2 The spirit of Dr. J. de Koven Killingsworth, to whom the 1957 Panther is affectionately dedicated, is one of Clark's richest traditions. Heartwarming, with lofty purpose, "Prof's" story at Clark throbs with an unceasing devotion to high ideals. A native of Texas and a graduate of Waco's Paul Quinn College, Dr. Killingsworth came to Clark first in 1924 as instructor of music. After a year, he relinquished the position to accept employment with the world-famous "William's Jubilee Singers." After teaching at Brick Junior College, Bricks, North Carolina, and following study at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, he returned to Clark in 1933 and became chairman of the Department of Music, the position he holds until now. Subsequent study at Chicago Conservatory of Music earned for Dr. Killingsworth two master's degrees in music; and in 1949 he was awarded the Doctor of Music degree by his first alma mater, Paul Quinn College, in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of music. He has traveled extensively in this country and in 1954 attended the' well-known music festivals of Austria and Bayreuth, Germany, while also visiting France and other European countries. Ever lending his energies and ability to worthy causes, Dr. Killingsworth has for many years served as precentor for the Central Jurisdictional Conference of the Methodist Church, of which he is a member. He is a member of the Church's Worship and Fine Arts Committee and the National Music Teachers Association. Other organizations are Music Educators National Conference and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. A deep and abiding interest in music and related arts has led Dr. Killingsworth to the employment of many efforts in order that Clark students experience diversity, richness and 'joy which music offers those who understand and appreciate it. To foster among Clarkites the development of music understanding and appreciation, Dr. Killingsworth inaugurated the All Star Concert Series of the Sunday Evening Cultural Hour, the annual "Festival of Music," and annual student concerts. The Conductor of the renowned Philharmonic Society has helped carry the Clark story to other areas of the nation with his famed United Negro College Fund Choir. - The man himself modestly foreshadowed by superior achievement in academic, professional, and civic areas-is a true humanitarian, loyal to Clark and her students. Towering in sincerity and integrity, Dr. Killingsworth has more friends than most people do acquaintances. Dr. Killingsworth will be remembered for a long time by those whose wills he aroused, those whose lives he filled with new illumination. 3

Indeed, it is we as others see us. In constructing the annual, the staff, as in the past, has striven to furnish a composite account of Clark life and, while so doing, to achieve scope in coverage, excellence in photography, clarity and brevity in editorial comment, and imaginativeness in makeup and design. After receiving once-overs flippant and serious - Panther will eventually find its way to the shelf by seemingly forgotten to collect the inevitable dust. But there will come a day perhaps the fireside when one will remove the Panther from the shelf, brush away the dust, and tap the reservoir for memories of the days so pregnant with meaning. Through his continuous efforts to carry the Clark story abroad, Dr. Brawley has won countless supporters for the institution. A man with vision and foresight, a man with ability for planning, a Dr. Braw itiative for successful completion, ley is acknowledged throughout man with in- the nation as a top college administrator, a staunch Methodist, and as a congenial, helpful, and So closely has James P. Brawley been associated with Clark progress that it is altogether fitting that these pictures, showing both campuses, be placed on the President's page. Clark has known four locations: a small schoolhouse in Atlanta's Summer Hill, a corner at Whitehall and Mc Daniel, South Atlanta at the end of Capitol A venue, and the present site which was constructed between 1939 and sincere person. One of the most astounding aspects of Dr. Brawley is his ability to maintain his characteristic mild, gentle manner after long hours Leete Hall, on the old campus in South Atlanta with reports, faculty meetings, interviews, and countless miles that he travels in the interest of his work for Clark College.
