2 Nathan Tomasello (17 pts.), M. Jordan (4 pts.), Bo Jordan (16.5 pts.), Myles Martin (21 pts.) and Kyle Snyder (24.5 pts.). SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE Ranked No. 19 in this week s USA Today/ NWCA Coaches Poll, Arizona State is 1-0 on the year with a come-frombehind win at Northern Colorado. Like Ohio State, the Sun Devils competed at last Sunday s Journeymen Classic with one champion and eight top-three finishers. Arizona State finished second at last year s Pac-12 Championships and 33rd at the NCAA Championships. FEATURE MATCH-UP The first time Kyle Snyder steps on a mat with a Scarlet and Gray singlet on this season will be historical as it will mark the first time an Olympic champion had returned to compete at the collegiate level. His opponent on Saturday will be fourth-ranked Tanner Hall, a NCAA qualifier last season as a true freshman for the Sun Devils. He finished third at the Pac-12 Championships. The other battle of top-10 opponents occurs at 174 lbs., where top-ranked Bo Jordan is expected to make his debut against No. 9 Zahid Valencia, a UWW Junior national champion who is 7-0 thus far for the Sun Devils. LAST YEAR VS. ASU A string of three straight bonus point wins was more than enough for Ohio State, as it rolled to a 28-9 victory over Arizona State at St. John Arena on Nov. 20, The wins were highlighted by major decisions from top-ranked Nathan Tomasello and Micah Jordan as well as a dominating 16-0 tech fall by Johnni DiJulius. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING M. Jordan leads the team in nearly every category thus far, including wins (eight) and technical falls (four). He s also averaging 14.2 points per match, the second highest mark on the team. Behind him is Moore, who in seven matches thus far is averaging 10.0 points and a team-high 4.57 takedowns/match. Ohio State used 25 different wrestlers in duals last year, the most of any team in the country. Unranked Buckeye wrestlers own two wins this year over ranked opponents. Both of those wins came at the EMU Open from Brendan Fitzgerald. The Buckeyes are 11-7 vs. ranked opponents over the last two years. NATIONAL EXPOSURE Wrestling fans will have more opportunities than ever to see the Scarlet and Gray on BTN this year. A total of four duals -- three at home -- will appear on the network, starting on Dec. 8 with a showdown against Missouri inside St. John Arena. The Big Ten home opener against Rutgers (Jan. 8) will also be shown, along with the Feb. 3 dual vs. Penn State at the Schottenstein Center. Ohio State s Jan. 27 dual at Iowa will also be on the network. Between 2002 and 2016, the Buckeyes have had 11 NCAA qualifiers at the weight with four titles, two third-place showings and one each at fourth place, sixth place and seventh place. The Buckeyes also lead the nation with 128 points scored during that time span. The Buckeyes production at 141 falls on the backs of Stieber, Jaggers, Hunter Stieber and Reece Humphrey. Between , Ohio State had eight podium finishes in those nine years, four of which were NCAA titles. 10 HEAD COACH TOM RYAN Tom Ryan has led the Ohio State wrestling program to unprecedented heights, culminating in 2015 with the program s first-ever national championship. The 2015 Big Ten, NWCA and InterMat Coach of the Year, Ryan concluded his 10th season in Columbus last March by watching both Myles Martin and Kyle Snyder win NCAA titles on the way to the Buckeyes fourth top-three finish at the NCAA Championships in the last 10 years. In all, Ryan has coached six different student-athletes to 10 national championships as Logan Stieber (141 pounds) was a four-time champion, J Jaggers (141 pounds), the 2009 Ohio State Male Athlete of the Year, was a two-time champion in 2008 and 2009, Mike Pucillo was the 184-pound champion in 2008 and Nathan Tomasello the 125 pound champion in In 2016, two new names were added to the list - Kyle Snyder (285 lbs.) and true freshman Myles Martin (174 lbs.). In the NCAA championship team race, the Ryan-led Buckeyes have finished in the Top 10 in nine of the last 10 seasons, including the 2015 national title and back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2008 and Additionally, Ryan and his staff have coached 16 NCAA finalists - Stieber ( ), Martin (2016) Jaggers (2008, 2009), Pucillo (2008, 2009), Tomasello (2015), Kyle Snyder (2015, 2016), Nick Helfin (2014), Lance Palmer (2010), Reece Humphrey (2009), J.D. In addition to the successes of Jaggers, Pucillo and Stieber on the national level, under Ryan s guidance Lance Palmer ( ) became just the second four-time All-American at Ohio State. Within the Big Ten Conference, Ryan has coached six Buckeyes to league titles in Snyder (2016), Tomasello (2015, 2016), Pucillo (184 pounds in 2008), Palmer (149 pounds in 2010), Logan Stieber (133 pounds in 2012 and 2013, 141 in 2014 and 2015) and Hunter Stieber (141 pounds in 2013). Ryan brought on board some of the best coaching talent in the nation in Joe Heskett, Lou Rosselli and Tommy Rowlands. Two years later, this staff would propel the Scarlet and Gray to the program s best finish in the NCAA championships. Backed by a pair of national champions -- Jaggers and Pucillo -- for a total of three finalists, Ohio State earned 79 points for the first of consecutive runner-up finishes. The following season, Ryan and Ohio State nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NCAA championship history when three Buckeyes (Reece Humphrey at 133 pounds; Jaggers and Pucillo) advanced to the finals with the team lead. In one of the tightest team races in recent championship history, the Buckeyes were clipped by Iowa by 4.5 points as Ohio State finished with 92 points compared to the Hawkeyes Prior to coaching at Ohio State, Ryan was the head coach at Hofstra from While with the Pride, Ryan earned Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Association and Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors seven times. 12 HE S GOLDEN Big Ten Champion. NCAA Champion. World Champion. Kyle Snyder can now add another line to his resume: Youngest Olympic wrestling gold medalist. The latest chapter in the storybook rise of Kyle Snyder was written in Rio last August. It had all the usual elements - drama, intrigue, suspense - and ended like they all do: with Snyder atop the winners stage. But this time, there was an Olympic gold medal draped around his neck. Now, he had the only thing missing from his trophy case. Along the way, the 20-year-old junior-to-be made the impossible seem inevitable. It started with a World championship win last September. Then he added Big Ten and NCAA titles this past March. Three weeks later, Snyder sealed his spot on the Olympic team at the Trials in Iowa City. Sunday s 2-1 win over World No. 3 Khetag Goziumov of Azerbaijani made him the youngest Olympic gold medalist in U.S. wrestling history, capping a 12-month run that has been equaled just once before. In the gold medal match, Snyder avenged a loss from earlier this summer to Goziumov at the Grand Prix of Germany. He scored a point in the first period on a pushout, another one early in the second on another pushout and held on for the final minute after the lead was cut to 2-1. A HISTORICAL CONTEXT Sunday s victory made Snyder only the second Ohio State wrestler to earn an Olympic medal, and the first to do so in 92 years (Harry Steel won gold in the 1924 Games in Paris). He s also the first active Buckeye wrestler to medal at the Olympics and the first active Buckeye student-athlete to win gold since Jerry Lucas (basketball) in Just 20 years old, Snyder supplanted Henry Cejudo as the youngest Olympic champion in U.S. history. Cejudo was 21 when he won gold at the 2008 Beijing Games. Snyder s win also continues a U.S. streak of at least one men s freestyle champion in every Olympics since OPENINIG ROUND, QUARTERFINAL WINS In the quarterfinals, Snyder shut out Albert Saritov of Romania, breaking the match open with a four point body lock and lift early in the second period, taking a 3-0 lead and increasing it to 7-0. It was much of the same in the first round against Cuba s Javier Cortina, as Snyder built a 3-1 lead after the first three minutes and wore Cortina down with a combination of takedowns and pushouts to secure a 10-3 victory. Snyder punched his ticket to the gold medal match thanks to furious comeback in the final three minutes against world No. 6 Elizbar Odikadze of Georgia in the semifinals. After falling behind 4-0 quickly after the opening whistle blew, Snyder methodically wore down Odikadze, eventually breaking him in the final two minutes after getting three straight pushouts. Down 4-3, Snyder took Odikadze down, pushed him out, took him down again and added one more pushout. The end result was a 9-4 decision that was a testament to his superior conditioning and sheer willpower. 12

13 WELCOME HOME In front of a crowd of over 105,000, Snyder was honored at Ohio State s season-opener against Bowling Green. QUOTABLE Snyder on gold medal match: It was a tough match. I wrestled that guy like a month ago and he beat me, so I m happy that I ve been able to improve on that performance, and, I keep saying it, I m really thankful and grateful that I ve even had this opportunity wrestle and my family and friends have been down here, to share it with them. On his emotions after winning: I ve been super emotional at times on the mat when I m wrestling. I think it s just, maybe I was in shock. I don t know. I was definitely really happy, happier than I ve ever been on a wrestling mat. On his semifinal win: I never feel like I am out of a match, so, down 4-0 in the first 20 seconds, there is still a lot of time left to wrestle. If I don t have the power to score four points on a guy, then he is probably better than me. I am just confident in myself. 13
