FROM THE REGISTRAR EDITOR'S NOTE Since July of 1949, when he succeeded C. P. Steimle, Everett L. Mar shal l has made many friends among our alumni. The Newsletter Editor asked him to prepare this page of information of particular interest to alumni. i::.verett L Marshall STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TEACHING SCHOLARSHIPS In 1949 and again in 1950, the Michigan State Board of Education made available to the four Michigan colleges of education 1,000 tuition scholarships for prospective teacher5. Michigan State Normal College re ceived approximately 300 scholarships each year and thus has 600 tuition scholarships for prospective teachers. The recipient of the scholarship must have at least a B- average and must maintain a B- average to keep the scholarship. The scholarship may be renewed for four years depending on scholarship achievement and availability of scholarships. The scholarship is worth $37.50 per semester fo state tuition and does not include local fees. The school year will be the first time that all 600 scholarships will be in use. The screening of candidates and checkin of eligibility requirements is handlej' by the Registrar. COLLEGE DAYS College Days are becoming more numerous and important each year. During the school year College Days at high schools within 75 mil es of Ypsilanti numbered between 25 and 35. The Registrar and Director of Admissions, Everett L. Marshall, is contacted by the high school and he either attends the College Day or arranges for a member of the faculty to represent Mir!.,_ igan State Normal College. D the last year the Registrar atte J 12 College Days and 10 members of the faculty attended 15 other College Days. Due to the distance or impossible driving conditions, Michigan State Normal College graduates represented the College on several other College Days. DEGREES GRANTED A total of 10,448 degrees have been granted since 1897 when Michigan State Normal College was made a fou r year College. Of this number, 7,890 were given during the fifty years ending August, In the five year period, September 1947, through August, 1952, 2,658 were granted, or 30% of the number granted during the preceding fifty years. During the three year period ending August, 1952, 1,887 degrees were granted, or 22% of the 8,661 granted in the preceding fifty-two years

UP THE LADDER Professional advancement in many fields of endeavor as well as in the field of teaching, are indicated by the following brief sketches. 7 R.O.T. C. UNIT ESTABLISHED ON CAMPU" Michigan State Normal College will offer, starting in September 1952, a full Army Reserve Offi, P.rs Training Corps program. The pro gram is divided into two two-year courses of study, a basic and an advanced. Starting with the freshman class entering in September, 1952, all entering men students will be required to take the basic two-year course. Students accepted into the advanced ROTC program during their junior and senior years will be able to earn commissions as second lieutenants in the Army upon successful completion of the program. It should be em_phasized that participation in the advanced pro gr am is on a voluntary basis, and is also selective by the Army. Exemptions from the basic pro gram may be granted by t!e College for reasons of physical disability, for previous military service, for religious reasons, and for other extenuating circumstances. Michigan State Normal College is one of nineteen colleges offering, for the first time this fall, an ROTC program in what is called "branch general." This means that students completing the program and receiving their commissions will be able to elect the branch of Army service in which they will receive that commission, subject to the needs and conveniences of the Army. Students in the basic program will spend three class hours per week in ROTC work; students in the advanced program, five. Uniforms and equipment are furnished by the Army. Students will make a twenty dollar deposit for uniforms and equipment. This will be returned to them when they leave the program and the uniforms and equipment are returned to the College. Students participating in the buvanced program will be paid for their work, and also for the summer encampment which comes between the junior and senior years, six hours credit toward graduation will be received for completing the two years of the basic program. Credit received toward graduation for participation in the advanced program will depend upon the requirements of the curriculum in which the student is enrolled. Students completing the whole four-year program will receive not more than sixteen hours of college credit toward graduation. Under the ROTC program, students can combine military training and college work and receive a commission in the Army upon graduation. Students participating in the ROTC program are deferred from the draft while they are in the program. T' will be increasingly importanl present college deferment polic.. are changed or modified, as now seems extremely likely. In the present troubled state of the world, the obli ga tion of military service falls increasingly upon all of our citizens. The problem that America faces is one of maintaining its qualitative superiority in manpower and, at the same time, giving its young men adequate military training. The ROTC program combines these two in a fashion that generally meets with the approval of most educators. America needs officers for its armed forces. It also needs teachers and trained men in all professions. Michigan State Normal College is very happy to participate in a program which insures the production of both

PRESIDEN TS RETURN TO SCHOOL fhe story behind the cover of this issue of the Alumni Newsletter is one that Michigan State Normal College tells with particular pride. From Au_gust 17 to August 22, the Normal College was host to some 300 members, wives, and families, of the School for Executives of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. This group, composed largely of presidents and deans of colleges of education throughout the country, meets every two years. Michigau State Normal College was honored in being selected as the location for the 1952 meeting. At Ypsilanti, we have long referred to our historical contribution to teacher education in the catchphrase, "oldest teacher's college west of the Alleghenies." The cover -tograph is testimony to our role.eacher education in the living t-..;ent. Pictured with President Eugene B. Elliott are, reading left to right: President Paul V. Sangren of Western Michigan College of Education, Kalamazoo, who earned his life certificate at Michigan State Normal College in 1918 and his Bachelor's degree in 1921; President John R. Emens of Ball State Teacher's College, Muncie, Indiana, a member of the class of 1926; President Elliott; President Charles L. Anspach of Central Michigan College of Education, Mt. Pleasant, who joined the Normal Colle g e faculty as head of the education department in 1930 and later became dean of administration before his resignation in 1935 to become president of Ashland College; and President Henry A. Tape of Northern Michigan College of Education, Marquette. President 'T\,oe received his life certificate at ilanti in For many years he Jed the Lincoln Laboratory School of the Michigan State Normal College before assuming the pres, idency at Marquette in Never forgetting that the lasting record of Michigan State Normal College has been established by the sometimes unsung veterans of public school classrooms throughout our country, we are none-the-less proud of these men who represent the best of the educational leadership of America. r,hey are all men who first proved their worth in the school classroom and in that light, they well deserve the i:ositions of honor and importance that they occupy today. HOME CO MING PLANS As this issue of the Newsletter goes to press, it is a little early to reveal definite details of the usual grand plans for Homecoming festivities. As early as last May, Social Director Adelyn Hollis and Student Homecojning Committee Chairman Jim Warren had called the groups together to lay the groundwork for the fa! l. The very fact that at such an early date the plans were under way is evidence that the Committee this year is out to make Homecoming a bigger and better event than ever. The date has been definitely established as October 18 when Coach Fred Trosko and his varsity men will find themselves facing Northern Illinois. Your Newsletter staff feels that one advantage of having this issue announcing Homecomin g in your hands well in advance of the date is that you will get out t that little date-book and make a careful notation of October 18. Save that day for your Alma Mater -- we'll see you then! - 5 -

LO ESE LLS ( Continued ) the world that had been described so colorfully for them in the volumes of letters from the "kids." Leaving Ypsilanti in June, their air tri p took them first to Nova Scotia, then to Shannon, Ireland and to London, England. Their European travels totaled about 3,500 miles by aut mobile and included sight-seeing in Austria, Italy, Yugoslavia, Trieste, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Holland, and Luxemburg. It is unfortunate that time did not permit their staying in Europe for Kathryn's marriage to Kurt 1'hrun in Munich in late August. This brief recital of the globetrotting Loesell family explains many of us in Ypsilanti call them good will ambassadors for their Country and for their college. This year, for the first time in over a decade, and with at least 100,000 miles of foreign travel behind them, they are all to be living in the Ypsilanti area. Russell will teach biology in Fordson High School in Dearborn next year. Kathryn will teach second grade in the Lincoln Consolidated School and, of course, "Doc" as he is affectionately known to thousands of alumni, will be at bis old stand in the Scienc e Building. UP THE LADDER Continued... Doris Quackenbush ('30) bas been named Home Service Directc Bendix Home Appliance Sales Corporation, in Chicago. She has had n years of experience in this field of home economics work, fourteen of which were with the Detroit Edison Company George Robinson ('26) has for several years been Superintendent of Schools at Melvindale and this year moves on to the Sime position in the Hazel Park, Michigan public schools or. J. Raymond Shaw ('36) was a teacher in Saline, Michigan prior to completing his training in medicine. He bas been appointed chief of the United States Public Health Service Hospital Division. His new position takes him to Wa shington where he will direct 22 general hospitals, two narcotics hospitals and 15 clinics Robert Simpson ('49) has been teaching in the Garden City, Michigan schools since his gaduation and has just assumed his new duties as Assistant Superintendent there Warren L. Watson ('30) has been appointed Principal of the new Alex Dow Elementary School which was recently completed in northwest Detroit. Warren also continues as Principal of the Dubois Elementary

TH E TRAVE LING LOESELLS Professor and Mrs. Loesell and Kathryn atop the Eiffel Tower - July 1952 Few Normal College families have established the travel record that has been built up by the Loesell family in recent years as the followparagraphs wi 11 attest. This is a ily that can truly claim the name 1 ormal College family" for their family life through many years has been closely associated with the life of the College. For over a quarter of a century, Professor Clarence M. Loesell, Head of the Department of Natural Science, has been a member of the faculty. The Loesell children, Kathryn and Russell, attended the Roos eve It School on the campus, continued on to college and won their degrees from lichigan State ormal College - Kathryn in '48 and Russell in '49. Even in their school and college days, as they traveled about the country with their parents, Kathryn and Russell were roving representatives of 1ichiga n State Normal College. Prior to their graduation from College, they had traveled in every state in the Union in practically all of the pro ' ces of Canada, and in, Jexico. With College graduation behind,--m, their travels began in earnest Russell's three years of service rn the Armed Forces had taken him to Australia, New Guinea, and the Phillipines. He headed toward the Pacific again wi th his Bachelor's degree and taught in the Iolani School, Honolulu, Hawaii, in The following year found him teaching in the American High School, Pago Pago, Samoa. While in that part of the world, he found traveling in the Fiji Islands of particular interest. In the meantime, after teaching in the Ecorse, Michigan schools Kathryn headed in the opposite direction to teach in the Munich, Germany, Dependent Schools. This provided her with an opportunity to visit nearly every country in continental Europe. In addition, vacation pe1iods allowed her time to go farther afield, visiting countries in both Asia and Africa. She was in Ypsilanti during the summer of 1951 to work on her Master's Degree, but returned to Germany for the following school year. This past summer, Dr. and Mrs. Loesell decided to leave Ypsilanti long enough to see at least a part of (Continued on Page 6)

TROS KO AP POI NTED GRID CO ACH The resignation of Huron Grid Coach Harry Ockerman last spring gave to Athletic Director Elton J. Rynearson and the Board in Control of Athletics the very difficult task of securing Ockerman's successor. Their decision was made public soon after the first of July with the announcement of the appointment of Fred Trosko of Owosso. Trosko comes to Michigan State Normal College after compiling an outstanding record as a high school and college athlete and as a coach of high.school teams. Last year, under Trosko's leadership, Owosso acbieved its only undefeated season in forty years and that with one of the smallest class A schools in Michigan. Michigan s orts write1 s r named him high schoo "Coach of the Year. " The entry of Fred Trosko to the college football scene recalls to many football enthusiasts the days of Michigan's greats just before the second World War and in particular the University of Mi chigan four horsemen, Tom Harmon, Forest Evashevski, Bob Westfall, and Fred Trosko. It was in the Ohio State game in 1939 when Trosko stole the limelight from his famous teammates by running 32 yards from a fake place kick formation -- a play which usually utilized Harmon as the ball carrier - to defeat Ohio State in the last few seconds 0f play. Following his three years of sity football at the U. of M., Trosko began his coaching career at Hudson, Michigan. This however, was soon interrupted when, after two years, he entered the Army. After playing with the Fort Riley, Kansas team, he was sent overseas, During the later stages of the war and during the occupation of Europe, Captain Fred Trosko, United States Army physical education instructor, coached an Army football tearn. lt was during his occupation duty that the new Normal College Grid mentor met the Belgian girl who later became his wife and the mother of their one daughter. ormal's new coach comes to his first collegiate coaching position with a monumental task facing him. He wi 11 have the able assistance of Arch Steel, who formerly assisted Ockerman, and Ralph A. Kohl, former high school coach also a U. of M. "great." The H (Continued on Page l r)
