Now they can end it, but it won't be easy. :\ zusa Pacific and Central \Vashington meet again on the gridiron, this rime in ;\ zusa, and this time in the N:\L-\ playoffs. The 2 teams square off in tonight's N,-\L-\ quarterfinal action with the winner to advancing to next week's semi-finals. ON A ROLL: Since suffering back-to-back road losses to end September,,-\zusa Pacific has won 7 straight, tying the 1985 Cougars for the longes t win streak in program history. This season's 9 victories are also a school record, breaking the 1980 standard of 8 wins. SERIES NOTES: Central Washington has won the 2 previous meetings with,\ zusa Pacific, dumping the Cougars 28-7 in,\ zusa last year before handing out this year's hammering in Washington. In those 2 wins, Wildcat RB Dan Murphy ripped apart the Cougar defense, rushing for 365 yards on just 39 carries (9.4 avg.) and scoring 6 IDs (3 in each game). In this year's meeting, he rushed for a school-record 269 yards to carry then-no. 14-ranked Central Washington to the crushing victory over then No. 15-ranked,-\zusa Pacific. CWU needed just 10 plays to tally 28 points on 4 IDs with Murphy collecting 3 of them, including one on a 38-yard run with 11 seconds left in the first half. That was enough to put away the Cougars. AT HOME BY NIGHT: The Cougars enjoy the nightlife. Azusa Pacific has won 8 straight night games, including 6 at home this year. The 6-0 home record is the best for any Cougar season (their last loss in Azusa was last year's 28-7 defeat to CWU). Central Washington has played 15 straight day games and hasn't started a game under the lights since suffering a 36-6 loss at UC Davis, Oct. 4, DAZZLING DEXTER: Senior COUGAR CAREER RECEIVINC: All-American WR Dexter Davis, Player Rec Yrds Avg TD Azusa Pacific's first-ever singleseason 1,000-yard receiver, now Dexter Davis (1996- ) 169 2, Paul Nath ( ) 199 2, has a pair of 1,000-yard seasons to his credit after a 10-catch, 120- CAREER ALL-PURPOSE YARD! yard game vs. Taylor. For the season, Davis has a school-record Player Rush Rec Ret Net 82 catches for a school-record 1,047 yards. In the Christian Okoye ( )3, O 3,65! Dexter Davis (1996- ) 17 2, ,45 Cougars' victory over La Verne earlier this season, Davis set a Cougar game record with 238 receiving yards and tied another school singlegame record with 4 IDs, 3 that came on.catch-and-runs of91, 88 and 26 yards. He is currently second on Azusa Pacific's all-rime receiving and all-purpose yard charts. BUFFED OUT OFFENSE: On the season, senior QB Geoff Buffum is 189-for-309 (.617) passing for a school-record 2,537 yards (he broke Brian Hunt's 1990 record of 2,530 in the win over Taylor). He has tossed another school season-record 20 IDs, and at this _pace, is on course to break the school season completion percentage of.597, set by David Russell in 1985 (l 14-for-191). As outstanding as his entire season has been, Buffum has been even more impressive in his past 6 games, completing 110-of-156 (.705) passes for 1561 yards and 14 IDs with just 3 interceptions. In the midst of this current hot streak, Buffum put together perhaps the finest game ever by a Cougar QB, completing 19-of-23 passes for a school-record 415 yards and 5 IDs in the Cougars' victory over La Verne. JACK OF ALL TRADES: Junior Jack Williams, one of the best 2-way players in the NAIA this year, is 1 of only 6 Cougars ever to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Thanks to yard games, Williams has registered 1,192 rushing yards in 10 games, fourth on the Cougar single-season rushing chart and already 10th on the career chart. Against Chapman, he rushed for a careerhigh 230 yards on just 19 carries (12.1 avg.) and scored 1 TD. It was the fifth best single-game performance in,\zusa Pacific history. Against La Verne he tallied 160 yards on just 15 carries and scored another TD (71 yarder). On defense, he has 20 tackles, a fumble recovery, 2 picks (including 1 in the end zone) and 2 deflections, both clinching Cougar victories.

Of the 3 teams that won on the road, 2 - Central \Vashington and Huron, S.D. - go back on the road again this Saturday. For the Wildcats, it will be their 11th consecutive playoff road gam e dating back to their last home game in the opening round of the 1990 playoffs. THE REMATCH: Central Washington will attempt to complete a season sweep of.-\zusa Pacific in tonight's N.-\L-\ quarterfinal playoff game. The Wildcats opened their season Sept. 19 at Ellensburg by defeating the Cougars The final score wasn't really indicative of the true nature of the game. -\zusa Pacific actually had the advantage for most of the first half and had the opportunity to go up by 2 scores at one point before a 57-yard interception return by Brandon Christensen completely reversed the momentum of the game. The Cougars trailed by only a 10-8 count before Dan Murphy raced 38 yards for a touchdown with 11 seconds left in the first half. Murphy then added a pair of third quarter touchdowns on runs of one and 41 yards and the Wildcats scored twice on defense to break the game open in the second half. Cougar quarterback Geoff Buffum completed 21 of39 passes for 21 7 yards, but couldn't offset a school-record 269 rushing effort by :\lurphy. ABOUT THE WILDCATS: CWU has won 3 straight games since losing 3 of 4 in the middle of its schedule to almost drop out of the playoff picture. A hot quarterback has also sparked CWU's resurgence. Senior Casey Jacox has thrown for 300 or more yards in 4 of his last games. Jacox is averaging yards and 3 touchdowns per game over the past 5 games. Jacox, who is CWU's No. 2 all-time career passer behind Seattle Seahawk quarterback Jon Kitna, has completed 195 of 329 passes for 2,474 yards and 22 touchdowns. Only Kitna has posted better single-season numbers. As good Casey Jacox as Jacox's numbers are, he still has had to play second fiddle to Murphy, who has rushed for 1,440 yards and 18 touchdowns. Twice this season, Murphy has scored in overtime to give CWU a victory, including Saturday's first-round playoff win over Rocky Mountain. Murphy netted 131 yards on 29 carries and scored 2 IDs against the Bears and also caught a career-best 6 catches for 52 yards. HISTORY LESSON: Winning in the regular-season, even by a lopsided score, is not always an indication a team will repeat that victory in the playoffs. In 1991, CWU led PLU 42-7 at one point on the way to a victory. But, the Lutes then stunned the No. 1 ranked Wildcats 27-0 in the playoffs. In 1995, CWU upset top-ranked Western Washington in the opening round after losing to the Vikings during the regular-season. OTHER SERIES NOiES:,-\zusa Pacific hasn't had much luck with the Wildcats off the gridiron, either. In 1988, Central beat the Cougars 12-6 in the West Coast regional baseball playoffs. The 'Cats also ended the Cougars' basketball season 2 years ago, rallying from an 18- point first-half deficit to post a win in the second round of the NAIJ\ basketball tourney. MORE ABOUT THE WILDCATS: C\'\1J, which is competing in the NAIA playoffs for the ninth time since 1984, has an all-time playoff record of The Wildcats have reached the semifinal round 4 times (1984, 1989, 1990 and 1995). In 1995, CWU advanced to its only championship game, rying Findlay, Ohio to share the title... The Wildcats posted thm worst home record (1-3) since 1980 this fall, but are unbeaten in 6 road games, including last Saturday's playoff win at Billings against Rocky ~fountain. CWU brings a 7-game road winning streak into the game. The streak began at Azusa last November... CWU is 5-1 this season when QB Casey Jacox hasn't been picked off and 2-2 when he has. In C\'\1J's 6 road games, Jacox has thrown just 2 interceptions, both last week at Rocky Mountain... RB Dan Dan Murphy Murphy set a school single season record against Rocky Mountain by posting his eighth 100-yard rushing game... :\lurphy, who is CWU's all-time leading rusher with 2,923 yards, ranks second in career scoring U'lth 246 points... Three Wildcats on this year's team also played on CWU's 1995 national championship team - Jacox and offensive lineman Mark Doll and Evan Ayres.
