2 General Information LOCATION San Diego is a vacationers dream, offering something for everyone. Whether you want to relax and rejuvenate or get active and explore the sights, you can do it all in this coastal city that has abundant sunshine, warm weather and 70 miles of pristine beaches. It also has many popular attractions, great craft beer and fantastic food. The San Diego area provides visitors with a diverse array of places to see and things to do. The 18 incorporated cities in San Diego County are home to 6,300 eating establishments, 92 golf courses, 15 museums and many luxury spas. The area also offers hiking, camping, fishing and numerous sporting activities and events. Some of the city s biggest attractions include the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego and LEGOLAND San Diego. 10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CORONADO AND THE SAN DIEGO AREA 1. Coronado isn t actually an island, although many people think it is. It s connected to the mainland by the Silver Strand, which is a long isthmus that runs south of the island and connects it to Imperial Beach. 2. The sand on Coronado is among the softest in southern California and is ideal for building sand castles. In fact, a man named Bill Pavlacka, known as the Sandcastle Man, creates a large, intricate sand sculpture in front of the Hotel del Coronado every day. 3. Ronald Reagan was the first person to drive across the Coronado Bridge when it first opened in The Hotel del Coronado was largest resort in the world when it opened in San Diego is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest city in the United States. 6. San Diego is the Craft Beer Capital of the World with more than 100 breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs. The city is also the birthplace of the Double IPA, or Imperial IPA, also known as San Diego pale ale. 7. San Diego has more farms than any other U.S. city. There are more than 7,000 farms in the city and 347 organic produce growers in the area. Ninety percent of the nation s avocados come from San Diego County. 8. San Diego is home to the largest oceanographic museum in the U.S., the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. 9. San Diego was home to the first drive-in restaurant in the U.S. It opened in 1951 by the man who later founded Jack in the Box. 10. The University of California, San Diego s Geisel Library in La Jolla is home to the world s largest collection of original Dr. Seuss manuscripts and other materials.
