MORNINGSIDE ADDS LIVESTOCK MARKETING DEPARTMENT Morningside College has completed plans for a new department in Livestock Marketing. Beginning in September of 1949, practical courses in livestock marketing providing for a major in that field will be offered. Dr. Robert C. Ashby, recognized as one of the foremost authorities on Livestock Marketing in the United States, has been secured to head the new department. He comes to Morningside from the University of Illinois where he has been Professor of Livestock Marketing. In addition to his experience in teaching, Dr. Ashby has had much practical experience in the field of livestock marketing. He has served as a consultant for the Packers and Livestock Administration, U. S. Department of Agriculture, and the Livestock Exchanges in Sioux City, St. Louis and Chicago. The new department is extremely unique in that laboratory training at the Sioux City Stock Yards will be offered in addition to the regular classroom work. Students will observe conditions and procedures in all phases of livestock marketing under actual marketing conditions. This arrangement is the only known one of its kind in the educational field. The department has been organized for two purposes. First, it is to provide useful training for farm youth in livestock marketing which is a principle phase of modern farming. Understanding the market will aid in its interpretation and will thus help the livestock producer to realize a greater return for his labors. Secondly, the department will train men for careers in the livestock marketing field. There are more than sixty major livestock markets in the United States. This huge industry which provides employment for thousands,. needs young college men who have a thorough knowledge of the livestock business with specialized training in marketing. ATTENTION, CLASS OF 1919 Mrs. Charles A. Hindman (Helen Meeks), 2008 W. Palmer Ave., Sioux City, will serve as reunion chairman for the 30th reunion of your class. You will be hearing from her soon. Plan to be present, if possible, for this important meeting of the class of Entered as second class matter July 1, 1944, at the post office at Sioux City, Iowa, under the act of August 24, September to June, inclusive by Morningside College Published monthly from

2 Page 2 APRIL, 1949 Ground Broken for Gymnasium Contrast of methods used in that famous old institution of breaking ground for new structures is illustrated graphical-ly by these two scenes which span more than a half a century. The modern machine age dictates the rites shown in the picture where Dr. Earl A. Roadman, president of Morningside College ( light hat) sits at the wheel of a hydraulic crane to take the first scoopful of earth at the site of the college's new George M. Allee gymnasium, now under construction. With Dr. Earl A. Roadman, are: Al W. Buckingham, athletic director, and city and college dignitaries who took part in the ceremony. They included (left to right) Mayor Dan J. Conley, David W. Stewart, president of college board of trustees; Dale Harris, M club president; Rev. J. C. Buthman, pastor of Grace Methodist Church; Mr. Buckingham ( on the crane); Charles W. ("Pete") Cropley, student body president; A. W. Jones of Cherokee, Ia.; Dr. Roadman (on crane), William B. Danforth, alumni president, and Mr. Allee of Newell, Ia., principal donor to the building. Groundbreaking was considerably more rigorous befor e the turn of the century when Bishop Wilson Seeley Lewis turned over the good earth for the college's second building along about The University of the Northwest, consisting of "one building in the midst of a cornfield," was defunct in 1897 when Bishop Lewis was engaged to create a college. He did just that, and is shown in the photo above breaking ground for the first building in his reign over the newly named Morningside. A dream came true for Morningside College Wednesday, April 6, when ground was broken for the $500,000 George M. Allee gymnasium. The spade, for generations a tradition at groundbreaking ceremonies, was cast aside for a hydraulic crane. The machine's clamshell bucket took a big bite of earth when the crane was operated by Dr. Earl A. Ro adman, college president, and A. W. Buckingham, athletic director., Ernest M. Raun, chairman of the board's gymnasium building committee, presided at the ceremony which took the place of the regular college chapel service and attracted many of the student body as well as other interested persons. 'The building site is just east of Lillian E. Dimmitt Hall, women's dormitory. The gymnasium, which according to Mr. Buckingham will be the largest physical education building possessed by any college in the nation the size of Morningside, will be constructed of brick and tile masonry. The buff colored building will face Peters Avenue. As he broke the ground, Dr. Roadman declared that "we can see a vast time ahead for this building but we do not have sufficient imagination to see the end result of Morningside's expansion program." Mr. Allee of Newell, Ia., who has "devoted his entire life to the great northwest," and whose name the gymnasium will bear since he was the principal donor, said, "I am looking forward with the hope that this fieldhouse will become a center

3 APRIL, 1949 Page 3 for the outward activities of the college. Here will be fostered not only sportsmanship and fair play but a contribution to the strengthening of democracy and the worth of the individual and to Christian citizenship." To David W. Stewart, president of the board of trustees, the building represents "the realization of a dream not based on wishing but on courage and ability of men." Other persons who made brief speeches were A. W. Jones of Cherokee, Ia; Dr. Ray J. Harrington, the trustees' building and grounds chairman; William B. Danforth, alumni association president; Charles W. ("Pete") Cropley, student council president; Dale E. Harris, M club president; Carrol N. Smith, chairman of the trustees' finance committee; Mayor Dan J. Conley and Rev. Frank G. Bean, superintendent of the Sioux City District of the Methodist Church. Rev. J. C. Buthman, pastor of Grace Methodist Church, offered the invocation and Dr. Nelson A. Price, college vice president, the benediction. The groundbreaking ceremony was followed by a luncheon at Dimmitt Hall, attended by the speaker, other trustees and city council members. Speeches were given by Dr. Price and Mr. Raun. Mr. Stewart presided. Dr. Price stated that the building program is only one phase of a three-part expansion project. The first, he said, was removing the college from debt. In 1936 Morningside had a debt of $435,000- greater than its endowment. In 1944 the debt was lifted. The second, the speaker said, is the erection of buildings to meet necessary requirements of the college. First came the science hall, now the gymnasium. Next will be converting the old gymnasium into a library and erecting a men's dormitory. Three more buildings a lso are contemplated: A student union, a fine arts building and a chapel and auditorium. The third phase of the expansion program, Dr. Price said, is securing a "necessary endowment" estimated at between 3 and 7 million dollars. This is a continuous program but concentrated effort will be made for one year following completion of the gymnasium. The new fieldhouse is expected to be ready for the basketball season. COLLEGE DEBATERS ATTEND NATIONAL MEET Five Morningside debaters, accompanied by their coach, Prof. Paul Hunsinger, left April 10th, to participate in the Pi Kappa fraternity national debat e tournament at Peoria, Ill. Approximately 700 debat ers, representing 128 schools in 36 states, were expected to enter the tournament. 4 Page 4 APRIL, 1949 "A Thousand from a Hundred, and a Hundred from a Thousand" This slogan was enthusiastically adopted at an alumni dinner held in the barn on April 22 as the plan for raising the $200,000 still needed to build the new Allee Gymnasium now under construction. The basic t echnique, it was agreed, will necessarily be personal solicitation. Plans were discussed for getting an adequate number of volu nteers across the map in order to secure 100 per cent participation of all Morningsiders, both in Sioux City and throughoutthe country. In cities where there is a larger number of a lumni, a committee will be needed; where there are only from one to t en alumni, a chairman may be sufficient. By all means, and at whatever cost of effort, the goal must be reached, and the entire amount needed must be subscribed before the day of dedication. The feeling was expressed that this is a real job, but perfectly possible of achievement with the kind of response that will be forthcoming. 8 Page 8 APRIL, 1949 SPORTS IN BRIEF Morningside College has reason to believe that its baseball team is out to show its opponents just how the time honored game is played. The first game of the season was played at Westmar College field in Le Mars and the Maroons came out on the long end of a 12 to 3 score. The Maroons added seven walks to 11 hits and five errors to tally their scores. Joe Custer, south-paw left fielder, found the range of the right field wall and drove a terrific smash far over it for the game's only home-run. The second game of the season found the Maroons on the long end of a 20 to O score; rain at the end of six and onehalf innings put an end to the massacre, the victims being the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Bill "Rip" Enocksen and Paul Allen combined to pitch a two hit masterpiece. The Maroons smashed 13 hits off three Jackrabbit hurlers and benefited further from ten errors. Karl Kletschke, regular pitcher, who patroled right field, led the attack with three safeties, one a line drive home-run in deep right center' field. Mor ningside's base ball coach this year, is a 32 year old student who is a physical education major. Joe Broome has been associated with baseball for sixteen years, formerly pitching with Lincoln in the old Nebraska State Cornhusker League. Joe is married and the father of two fine youngsters. Athletic Director Buckingham has expressed the highest praise for Joe's managerial ability and has the greatest expectations for a fine season. HONORS TO M'SIDE BASKETBALL PLAYERS Two Maroon basketball players were placed on the North Central Conference basketball team. Henry "Dutch" Langstraat, who was also elected honorary captain for the 1949 season, and Dick Wiedenfeld, voted the team's most valuable player, both placed on the squad. Varsity letters were awarded to the following ten men: Capt. Langstraat, John Wiedenfeld, Dick Wiedenfeld, Pat Hand, Bob Horsfall, Clayton Bristow, Howard Harmon, Bob Bob Downing.
