The eagles at the CPN Aviary had all suffered debilitating injuries. NASA had the privilege of a personal visit with a Golden Eagle suffering from an eye-sight disability. Mayanabe s (Potawatomi for He sees poorly ) disability was caused by lead poisoning. While enjoying Mayanabe s company, NASA noticed the eagle s perked feathers. The aviary employees informed the students that this was a positive reaction to the group s aura. They further explained that he was comfortable and did not feel threatened. The CPN Aviary doesn t only care for eagles. Another raptor that has flown into the Aviary s care is a Peregrine Falcon. Thomoyake Comanche for Thunder, or literally The Heavens are Singing was given up by her previous falconer owner. NASA enjoyed over an hour of educational conversations with the aviary staff and wind-blown experiences with the eagles. In Potawatomi origin stories, the Eagle intercedes with the Creator to save humankind. To Natives, the MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK PAGE 7 Eagle also represents protection of prayers to the heavens. For more information, you can contact the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Eagle Aviary by phone at , ext.1496 or visit their website at SSC student Sunny Weddle visits the CPN Aviary where she views the Golden Eagle named Mayanabe. By Sunny Weddle, SSC Staff Writer Members of the Seminole State College Native American Student Association (NASA) recently took a trip to the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Eagle Aviary and had an upclose experience with eagles living under special care. The CPN Aviary offers homes to injured eagles, and is also a source for cultural ceremonial events. The facility also opens opportunities to reconnect tribal members with the living eagle. During the trip, NASA members admired a gathering of Bald Eagles within the architecture of the main enclosures. The facility is the first of its kind to incorporate culturally significant elements into the facility design. The architecture focuses on practices to provide the eagles with permanent homes in an environment that replicates a portion of the eagle s wild habitat.
