2 Mr. Lyle Saxton ITSC '97 Conference General Chair,4f /.44, an. Mr. E. Ryerson Case ITSC '97 Conference Vice Chair A Note from the Conference General Chair I trust by now you are already making plans to participate in the 1997 IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC '97) this November 9-12 in Boston, Massachusetts. ITSC 97 is hosted by 17 IEEE societies and supported by many internationally known organizations. It has been designed as a professional level meeting emphasizing high quality presentations on important ITS technical and system topics. ITSC '97 is occurring at an important time in the maturing of ITS. Conference sessions have been organized to highlight specific critical current and evolving technical and systems issues that will significantly influence ITS program success. Some of these important conference topics include: Communication design and system tradeoffs associated with deploying ITS Vision technology applications to ITS Partial and fully automated vehicle control design Microprocessor and computer applications to ITS systems Navigation and vehicle location technologies Analytic and algorithmic issues in communications and control Systems design as influenced by the U.S. national architecture ITS standards development technical issues The conference will include a mix of both invited sessions on selected ITS technical topics as well as sessions arranged around the excellent response we received to our Call for Papers. I am sure this conference will be remembered as one of the premiere technical ITS conferences of recent years. Now is the time to put the dates of November 9-12, 1997, on your calendar, and start making your plans to participate in this important technical conference. For further information, you are encouraged to visit our conference website at Lyle Saxton Conference General Chair Dr. Ichiro Masaki ITSC '97 Conference Vice Chair IEEE IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems 255 Bear Hill Road Waltham, MA Phone: Fax: For further information, visit our conference web site at

ITS is now a major part of evolving surface transportation systems. With the need to maintain mobility and improve safety despite increasing traffic volume and growing congestion, solutions to these transportation problems are being developed based on ITS technologies and systems. From in-vehicle navigation systems, to electronic "no-stop" toll collection systems, to advanced traveler information systems, ITS solutions to the travel problems we are experiencing are now being developed and placed in operational use. The organizers of ITSC '97 are confident that the consolidation of IEEE ITS interests under one technical conference will facilitate the exchange of leading edge developments for use in the next wave of ITS.
