2 About the Alumni Association Welcome to the SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association! Our 65,000+ members represent the rich history of our college from Oneonta Normal School to State University College of Education, State University College at Oneonta and, now, SUNY Oneonta. Since the school s founding, the Alumni Association has worked to maintain a lasting and positive relationship between our dedicated graduates and the college. The mission of the SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association is to connect, engage, support, and celebrate alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends. From reunions to regional events and networking opportunities, we plan more than 20 annual opportunities for our alumni and students to share experiences and wisdom. The Office of Alumni Engagement strives to keep our alumni connected in person and online through assorted programs and services. 2 SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association

4 Supporting Tradition OVER 1,000 NEW STUDENTS PASSED THROUGH THE PILLARS IN FALL George Kaywood 70 welcomed the incoming students before the ceremony. Over 250 members of the campus community participated in welcoming the new students during the event. Pass Through the Pillars New students to the campus cross through the Pillars of Old Main, which are proudly displayed on the Upper Quad. As they pass between these landmarks that have stood for 127 years, students literally walk in the footsteps of their predecessors. 4 SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association

5 Red Day 2016 Red Day Red Day is an annual event that celebrates the founding of the college. This year the Alumni Association coordinated with several offices within the Division of Student Development to offer a full day of activities to both students and alumni. The festivities included trivia and giveaways on the Quad, an alumni luncheon celebrating the transformation of Lee Hall, and an evening fireworks display over All College Field. 507 TOTAL BRICKS SOLD TO DATE Alumni Brick Garden Thanks to members of the Class of 2010, the Alumni Brick Garden is a permanent tribute to individuals who have made SUNY Oneonta the outstanding college it is today. The Garden is located in the Class of 2010 Plaza near the Hunt College Union Pond. SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association 5

6 Battle of the Red Dragons Honoring a decades old rivalry, the Battle of the Red Dragons pits the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. Both the men s and women s basketball teams go head-to-head during this annual event. Activities are hosted throughout the evening while the Oneonta Future Alumni Network hands out free giveaways sponsored by the Alumni Association. 6 SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association

7 Supporting Tradition Battle of the Hills Students and local alumni alike come out to cheer on the Red Dragons as our basketball team faces off against the neighboring Hartwick Hawks. This year, 15 student groups participated in a spirit banner decorating contest. After the Drag n Rolls Drumline performed, door prizes were awarded. 9/11 Memorial Ceremony The campus community comes together to honor the seven SUNY Oneonta Alumni who passed away on September 11, In 2016, the memorial service was held on Monday, September 12, which included participation from scholarship recipient Konstantina Salales 18, Gwen Latendorf-Shuster 68 73G, a student musical ensemble, and the University Police Color Guard. Legacy Family Reception Held on September 24, 2016, this event celebrated families with a generational connection to SUNY Oneonta. Nadine Salzman 76 and Carly Salzman 17 addressed legacy students and families. Those in attendance also received complimentary family photos as a keepsake. OFAN OFAN (Oneonta Future Alumni Network) members are a select group of student ambassadors who support the mission of the Alumni Association by planning and implementing programs and special events. OFAN members consider themselves the bridge between current students and alumni and help to create a stronger sense of school identity. OFAN current students and OFAN alumni have also joined the Alumni Association Board of Directors. SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association 7

8 OVER 600 STUDENTS ATTENDED COUNTDOWN TO COMMENCEMENT EVENTS OVER 100 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE FIRST EVER DECEMBER SENIOR PASS THROUGH THE PILLARS Countdown to Commencement Programs The Alumni Association and the Class of 2017 collaborated to celebrate the countdown to commencement through events marking 200 Days, 100 Days, 30 Days, and the week leading up to Commencement. Senior Week events included The Last Supper, Craft Your Cap, Senior Class Gift Donor Reception, Senior BBQ, and Senior Pass Through the Pillars. 8 SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association

10 Supporting Scholarship Alumni Association Scholarship The SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association is proud to support student success by annually providing $82,000 in student scholarship support. The scholarships are awarded to full-time undergraduate students who excel in the classroom and distinguish themselves as leaders. 13 Alumni Career Programs 55 ALUMNI PARTICIPATED IN CAMPUS- TO-CAREER PROGRAMS ALUMNI RETURNED TO CAMPUS TO SHARE ADVICE WITH STUDENTS Harvey Delaney Leadership Institute 2017 TEACHING FACULTY MEMBERS WHO COLLABORATED WITH ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT Campus to Careers Program: This program focuses on bringing current SUNY Oneonta students from the campus to the alumni. Alumni who are accomplished in their fields are invited to host students at their place of business where career insights, networking tips and strategies, and real world advice is shared. Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series The SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association invites alumni back to campus as a part of this series, which allows alumni to give back to their alma mater by sharing practical advice with current students. Red Dragon Networking Nights Networking events across all disciplines are held on campus. Alumni return for panel discussions, meeting, and mingling with students as well as larger scale events where students have the opportunity to gather advice and wisdom from successful alumni. 15 The brothers of Iota Tau Kappa (ITK) reunite during Reunion Weekend AFFINITY GROUPS ENGAGED WITH THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 631 ALUMNI & FRIENDS ATTENDED REUNION WEEKEND 2016 Reunion Weekend The Alumni Association hosted more than 630 alumni and their families during Reunion Weekend. Classes celebrating milestone reunions (ending with 2 and 7 ) and affinity groups Iota Tau Kappa, Mask & Hammer, and Mountain Biking Club returned to SUNY Oneonta to tour the updated campus and reminisce about their time as students. Affinity Programs The Alumni Association engaged with 23 different affinity groups throughout the past year. These collaborations included event support, sending communications to their alumni, and providing supplies and giveaways for their events. The Alumni of Distinction honor recognizes just a few of the thousands of alumni who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of excellence at the college. 18 3 Year Strategic Plan The SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association created a three-year strategic plan, beginning in July 2015, aimed to strengthen our mission and vision. Four strategic areas were identified to form the basis of this plan: Goal #1: Goal #2: Goal #3: Create opportunities for alumni and students to be recognized in the college community to promote the value of an education at SUNY Oneonta. Promote community amongst alumni, students, faculty, and staff. Build the community of SUNY Oneonta through active and meaningful engagement with alumni and students. Goal #4: Leverage the experience, support, and dedication of all alumni to benefit the Association and the College. 18 SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association

There s even an app for your iphone or Android smartphone so you can save money on the go. Alumni Insurance Program The Alumni Insurance Program offers a wide variety of insurance plans and financial services. Credentials Folder A credentials folder contains material that supports your application for jobs and admission to graduate school and includes letters of recommendation and other appropriate items. The contents of the folder are maintained by the Career Development Center and forwarded to potential employers or graduate schools after a candidate s request. Request a Transcript The Registrar s Office provides transcripts to all students who have taken coursework at SUNY Oneonta. All financial obligations to the College must be cleared prior to the release of an official transcript.
