Now Hobart College is blessed with an unusual and unique nickname, The Statesmen. The origin of Hobart s nickname came innocently enough. The football team was playing the opening game of the 1936 football season on Sept. 26, at Amherst College. The following day, The New York Times published a story describing the scoreless tie that occurred between the two teams. The article begins: In the Pratt Field opener today, Hobart and Amherst battled to a scoreless tie before a crowd of 3,000. The defensive play of both teams was superb. Hobart recorded eight first downs to Amherst s nine. The statesmen from Geneva received a lucky break in the first period when Wanzo fumbled and Benjamin recovered on Amherst s 40-yard line. The author of the story referred to Hobart as the statesmen one final time, concluding the story with: Snowball and Pagnotta stood out for Amherst, while Bowling and Wright excelled for the statesmen. And with those two references, Hobart College had a nickname. The 1936 Hobart Statesmen On Oct. 2, 2004, Hobart added another chapter to the Statesmen story, debuting Bart. The mascot was introduced at halftime of the Hobart- WPI football game. Since then, the 7-foot tall mascot has made dozens of appearances at Statesmen sports contests and several other local events. 34

Foley will become the 34th recipient of the Hobart College Alumni Association s Medal of Excellence in a ceremony during Lacrosse Lettermen Weekend, April He has served the University of Florida since 1976, beginning as a ticket office intern. In 1992 he was appointed Director of Athletics and is now considered one of the best in his field. In all, 12 Gator athletic teams have won national titles under Foley. In , a total of 11 teams finished in the top 10 of their respective sports, including five top-five finishes. When the men s basketball team won the national title in April 2006, Foley became the only Athletic Director in Division I history to direct a program that won national crowns in football and men s basketball in the same year. The following season, the men s basketball team won the national title again, marking the first time a Division I college held both men s titles simultaneously. Foley s commitment to the overall athletic program includes a plan of increased opportunities for women as three women s sports have been added under his tenure soccer, softball, and most recently, lacrosse. Foley is equally committed to ensuring academic success for University of Florida s student-athletes. Under Foley, UF student-athletes have been honored 66 times as Academic All-Americans, the fourth highest among all Division I institutions since Foley was named the Street & Smith s SportsBusiness Journal National Athletic Director of the Year in June of 2006 and the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame awarded him the 2007 John L. Toner Award. 43
