Zellous led Pittsburgh to a 2-1 record this week including a 42-point effort in the Panthers loss at No. 20/24 Florida on Sunday. Zellous 42 points were half of Pitt s point total against the Gators and a record for the most points ever scored against a Florida team. She was 13-of-24 from the field, 3-of-4 from 3-point range and 13-of-14 from the foul line. In the Panthers win at Florida A&M last Friday, the senior guard notched 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 3-point range. Zellous tallied 26 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the field in a win against Wagner at home on Dec. 16. Zellous averaged 29.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists for the week, while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 86.7 percent from the foul line. BIG EAST Fr e s h m a n o f t h e We e k Da Shena Stevens, St. John s Fr., F (Stamford, Conn.) Stevens helped lead the Red Storm to a 3-0 week, including two wins to capture the St. John s-chartwells Holiday Classic title. The freshman forward came close to averaging a double-double on the week with 11.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Stevens posted three double-digit scoring efforts and two 10-or-more rebounding performances. Against Howard on Dec. 16, she connected on 50.0 percent of her attempts from the field, scoring 12 points. Stevens led the team with 10 boards and added nine points against Buffalo last Friday to advance STJ to the championship game. She then helped lead the Red Storm to clinch the title with a 12-point, 11-rebound effort against Boston College on Sunday. On September 1, 2007, the BIG EAST Conference launched a state-of-the-art Web site in conjunction with XOS Technologies. The site retained the conference s familiar web address org and continues to be an excellent source for the latest news and stories on happenings around the BIG EAST, including the 16 women s basketball schools. This new site is also a reliable source for new extensive video coverage on BIGEAST.tv, the new online home for live and on-demand streaming video, including live games and highlights from many BIG EAST women s basketball games. Up-to-the-minute standings, along with team-by-team and composite results are also updated at the conclusion of each game. National polls, weekly award winners and team notebooks are updated each week. The new BIG EAST Web site also will give users access to live game updates, updated team and conference statistics, rosters, features, recaps, photo galleries and more. The Media Guide along with an in-depth Records & History Section are located on each sport s page. In addition, a Photo/Logo Gallery is conveniently located on the front page. This Gallery includes headshots/ action photos of head coaches and selected current players. The pictures may be downloaded for media use. The photos are available in both low and highresolution formats. Logos for every BIG EAST team and the conference marks can also be accessed. (Credit The BIG EAST Conference with each photo use). Weekly Awards The BIG EAST names a Player and Freshman of the Week, as well as a Weekly Honor Roll, each Monday during the season. Winners are chosen from nominations provided by the BIG EAST sports information directors. The information is released from the BIG EAST office and will be listed in the conference release and be available on the league web site. Annual Awards The All-BIG EAST First, Second, Honorable Mention and Freshman Teams, Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year are chosen from a vote of the league s 16 head coaches at the conclusion of the regular season. A Most Improved Player, a Sixth-Man Award, a Women s Basketball Scholar-Athlete and a Sportsmanship Award winner are also selected. Coaches are not allowed to vote for themselves or their own players. The awards will be announced prior to the BIG EAST Championship start through an released from the Conference office. The BIG EAST All-Academic Team is comprised of letterwinners who are starters or important reserves and have an overall grade-point average of 3.00 or better over the past academic year. The entire all-sports squad is announced in June after the conclusion of the academic year. The women s tournament begins Friday, March 6 and continues through the championship game, which will be played Tuesday, March 10. All games will be played at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. While this year s BIG EAST Championship includes all 16 teams, the regular season remains a crucial part of the conference schedule. The top four teams in the final regular-season standings will receive byes through two rounds of tournament play. The No. 5-8 seeds will earn first-round byes. In addition, the league holds an.808 nonconference winning percentage , including seven wins over top 25 teams. Hitting that 100-Point Mark The BIG EAST has had three teams reach the 100-point plateau on seven different occasions this season. USF has hit the century mark four times this season, a first in school history. The Bulls 126 points against Grambling State (Dec. 19) are the most scored in a Division I game this season. USF also beat Central Connecticut (Nov. 15), Stetson (Nov. 18) and Southern (Dec. 22). Connecticut hit the 100-point mark twice beating then-no. 4/4 Oklahoma (Nov. 30) and Washington (Dec. 19). Notre Dame won at Boston College (Nov. 23). BIG EAST Women s Basketball Leading the National Polls Five BIG EAST women s basketball teams are currently ranked in the top 25 of the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and in the top 25 of the Associated Press Poll. The list of 30 student-athletes was based on last year s individual performances and team records who are the early frontrunners for college basketball s most prestigious honor. All 16 Head Coaches Return In a league that sent eight teams to the NCAA Final Four and four more teams to the postseason WNIT, the BIG EAST is the place to coach. All 16 coaches are returning to their respective benches, including two second-year head coaches in J. Kelley Hall at Cincinnati and Jeff Walz at Louisville. BIG EAST Preseason Awards Announced Connecticut sophomore all-american Maya Moore was named the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year. One of the most decorated freshmen in conference history last season, Moore earned the honor by a tally of the league s 16 head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players. April Sykes, who joined one of the top recruiting classes in the nation at Rutgers, was picked as the BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year.
