team, a club team, that won most of its games. According to Bratton the opening game produced a 6-2 win for East Carolina against a local Greenville team. The newspaper account of the game credited the effective cheering of the young ladies of the school for "winning the victory for the purple and gold." East Carolina Basketball
