4 Page 4 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition 2009 By Horace Corbin MINDOWASKIN PARK...The focal point of downtown Westfield is the beautiful Mindowaskin Park where one can enjoy nature and companionship while being just a few steps away from the many town services, shopping and churches. June 5, The Westfield Leader See full article at About The Town of Westfield BY HORACE CORBIN FOR THIS IS WESTFIELD Westfield is a scenic residential community that serves as a business hub for the region as well as being a commuter town for Manhattan. The town is known for its ideal suburban living with its well-kept homes, thriving downtown, parks, houses of worship, historic landmarks, neighborhood schools, cultural arts and civic organizations. Westfield is a successful community. Originally settled in the late 17th century, residents have built and nurtured the community to a town today of 10,000 households and 30,000 residents of high educational level with incomes as one of New Jersey s wealthiest. Westfield has a strong public education system with ten schools within walking distance of homes. The downtown has many restaurants, retail, professional and bank services. For other pastimes, the town has many parks, clubs, organizations, a municipal pool and state-of-the-art library. The Westfield Leader newspaper has been publishing since 1890 and archives are available on line back to 1907 at A professional police and fire department and a volunteer rescue squad protect and serve the community. The Union County police communications center and county superintendent of schools are based on North Avenue. In the heart of Union County with 500,000 residents, Westfield s surrounding communities of Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Mountainside, Garwood, Berkeley Heights, Cranford, Clark, Springfield, Summit and New Providence complement the region and contribute to the area s vibrant economy. It s an appealing habitat for residents and visitors. Form of Government Westfield residents elect their mayor, council representatives and members of the board of education. Citizens are active in government and exhibit one of the highest voter turnouts in the state. Per the town charter, the mayor and council members annually receive $1 in compensation, which in accordance with tradition they then donate back to the town. Every other week, public business meetings of the governing body, which are televised on local cable TV, take place on Tuesday nights. Public agenda-setting meetings are held on the remaining Tuesdays. The Westfield Board of Education reports to the New Jersey Department of Education. It meets on Tuesday evenings in the Elm Street administration building and is made up of nine members serving three-year terms. Every April, residents elect three members to the board and also vote on the tax levy proposed to fund the schools. Westfield relies on volunteers who are committed to public service. More than 120 citizens, as volunteers, serve on municipal boards, committees and commissions. Parent-teacher associations are active in all the schools. The directory in this publication lists more than 200 clubs and organizations of the area portraying the substantial depth of activities and interests for, and by, the citizens. Westfield Town Services BY THE STAFF FOR THIS IS WESTFIELD Administration Jim Gildea, the town administrator since 2001, oversees all municipal operations. Mr. Gildea answers to the mayor and council. Joan Thermann is Mr. Gildea s executive assistant who also serves the mayor. The town s official website is westfieldnj.gov. Jamie Lynn Drohan directs the town operations of cable TV36 television. TV36 is shared with the school system that operates from Westfield High School. Public Safety Responsible for coordinating all safety and public emergencies in Westfield, the department includes the police, fire and health departments. Police Chief John Parizeau and Fire Chief Dan Kelly, who also is Westfield s emergency management coordinator, are pivotal personnel. (continued on page 8) James Gildea Town Administrator By Horace Corbin TOWN HALL...The Westfield Municipal Building is located at 425 E. Broad Street adjacent to scenic Mindowaskin Park in the downtown. The center houses administration, tax offices, court, council chambers, police headquarters, recreation department and community room.

5 2009 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition Mayor s Note: BY MAYOR ANDREW SKIBITSKY In these extraordinary times, as our nation and the world struggles with the most serious economic conditions to exist in many decades and the news media broadcasts stories of doom and gloom on a 24/7 basis, we in Westfield must not forget to count our blessings and appreciate the good fortunes that we do have. Our central business district, the downtown, is certainly one of our blessings, as is our collective sense of community spirit. As many of you may already know, I am a frequent patron of the downtown shops and restaurants. My children have been fortunate to be employed by local merchants. Whenever I meet new people, I like to tell them that, If you can t find it in Westfield, then you don t need it! And while my enthusiasm may be a bit extreme, I do believe with strong conviction that we, as benefactors of this great community, should put Westfield First. How? Very simply by considering to do your shopping and dining in Westfield first, before taking your hardearned dollars out of town. In this way, you not only support our local merchants, professionals, service providers and eateries, you also contribute to the protection of the unique character and continued vitality of the downtown area. I want to share a brief, but significant, story with you that I think epitomizes the very essence of community spirit. A long-time resident of Westfield, now retired, recently vacationed with her husband and their friends in Palm Beach, Florida. While there, the group of friends visited a very fashionable West Westfield First Mayor Andy Skibitsky Palm Beach shopping strip. As everyone was exploring the shops and making purchases, our fellow resident realized that downtown Westfield had many of the same national brand stores as well as very similar specialty shops as West Palm Beach. She decided that she would enjoy her friends company and window-shopping, but she would spend her dollars here at home. I d like to point out here that our downtown is not only a commercial center, but also a nucleus for cultural and civic activities. So much takes place in the heart of our town. Spring and fall festivals, the annual 5k run (one of the largest in the state), sidewalk sale days, the farmers market, the Light the Night walk, and the immensely popular jazz nights are but a small sampling of community events held downtown. And Westfield is that rare place that can boast of its own movie theater, recently modernized and renovated to bring cinematic entertainment to the downtown for years to come. I d also like to point out that by participating in Westfield First, we contribute to the larger community beyond Westfield s borders. It is a known fact that walkable town centers are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution. I am very proud of our downtown, with its charming layout, its storefront facades rich with architectural distinction, and its wide variety of shops and restaurants, as well as all of the hard-working merchants, professionals, restaurateurs, and proprietors who have chosen Westfield as their business home. To promote Westfield First, I have initiated a program whereby two businesses are Mindowaskin Pond Overlook By Brooks Crandall invited to attend each Town Council meeting to introduce themselves and their products or service to the public in attendance and the viewers of TV36.There has been a very positive reaction from both the businesses and the public to this program and I intend to continue it throughout the year. If you would like more information about Westfield First or would like to share your ideas on enhancing the program, I am available to meet with you during my Saturday morning office hours. Page 5 Please call my Executive Assistant, Joan, at (908) and she will be happy to arrange an appointment for you. If you would like more information about the shops, restaurants, and happenings in downtown Westfield, check out the helpful websites of the Downtown Westfield Corporation, and the Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce, Thank you for putting Westfield First. 7 2009 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition BY PHIL ISRAEL, DIRECTOR WESTFIELD MEMORIAL LIBRARY I am told so often by people, I love your library. After thanking the individual, I am quick to add that it is not my library, it is Westfield s Library, it is your library. My job is to make certain that the residents of Westfield make the most of it. Too often people think of libraries in a traditional way, that all we have are books, magazines, newspapers and story programs for children. While the library has all of these items, it also has so much more. In these challenging economic times, the library provides a low cost community-based resource that we encourage everyone to use. At the Westfield Memorial Library you can find the latest DVD releases. The library puts them on the shelf the same day they are available at retail stores. Beyond the latest cinematic releases, the library has hard-to-find movies. The library makes it a point to purchase films shown at two of the premier film festivals, Sundance and Tribeca. We also have an extensive collection of foreign language films and documentaries. If you can t get to the library, visit the library s website, click on downloadable movies and download feature films, documentaries, travel, and instructional titles right to your computer. You can do the same with children s titles and classic television programs. For the busy on-the-go person, the library has the latest audio-book titles available on CD. These titles can also be downloaded from the library s website. You can choose to download audio-books to personal computers, or burn them to CDs, or to your MP-3 device including Apple s ipods. We have recently added a new audio-book format called Playaways. Playaways are individual titles on small MP-3 players that you can listen to as you go about your day. If music is more your thing, the library is the place to go. We have a collection of thousands of music CDs available for people of all ages and all interests, from classical, opera, heavy metal, rap, classic rock and children s titles. Once again, if you can t get to the library, the library gets to you. Music is downloadable from three distinct databases that offer classical music, American Folk, Jazz, Blues, Broadway and more. The library also has full length electronic or e-books available for download. If you are a member of a book club or have thought about starting one with your friends, the library makes it easy just borrow one of our Book Club in a Bag totes. The tote has everything you need to hold a book discussion: 10 paperback copies of the same book and a discussion guide. You can borrow everything for six weeks. No one needs to purchase individual books, and the discussion guide helps the club stay focused. If you re not certain of what book to read, join the library s on-line book club and receive the first few chapters of current popular books in your . If you like the book, come to the library and borrow it. Besides current popular books, the on-line book club includes teen titles. If you re searching for other teen or children s titles, the Youth Services Department has dozens of reading lists broken down by interest area and reading level. What s great about these lists is that they consist of only books owned by the library. Go to the library s home page, click on either Kids or Teens and then Reading Lists. Of course the lists are also available in the library. If more in-depth learning interests you, borrow a Great Course on DVD. These multihour courses taught by outstanding faculty members from around the world focus on It s Your Library, Make The Most Of It such topics as America and the New Global Economy, Philosophy, or Art. Then take what you ve learned about art and apply the knowledge to some of the area s outstanding museums for free. The Westfield Library has one of the most extensive Museum Pass Programs in New Jersey. Sponsored by the Friends of the Westfield Library, the program now boasts 14 different museums and includes the Guggenheim, Frick, the Museum of Art and Design, and the Montclair Art Museum. For the kids, select from the Adventure Aquarium, the Garden State Discovery Museum or the Children s Museum of Manhattan. The passes provide free admission to the museums and discounts at their restaurants and gift shops. For a listing of all of the museums and full details about the program, click Museum Passes on the library s home page or stop in the library. In addition to all of these new services, the library also provides help with hard-to-answer questions in both new and traditional ways. If you visit our website and click on Q and A NJ, you ll be connected to free, live, interactive search assistance. Any time day or night, a 24/7 Reference Librarian can have an instant chat with you to answer your last minute term paper questions or to help you find information for tomorrow s business report. They ll also send you a transcript of the session, including any hyperlinks that were used. As always, our reference librarians provide help over the phone and in person. They are also especially good with our public access computers, all of which have free Internet service. They can set you up with an Internet account, or teach you new technology skills through one of many computer classes. The Internet Lounge on the first floor is a great place to work on your laptop, although you can work anywhere you choose with the free WiFi service the library provides. Don t forget about the library s on-line databases. If you need business information, log on to Standard and Poors or Morningstar s database. If you re trying to find information about your family s history, try Ancestry Library, or click onto our website to be connected to more than 100 years of local newspapers. Read newspapers and magazines from across the country or around the world. And don t forget about the on-line encyclopedias, historical and medical databases. Make certain that the information you get is authoritative. Searching the Internet may be a good place to start, but you can be certain that the information from the library s databases is accurate and reliable. The Youth Service Department has specialized computers for children, too. We have four early learning literacy computers where children can play computer games and learn without even knowing it. You can borrow LeapFrog interactive books, as well as their players called LeapPads, which come with an electronic pen. When the pen touches a word, LeapPad says the word, making it fun and easy to learn how to read. The library has books for beginning reading through elementary school. Look to the library for entertainment as well. We have programs for just about every age and interest. Whether it s our weekly TGIF senior oriented programs, or our music, dance, or film programs, you ll find an event that interests you. And if you re looking for fun, educational programs for children of all ages, you ll find them here at the library. From the library s homepage, look at our online calendar and register right from your home computer. It couldn t be easier. All in all, the library has so many services we can t even list them all. It s your library, make the most of it. IT S YOUR LIBRARY Page 7 MAKE THE MOST OF IT. 17 2009 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition Page 17 Westfield Taken to HeaART BY MICHAEL J. POLLACK For This is Westfield WESTFIELD While Westfield citizens concern themselves with local politics, education, news and sports matters, the public also avails itself of the many cultural opportunities at its doorstep. To coin a phrase used by a member of the Newark Museum during an interview, Westfielders are culture consumers, willing to travel distances for exotic dishes, engaging films and exhibits. Luckily, many benefit from the town s stockpile of cultural, arts and entertainments institutions. Residents and visitors, alike, enjoy everything from dining al fresco at local restaurants before seeing a movie at the charming and recently revamped Rialto Theatre to visiting the modernized Westfield Memorial Library or the Town Bookstore, at its new location at East Broad and Elmer Streets. They also take pleasure in experiencing quality theatrical performances, courtesy of the Westfield Community Players, and world-class musical performances by the Westfield Symphony Orchestra (WSO). Under the inspired and animated baton of Conductor and Music Director David Wroe, the WSO, in association with Omayra Amaya Digital darkroom guru Karen Kaplowitz of Westfield captures the Fanwood Train Station. Dance Company and TEATRO SI, presented a dazzling display of vibrant passion, fiery romanticism and virtuoso performances to retell the classic Carmen this past February. Whether professionals at the Westfield Community Players are taking part in Arthur Miller s famed Death of a Salesman or trying their hand at Shakespeare s jubilant comedy A Midsummer Night s Dream, or alumni are returning to perform Life is a Highway (the 61st Grant/Washington School show), or Westfield High School students are producing not just another show with Kiss Me Kate, Westfielders enjoy the stage, and The Westfield Leader serves to inform the readership of the local events. Westfield boasts many art institutions that play vital roles in injecting culture to the area. For those with a musical ear, Westfield is home to the Westfield Community Band, which, each Christmas, delights the community at the town Christmas tree-decorating ceremony. If you are lucky enough, on occasion, Founder and Executive Director of the New Jersey Workshop for the Performing Arts (NJWA) Theodore Schlosberg will be outside practicing playing the giant Alphorn, a scene which would not look out of place in Switzerland or the culturally diverse Westfield. BRUSHING UP ON THEIR SHAKESPEARE...Justin Rosin playing Second Man and Bobby O Rourke as First Man, two gangsters who get a taste of being on stage, entertain the audience at the Ford s Theater in the play-within-a-play of Cole Porter s musical Kiss Me Kate, at WHS. Founded in 1972, the NJWA encourages an appreciation of the arts through instruction and performance. The Choral Art Society of New Jersey, directed by James Little, presented a lovely rendition of Handel s Solomon at Temple Emanu-El in January, and the Musical Club of Westfield regularly gives concerts at the First Baptist Church. Local galleries, such as Juxtapose, expose viewers to trunk shows, demonstrations and exhibits. In February, the lost art of silhouettecutting headed for a revival, when the gallery hosted Ruth Grabner, one of the few professional silhouette cutters in theunited States. Culturally, town residents also benefit from the annual Festifall, Spring Fling, Stamp By Susan M. Dougherty Show, Memorial Day and Halloween Parades, haunted houses and 5K pizza runs. During the summers, jazz permeates the nights. Throughout the year, concerts take place at Mindowaskin Park, while Westfield welcomes farmers markets, sidewalk sales and movie nights to keep the downtown bustling. Right next door, in neighboring Cranford, Westfielders flock to the annual Musicfest, which has featured Live and Chuck Berry in years past. Also in Cranford, right down East Broad Street, lies the Tomasulo Art Gallery, curated by Valerie Larko. Also, the school offers the Sperry Observatory for amateur astronomers to enjoy. Between all the arts institutions and cultural opportunities in the area, it helps enrich the total Westfield experience. westfield summer workshop Parent Approved! It s called The LIFE Center. It s been around since 1984, and it s one of those things that you don t hear about very often. It offers college-level classes to those of us who can be dubbed Senior Citizens, and there is no cost! There are many types of classes in writing, literature, biology, music, history, drama and art. Some of the things that you wished you d gotten into when you were young, before time sped by you. I got involved in the art classes because in my younger days, I had attended Newark Fine and Applied Arts Evening classes. I only could manage two semesters before life intruded. Raising children was an art form in itself, but I often thought about What if.? When I joined a small local arts group, I was encouraged to look into the painting and art-appreciation classes offered by the LIFE Center that quite a few of the members attended. I ve been attending for almost four years now. Every Monday, I put on my mental artist s BY BARBARA COOK beret and smock and join a group of people who are merrily splashing paint around under the direction of Professor Tony Nicoli, who has an eagle eye and the patience of a saint. We all have different styles and preferences and spend two hours trying to convey all the colors of the rainbow into something recognizable. In the afternoon, from 1 to 3 p.m., we delve into the history of art. We follow the cavemen decorating the walls to the present day. We are an interactive group and have pulled Professor Nicoli off into many tangents. Through some strange routes, he always manages to get us back on track. The classes are held in many locations that are easily accessible. You can go online at ucc.edu/go/lifecenter or call and speak to Sarah Guerin at (908) The programs run from September to the first week of May with time off for holidays. Come back to school! 21 2009 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition Superintendent of Schools Margaret Dolan Superintendent of Westfield Schools BY MARGARET DOLAN The Westfield Public School district is experiencing the largest enrollment in 30 years. Realtors tell us, and our community survey confirmed, that one of the primary reasons families move to Westfield is because of the quality of education provided in our schools. This school year, we celebrated the opening of our 10th school to accommodate the growing number of young children in our community. Lincoln School, which was built in 1926, was renovated as a result of a successful bond referendum. Our youngest children in both our district-wide kindergarten program as well as our pre-k program for children with special needs now attend this modernized school. A few blocks away, at Westfield High School, close to 1,800 students are witnessing the final stages of renovations to their school. Since 2002, our high school students have had the opportunity of learning in a state-of-the-art science wing, also supported by the citizens of Westfield. While this addition to the school was the major part of the high school bond referendum, improvements to the school have continued. This year, we installed new energy-efficient lighting in the corridors and will be adding air-conditioning to our refurbished auditorium. Building improvements, including security devices at our school entrances, have been made for both the safety and instruction of our students. Class size continues to be a priority in Westfield, particularly in our primary grades. Westfield prides itself on its teaching staff, more than half of whom hold advanced degrees. Our teachers deliver differentiated instruction to reach all of our students. Curriculum in Westfield meets or exceeds the core curriculum standards of the State of New Jersey, and our students continually surpass the state and national average on standardized tests. Student accomplishments are widespread. This year, our elementary students won writing and art contests, our intermediate students ranked at the top of science and social studies competitions, and the Model United Nations Conference was led by our own high school senior. Academics are strong in Westfield, where typically more than 95 percent of our graduates continue their education. The arts are thriving with opportunities for all levels and acceptance of our students in highly competitive regional and state bands, orchestras and choruses. Athletics has a strong tradition in the Westfield Public Schools. Our high school athletic record holds the most wins over a 90-year history in the state of New Jersey. We recently celebrated the 22nd state championship of our boys swim team. Although Westfield is steeped in history, we prepare for the future, leading our students as good citizens of the world. Our district is in the second year of an energy-conservation program, which we have implemented in all our buildings. We have been successful in decreasing our consumption of both electricity and natural gas. Within our schools, children are taught the importance of recycling and conservation, and parents have shown their support and interest in this important effort. As is stated in our mission statement, we...prepare students to become responsible citizens through rigorous educational programs which respect individual differences and diversity. The Westfield Public School district is fortunate to have the support of a community that values education and the future of its children. Together, we can accomplish this important mission. We regularly provide grants to teachers and administrators to support advancements in teaching technology, reading and language programs, the arts and many other areas enhancing the education of Westfield s children. Over the past sixteen years, with the generous support of the community, the Ed Fund has awarded over $300,000 in grants. For more information, please us or visit our web site. 24 Page 24 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition 2009 Nature s Preserve, Brightwood Park Brightwood Park By David B. Corbin On the outskirts of Westfield, near the Scotch Plains border, off of Prospect Street, 45 acres of undeveloped land, known as Brightwood Park, contains a treasure-trove of nature and science, history and culture. The homogenous mix of woodlands, fields, marshes and swamps is home to hundreds of species of flora and dozens of species of fauna. In the 1930s, two-dozen shacks in a makeshift shantytown occupied the area now known as Brightwood Park. A swamp surrounded the area and for two decades, the swampy area was used as an illegal dump. It became the unfortunate recipient of old refrigerators and tires. The garbage was cleared out and the old shacks were leveled to make way for the manmade lake in the 1960s. Westfield naturalist and teacher Noel Taylor wrote a booklet, Brightwood Park, about the ecology of the park, documenting more than 350 kinds of flora and fauna by the late 1970s. Over the years, the park has been used as a living laboratory for biology, botany and ecology students. Westfield maintains the park s natural environment, so that future generations can learn in this natural outdoor classroom, as well as to protect the wildlife in the park. 27 2009 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition Page 27 WACC Chamber of Commerce In 1948, Westfield business people met and called themselves the Westfield Business Association (WBA). Their purpose was to create greater opportunities for business within the town, further the interests of legitimate business and to assist in making Westfield a better place in which to live. The group acquired town Christmas decorations, acted on parking and organized sales events. The WBA s first retail promotion, Westfield Gift Week, awarded prizes at random to downtown shoppers. The membership quickly rose to 80 members. In 1952, the WBA incorporated as the Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce (WACC), and it laid the groundwork for many of today s successful programs. WACC is a forum to exchange ideas and information among business people in retail, service and the professions. The Chamber represents over 300 members from Westfield, Mountainside, Garwood, Clark and Scotch Plains. The Chamber helps its members succeed by being an advocate, by offering networking activities and by sponsoring town activities such as the street festivals. Membership is open to any business in Westfield and surrounding towns. Benefits and services include promotion through a directory and a website, invitation to activities, a monthly newsletter and assistance with business development. 40 Page 40 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition 2009 BY BRUCE JOHNSON FOR THIS IS WESTFIELD Ever heard of Uncle Al Drake? Or the grand baseball field he built in 1890 that was located between Summit Ave. and the Boulevard, from Park to Washington streets? How about the old ball field at Recreation Park, almost 100 years before it became Gary Kehler Stadium, with a covered wooden grandstand located near Westfield Avenue, and center field being located in the middle of the current football field? In 1900, Fair Acres Race Track opened in the vicinity of what is now Wells Street and Washington School. It remained open for various horse races for 10 years. Did you know that Christy Mathewson once pitched against the Westfield Athletic Association at Recreation Park? It was right after the 1903 season, when the Hall of Fame pitcher went in 336 innings, and the Giants were on a barnstorming run through New Jersey. How about a photo of the 1910 high school baseball team, with future athlete, singer, actor and civil rights activist Paul (Chicken) Robeson in the front row? And 1910 was also the year that both The Westfield Leader and Union County Standard ran long articles about the need for a Want to Learn Westfield History? Look It Up Online good gymnasium in town, with showers and a swimming tank. Most people know that the current building on the corner of Elm and Walnut streets was Westfield High School from 1916 to But did you know that Elm and Walnut was not the first choice when the town was looking to replace the old Washington High School (located where the tennis courts are now located, between Walnut and Orchard streets)? The original choice was going to be at the entrance to Mindowaskin Park off Mountain Avenue, across from Triangle Park. When Elm Street was chosen, Mindowaskin Park was built and opened in Girls basketball in the 20s was on an equal par with the boys team, as far as interest. And coach Martha Wheelock s girls got significantly more coverage than the boys when, in a post-season tournament, they took on a team from Guthrie, Okla., in a best-of-three series for the national championship. For weeks, the girls were the lead story in The Leader; Guthrie won the series two games to one. Tamaques Park opened in 1940, but baseball could only be played on Saturday, because the town had laws against playing baseball or going to the movies on Sunday. Susan is the Neighborhood Specialist you want on your team. The Westfield Wildcats were a semipro football team in the 40s and played their home games at something called the Downer Street Oval. In 1942, a strapping right-hander from Madison pitched for the Westfield Colored Bombers in a non-league game out in High Bridge. The following year, the same Don Newcombe who would go on to greatness pitching for the Brooklyn Dodgers a decade later, was the winner for the Scotch Plains Park Bombers in a game with the Westfield Hawks. Speaking of the Editor s Note: Westfield Hawks, their first baseman during the summer of 1945 was an athletic guy named Larry Kelley. If that name is vaguely familiar, it s because in 1936, while playing end at Yale, Larry Kelley won the Heisman Trophy as the best college football player in the country. In 1942 he moved to Westfield. How do you find this stuff? You can look it up, to quote baseball groupie Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) in Bull Durham. And where would you look it up? Well, you could go to the Library and sit in Devil s Den Special Editor s Note: If one reviews the caption of the above photo in the archives, the batboy is identified as Chick Miller, who today serves the public as a crossing guard for Westfield school children at Tuttle Parkway. front of a microfilm machine. 41 2009 This Is Westfield Our 37th Annual Edition Plains-Fanwood Times, sister newspaper of The Leader. Access the archives at Back in March 1911, the unnamed sporting editor of The Leader did a series similar to the six-parter The Leader recently ran with my Most Memorable Moments as a WHS sports fan of almost 50 years. The unnamed editor s series was introduced as follows: The Leader s sporting editor has the only complete records of big ball in Westfield, and for the next few weeks will publish some of the big games that made Westfield famous. It s a glimpse of Westfield baseball in the early days of the 20th century, including a visit by Christy Mathewson, John J. McGraw and the New York Giants on Oct. 24, 1903, when 738 fans braved stiff October winds to attend the game at Recreation Park. Mathewson was on the way to becoming one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, but on this Friday, he was touched up for four runs by the local team. Matty McIntyre, now a big leaguer, had three doubles and six putouts in left field for the local nine. You ll also find pictures of how the town looked, and you ll be amazed at the price of houses and a dozen eggs. You ll see old sports team photos, or Army photos, or wedding pictures of youthful people who are now part of the old guard in town, if they are still alive. Looking at the sports pages, you ll see that bowling was huge in town, with alleys at the YMCA, the Westfield Casino on Elm Street and Recreation Lanes on North Avenue, currently the home of a table tennis club. One of my favorite ads is during the summer baseball season of 1911, when the Westfield Invaders were part of the six-town Central Jersey Baseball League, including Bound Brook, High Bridge, Plainfield, Scotch Plains and Somerville. A Mr. A. S (J). Flagg, proprietor, took out the following ad: PLAY BALL: Everybody is talking baseball. After the games, there is no better place in town to meet the fans and players and talk it over than at Flagg s Pool and Billiard Parlor on Broad Street. By that 1911 season, Westfield had over two decades of amateursemipro baseball, and had been home to teams called the Cubs, Giants, Colts, Stars, Invaders, Westfield Athletic Club, Westfield Athletic Association, Westfield Base Ball Club and Mallen s Dogs, plus the Westfield Colored Giants and Westfield Royals. For your baseball supplies, Snyder s was the place to go, for scores of the National, American and Eastern leagues, and also balls, mats, masks, gloves and mitts (isn t a glove a mitt?). Snyder s was located at 35 Elm Street, or telephone your order at 137-R. And after baseball season, you could get your guns, ammunition, and hunting/sportsman s paraphernalia (and phonographs and records) at Snyder s! In late July 1911, when there was a big shakeup in the Invaders the manager was disgusted with the semipro players he d brought in and replaced them with college men The Westfield Inn on Broad Street was advertising a Special Table D Hote Dinner, Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m., for 75 cents. And a first-class Family and Transient Hotel Business Men s Lunch for 40 cents. Of course, if baseball wasn t your cup of tea and you wanted to get out in the country for a relaxing day, you could catch the New Jersey Central at 9:42 a.m. and for $1 roundtrip spend the day at Lake Hopatcong. For those who wanted to get farther away, a 9:10 a.m. train would take you out to Carsonia Amusement Park in Mauch Chunk, Pa., for $1.50; in 1953, Mauch Chunk changed its name to Jim Thorpe, Pa., after the death of the famous Olympian. And this stuff cannot be made up. Early in the 1914 season for the Westfield Cubs, a game at Garwood had to be forfeited. In the top of the ninth with Westfield trailing 4-3 and runners on first and third, a lengthy argument on a play at third caused a halfhour delay. Apparently when the last train to Westfield headed west, only pitcher Steamboat Cowperthwaite and catcher Al Hunt stuck around. You can look it up. If you love history, or the town of Westfield, or both, you should seriously check out the archives. Just don t hold The Leader responsible if you get a stiff neck, a sore back, or develop carpal tunnel syndrome playing with your mouse for hours and hours on end. The Devil s Den by Bruce Johnson appears in The Westfield Leader every Thursday during the school year. He invites you to contact him with comments, complaints and suggestions at bj1019@aol.com. Wow! Anyone who witnessed the high school football game between Westfield and Union at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield on October 4 certainly got his or her adrenalin level skyrocketing. After falling behind with 4:11 remaining in the game, quarterback Tony DiIorio engineered a nine play, 59-yard drive that ended with junior split end Pat Gray s eight-yard touchdown (TD) reception with one minute left on the clock to give the 4-0 Blue Devils a lead. Adding to the excitement, the Farmers responded with a march to the Westfield 15 before defensive end Willie Johnson sacked quarterback Dion Nesmith for a 10-yard loss with two seconds remaining. A desperation pass into the end zone fell incomplete to preserve the victory for the Blue Devils. DiIorio spread his passes among six receivers to complete 12 of 18 for 194 yards and three TDs. Senior Adam Bergo took the challenge to capture first in the high jump, break a meet record in the triple jump and to finish third in the 400-intermediate hurdles as the Blue Devils grabbed the UC individual team title with a 90 total at Hub Stine Field in Plainfield on May 17. Union Catholic finished second at 70 and Scotch Plains-Fanwood placed fourth with 49 points. Bergo definitely got a big boost when he cleared 6 6 to win the high jump. The method mimics the concept of Wikipedia, whereby the public maintains the records. Public participation has made this a success as evident from the information published in these last several pages. At goleader.com, you can obtain the current information for organizations, add a new entry or update an entry. More information is available from an auto-search feature for entries, which displays articles printed in our newspapers over the last 12 years. You can manually search the archives back to You are invited to enter the data of your organization. It is open to all towns and intends to be inclusive of the many things in our society arts, sports, charity and service. Similar to this concept, we are developing collaborative journalism, photojournalism and video to expand our geographic reach and depth of coverage in publishing local news, sports and community affairs. An excellent book is nearing completion a two-year effort thus far by authors collaborating online from across the country. We promote the synergism of online expediency with the higher art of publishing in print. Our expanding self-authoring online is a conduit and goleader.com/express is a service providing a financial component. We invite you to be part of these advances and to guide us with your input, comments and suggestions. I will keep you informed. Regards, Horace Corbin Since 1890 Ad Populos, Non Aditus, Pervenimus
