Message from the President Dear ISM-Kansas City Members: 2009 has arrived and we are already into the second month. Amazing how quickly time passes. February marks the start of our search for officers and board members for the next board term which begins in May. If you are interested in becoming more involved in your organization in a leadership role, board participation is a wonderful way to start. Learn how your affiliate operates, network with new and existing members in our profession and make a difference in our organization. New ideas, new faces and new members are always welcome! Please give it some serious consideration. You can make a difference by being an active volunteer in ISM-Kansas City. You may contact me or any of our current board members for additional details. The ISM-KC Board and their committees have worked hard during their term to bring new and exciting educational events and opportunities to you. Morning Session - 8:30 am - 12:00 pm "How To Deal With Back Door Selling" Back Door Selling is a whole series of probing questions that salespeople are meticulously taught to ask - primarily to technical people - well in advance of the formal negotiations. Afternoon Session - 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm "Negotiating with Single and Sole Source Suppliers" Few negotiations are more difficult than those with Single and Sole Source Suppliers. With seemingly little or no negotiating leverage for the buying company, even minor concessions from the supplier seem grueling to obtain. Dinner Meeting Session - 5:30 pm 8:00 pm "Preparation and Planning for Negotiations" A 3-phased time-tested approach to Preparation and Planning Speaker: Joe A. Rice, C.P.M., Benedict Negotiating Seminars, Inc. During the last 12 years, Joe Rice has taught Benedict Negotiating Seminars' (BNS) "How to Deal With Back Door Selling" workshop to over 1500 people at such companies as Medtronic, Lockheed Martin, GM University, Allison Transmission, Sherwin Williams, Constellation Energy, Smuckers, Ingersoll-Rand, Southern California Edison and Publix Supermarkets (where he served as Director of Indirect Procurement). Mr. Rice has over 21 years in the purchasing arena, starting as an equipment buyer and working his way up to the Director level of one of the largest supermarket chains in the country. He has also served as a project and program manager. That background has served Joe well as he has conducted BNS' Real World Negotiating(tm) Seminar at such companies as Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Delphi Automotive, General Motors, Federal Mogul, Edward Jones, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Freescale and Arizona Chemical. With a Bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences, a Masters in Organizational Management and a lifetime C.P.M. certification, Joe brings a wealth of education and "hands on" knowledge to the training of negotiating skills. The Money Museum is an interactive experience that explores the economy and the role of the Federal Reserve. Learn what goes on behind the scenes at one of the nation s 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks. See a vault full of money. Interactive exhibits will test your knowledge, like seeing if you can spot a counterfeit bill. And you ll leave with a bag of money (note: money may not be in spending form). We ll start by having a great all-you-can eat Italian buffet lunch in a private dining room at Lidia s. Your $25 registration includes lunch and the tour. Black History Month is a tribute and often times a celebration to acknowledge the contributions of African Americans to American History. Below is a small portion of the history of Black History Month retrieved from The History of Black History Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month." What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied-or even documented-when the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books. Dr. Carter G. Woodson decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. However, February has much more than Douglass and Lincoln to show for its significance in black American history. For example: February 23, 1868: W. E. B. DuBois, important civil rights leader and co-founder of the NAACP, was born. February 3, 1870: The 15th Amendment was passed, granting blacks the right to vote. February 25, 1870: The first black U.S. senator, Hiram R. Revels ( ), took his oath of office. February 12, 1909: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded by a group of concerned black and white citizens in New York City. February 1, 1960: In what would become a civil-rights movement milestone, a group of black Greensboro, N.C., college students began a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter. February 21, 1965: Malcolm X, the militant leader who promoted Black Nationalism, was shot to death by three Black Muslims.
