Mr. Michael Lucas Director, North Montco Technical Career Center Mr. Todd Luke President, MAX Teaching Dr. Michael Curley Career and Technical Distinguished School Leader Benchmarking! This session will present a unique way to interpret and use data to improve student success. At NMTCC, NOCTI benchmark charts were created and used to set improvement goals for instructors, determine student learning objectives for the staff and administration and illustrate school performance at a glance. In addition, the session will share how benchmark data is used in the ISO process to improve the school s curriculum and how other schools are using benchmarking to standardize instruction across multiple program instructors. Administrators will find this session extremely valuable because it streamlines the SLO process and provides data on how limited school resources should be invested.

Beattie Career Center Mr. John Augustine Director, Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center Mr. Kurt Speicher Director, Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School Dr. Tim Rushton Director, Lehigh Career and Technical Institute In , the Pennsylvania Department of Education provided funding for a CTE Best Practices Initiative, which included the formation of the CTE Leadership Council, a group open to any Pennsylvania career and technical center director. Throughout the school year, the council met several times in order to identify key issues impacting career and technical education and to develop recommendations to resolve these issues. Join Hans Meeder of NC3T, facilitator of the CTE Leadership Council, as he shares the council s working report and engages attendees in an open forum discussion regarding its direction for Recommended participants include members of the CTE Leadership Council, CTC directors, and other school administrators. Penn State Room INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED STUDENT CERTIFICATIONS Mr. Tom Turnbaugh Director of Endorsement Operations, Pennsylvania Builders Association Mr. Jim Ellwood High School Technical Training Program Consultant, International Code Council Technical school administrators and instructors acknowledge the importance of obtaining industry-recognized student certifications. The Pennsylvania Builders Association (PBA), through its Endorsed Trade Program (ETP), improves students construction skills and the International Code Council (ICC), through its High School Technical Training Program (HSTTP), provides code training. Both organizations offer certifications that can improve students' education and knowledge of the construction trades. This joint session from the PBA and ICC will focus on the value of this certification. Alumni Lounge HELPFUL TIPS WHEN PREPARING PERKINS ASSURANCE FILES Ms. Cynthia Gross Career and Technical Education Advisor/Perkins Coordinator, Pennsylvania Bureau of Career and Technical Education Mr. Richard Steinmeier Career and Technical Education Advisor/Perkins Coordinator, Pennsylvania Bureau of Career and Technical Education This session will provide clarification and a rationale for the documentation that is required in Perkins Assurance Files. What must be included as evidence of compliance for each assurance? Who should create assurance files? How long should files be kept? Are special job descriptions required for Perkins funded staff? What do those look like? How do you keep an inventory of equipment purchased with federal funds? The regulatory requirements of the Perkins Act are implemented through assurances. Compliance with these assurances and documentation of compliance are conditions of approval of the Perkins Local Plan. Documentation must be relevant to and apply to all sites, or potential sites, covered by the Perkins Local Plan including all members of a consortium.

6 2016 PACTA Summer Leadership Conference 5 Faculty Staff Club STUDENT CAREER AWARENESS/DEVELOPMENT TOOL AND CAREER CENTER TRACKING ANALYTICS SYSTEM- STEM PREMIER Mr. Ben Martin Regional Business Development Manager, STEM Premier Mr. Brock Snedeker Assistant Director, Parkway West Career and Technology Center STEM Premier serves as a digital platform where high school students can build an educational portfolio showcasing their talents and abilities. Students can upload videos, and other education-related documents that identify their credentials to help brand themselves. STEM Premier connects the students with over 20 billion dollars of scholarship opportunities and matches the students to scholarships based on their personal profiles. In addition, STEM Premier helps students connect with postsecondary schools and corporations. STEM Premier also offers secondary schools the ability to track their students in areas such as GPA, career interests, postsecondary choices, skills, test scores and many more analytical features! Mount Nittany Room RETIREMENT 101 INFORMATION EXCHANGE Facilitators: Mr. Walt Slauch President, Pennsylvania Association of Career and Technical Administrators Mr. Gerald Miletics Advisor, AXA Advisors LLC It s never too early to begin planning for retirement. This informative workshop for administrators with 10 or more years left in your career will focus on the essence of retirement planning including investing strategies and employment agreements. 2:10 p.m. 2:40 p.m. REFRESHMENT BREAK IN EXHIBIT AREA Ballroom D, E 2:40 p.m. 3:40 p.m. BREAKOUT SESSIONS Ballroom A, B Developing and Implementing County-wide Career Guidance Plans Dr. George Custer Director, Lebanon County Career and Technology Center Ms. Lisa Fulton School Counselor, East Lebanon County Middle School Under the leadership of Mike Thompson and Betty Holmboe, BCTE consultants, the Lebanon County school districts and CTC undertook the development and implementation of Chapter 339 Career Guidance Plans. We are all now in the implementation phase. This workshop is designed to share the struggles and successes of creating and implementing these plans. In addition, school district and CTC personnel will discuss the early benefits that are being reaped from implementation increased and earlier student exposure, augmented parent involvement and activity and expanded K-12 business and industry interaction. 7 2016 PACTA Summer Leadership Conference 6 Today more than ever, educators are being held accountable for effectively utilizing data to guide program development and implementation and fiscal responsibility as well as continuous improvement within their school entity. The Berks Career and Technology Center has been effectively instituting a culture of continuous improvement for well over a decade. This session will focus on the BCTC formalized continuous improvement system from evolution to practice. Participants will be provided with the framework for replicating this well-established system and be mentored with immediate steps to begin to establish school cultural change around the continuous improvement model in time for the start of the school year. Penn State Room OPENING A STUDENT RUN CREDIT UNION Ms. Tana Lee Director of Career and Technical Education, Berkeley County School District Mr. Scott Mader Educational Consultant, Odysseyware Berkeley County School District, near Charleston, South Carolina, has one of the fastest growing, yet diverse populations in the state. As the population grew, so did the need for financial institutions to support the community members. At a local Chamber of Commerce event about Career Academies, the Heritage Federal Credit Union and district career and technical education staff began networking and then decided to open a branch near the high school with a twist it was to be run by high school CTE students! They brought their Career Academy to life. Join us to learn about the research, the curriculum and tools, as well as the ingrained learning process, the continued partnership and the opportunities for students. Alumni Lounge NURSE AIDE TRAINING AND COMPETENCY EVALUATION PROGRAM (NATCEP) Ms. Tamalee Brassington Division Manager, Adult and Postsecondary CTE, Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Career and Technical Education This session is designed to provide CTE directors with information regarding the Federal Department of Health regulations that govern the employee training program for nurse aides. If your school has a nurse aide training program or you are thinking about submitting an approval for a nurse aide training program, this session will provide details related to the delivery and recordkeeping requirements to offer such a program to meet the needs of employers. Faculty Staff Club CAREER EXPLORATION INFORMATION AND TOOLS Ms. Kim DeLellis Workforce Development Manager, Center for Workforce Information and Analysis, Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry The Center for Workforce Information and Analysis (CWIA) will present information integral to researching careers, choosing an educational pathway, or obtaining employment. In addition, CWIA will highlight career search tools found in Pennsylvania s JobGateway system.

Bring your best ideas and your biggest issues to share. This session will be offered two times to allow for maximum participation. DATA, BIG DATA AND DASHBOARDS TO IMPROVE CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION Mr. Todd Luke Vice President, MAX Teaching This presentation will demonstrate how data can be used locally, regionally or statewide to improve CTE curriculum and instruction. Participants will leave with details on how to analyze data, collaborate as PLC or PLN and create a data dashboard that shows continuous improvement within each CTE program. Ballroom C TEACHING SOFT SKILLS AND CREATING A WORKFORCE THAT WORKS Ms. Lynda Jackson Director, Technology Centers That Work, Southern Regional Education Board Developing the U.S. workforce is not just a matter of academic and technical skills. Technical professions increasingly require a broader skill set. How can career and technical educators support students by adding soft skills to their hard-core technical skills? This session will provide an overview of how to facilitate discussions with business and industry partners and ideas from CTCs that are teaching soft skills will be shared. Penn State Room MENTORING NEW CTE TEACHERS SURVIVAL Mr. Tom Baileys Administrative Director, Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County CTC of Lackawanna County has developed an extensive mentoring program to provide support and development for new CTE teachers. The program was developed collaboratively with significant input from experienced teachers on the Professional Development Committee as well as Administrators, a Counselor and the Pupil Services Coordinator. The committee developed criteria for mentors and six conceptual areas for new teachers to be mentored on. A Memorandum of Understanding was developed for payment of mentors and protégés. Checklists were developed for items to be included within each of the six conceptual areas and the MOU provides for a stipend payment to the protégés each time they complete two of the checklists. Alumni Lounge USING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES TO CULTIVATE TEACHER LEADERSHIP Mr. Ben Mordan Assistant Director, Franklin County Career and Technology Center Dr. Daniel Perna Owner/President, James Daniel and Associates Franklin County Career and Technology Center (FCCTC) established a Framework involving four Professional Learning Communities (PLC). The PLCs are designed in coordination with the Danielson Framework domains along with the PDE Student Aligned Standards (SAS) elements. The PLCs operate in a four-year cycle with PLC

9 2016 PACTA Summer Leadership Conference 8 members rotating to a new PLC each year. With this rotation, all teachers participate in each PLC, exposing them to all four Danielson domains and all six SAS elements. This framework incorporates teacher designed and led presentations where they share lessons learned, best practices and strategies. Through this process FCCTC has developed a corps of experts from within our staff. Faculty Staff Club NCCER CREDENTIALS PREPARE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES FOR CAREERS Ms. Susan Muggeo Executive Director, NCCRE Curriculum, Pearson Mr. Joe Fullerton Principal, Bucks County Technical High School As one school year ends and the planning for the next one begins, the local construction forecast has turned from bleak to terrific. Our industry partners are anticipating record growth and expanded opportunities for young graduates. With NCCER credentials in hand, high school graduates are far ahead of the competition for rewarding and sustaining careers. Furthermore, they enter the industry with a clear vision of the opportunities to advance as far as their dreams and hard work will take them. As emphasis on skilled craft training waned during the high tech glamour of the 1990s and 2000s, the construction industry is now eager to partner with career and technical education to develop the programs necessary to fill the talent pipeline. Learn about significant and historical trends in the construction industry as well as examples of successful partnerships between industry and education and how your students can prepare to build their future in a rewarding career field.
