The gatherings focus on different aspects of the Brothers vocation and provide formative opportunities for them to deepen their vocational call and do so in community with Brothers from across the country. This gathering focused on the topic of apostolic spirituality, asking the question How do we as Brothers bring a sense and practice of spirituality to our students and the colleagues we partner with, as well as learn from them? In addition to the formative workshop time, the Brothers had opportunities to be together in community, in prayer, and in enjoying the nature surrounding them in Napa. In Brother Armand s words, Every life makes a contribution. For the Brothers of the Christian Schools there is an entire organization in jeopardy of being forgotten. One Call, Many Voices is an attempt to glean the importance of the role of Brothers in general and the contribution of individual lives. Brothers continue to pass away and with them, a record of their spirituality, educational principles and attitudes - a record of what it means to be a vowed Lasallian Brother. 6 Catholic organizations worldwide, including dioceses, schools, hospitals, and religious institutes, specializing in Catholic Responsible Investing. Intercom focuses on unity in diversity The new issue of Intercom focuses on unity in diversity and how that is lived throughout the 79 countries where the Lasallian mission is present. Intercom features two stories related to the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN), including a story on Centre Notre-Dame de La Rouge in the Francophone Canada District. It also features Bethlehem University, the only Catholic university in Palestine, and an interview with Vice Chancellor Brother Peter Bray. The Institute publishes Intercom for the Lasallian family. Donation received from the Larkin Endowment Recently the Midwest District received a gift of $2,116 from the Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota. The note on the page mentioned it was from the Robert E. and Florence D. Larkin Endowment. The District database showed that only Mrs. Larkin was living, but that she was marked "No Mail." After contacting the Foundation and asking about writing to Mrs. Larkin, their representative said that she passed away three years ago. But at some point, she and Mr. Larkin had established in their estate plan an endowment for the Christian Brothers of the Midwest, the Senior Brothers Fund, to begin after their deaths and to continue in perpetuity. The lady said, "This gift will just come to the Brothers every year. Hopefully the same amount or higher, based on the value of the endowment. No need to send a proposal or anything to request it. We are just fulfilling the wishes of Mr. and Mrs. Larkin, who obviously thought very highly of the Brothers." Thank you to Praesidium Board members The Brothers of the Midwest District extend a thank you to the members of the Praesidium Review Board who assist the District with their insights and recommendations for the protection of children and vulnerable adults and also for the protection of members of the District. The local members are volunteers who work in accordance with the policies and programs established by Praesidium, the national leader in abuse risk management. Its mission is to create safe environments that protect the children, the elderly, or vulnerable adults from abuse, and also environments that protect employees, volunteers, religious and clergy from false allegations of abuse. Recently, Tom Artz was reelected as the Chair of the Midwest Board, and Robert Walsh and Jack Leyhane joined as new members. After seven years of service Ernest Stark ended his term of office, although he continues to serve on the National Review Board of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Thank you to all the Board members, and special thanks to Ernie! 8 th Day Center for Justice will close The Chicago based 8 th Day Center for Justice announced that its final year of operation will begin this fall. The Center will close in September The decision came after consideration, exploration and discernment. The Center was founded 43 years ago by six religious congregations to be a critical alternative voice to oppressive systems. Since that time, it has grown to a 35 congregation coalition that works with many partners. The Center has experienced the effects of the diminishing reality facing religious congregations. Closing with dignity emerged as the best decision at this time. Brother Larry Schatz attend Rome meetings During the last week of April Brother Larry Schatz, Visitor, attended the joint visits of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious to various Vatican congregations and commissions. He is the only Brother on the Executive Council of CMSM representing 4,000 Brothers in the U.S. The purpose of the visits is to keep the Vatican informed of the current realities of religious life in the U.S.

7 Recurring themes from the visits include the need for ongoing formation, the need for quality formators to ensure quality accompaniment, and the emerging use of the term co-essentiality to describe the roles of the hierarchical and the charismatic church.
