A total of 12 lettermen and two national qualifiers return this season, along with a trio of seniors. And with just three freshman on the squad, the Bulldogs will not have the problem of youth that plagued the 3-8 team of At the 125-pound weight class, the Dogs return junior Grant Strickland who earned his first trip to the NCAA tournament as an alternate by taking fifth-place at the Midwest regional meet last year. He will be pushed by sophomore Phil Esposito, as well as promising newcomer Steve Cox. Esposito has battled injuries the last couple of years, so Cox could get the call to step in should Strickland go down. The 133-pound spot returns Allen Stokes who posted 14 wins as a freshman last year and took third-place at the Coe Invitational after pinning three opponents. He is joined by newcomer Chris Hampton who is likely to redshirt the season. Merrick Meyer, perhaps the team s top returner, entered the year ranked eighth at 141 pounds in the Midwest. The 174-pound spot will see the return of Tom Tajkowski who got seven wins as a true freshman last year. He will be joined by Mike Wade who is looking to gain experience in his first collegiate season, but could redshirt if Tajkowski does well. Junior Marc Heinecke and sophomore Gregg Nurrenbern will vie for top dog at 184 pounds. Last year, Heinecke won six matches at 197 before his season was shortned by an injury, while Nurrenbern had the third-most wins on the team with 19 at 174 pounds. If Heinecke takes over at 184, Nurrenbern could move up to 197. Sophomore Matt Sonn will also challenge for the 197-pound spot after gaining experience in 22 matches a year ago, but look for him to take over at heavyweight if senior Bryan Jovick can t go.
