3 GREETINGS, UC ALUMNI. WELCOME TO YOUR RE-ORIENTATION. Millennial. Gen-Xer. Boomer. Whatever the label, here at University College, you are all alumni. Whether you attended Orientation Week in 2010 with an ipad, or in 1978 with pen and paper, you left with the tools to get you where you wanted to go. Today, we have a few new tools in the kit to introduce to you. From UC s social media sites to our award-winning magazine and revamped website, these tools will help you make the most of your alumni experience. 2

Here are a few upcoming highlights. 5 UC BOOK CLUB November 20, 7:00-8:30 The Imperfectionists Tom Rachman Discover books by UC and U of T authors no essay required. 7 DOG DAYS OF UC Dog Days of Winter: January 18, 2015 Dog Days of Summer: June 21, 2015 UC puts on the dog for a day in winter and summer, turning the Quad into an off-leash dog park. Grab your canine companion and meet dog-loving alumni in your neighbourhood. Prizes, giveaways, and treats for everyone! UC ALUMNI OF INFLUENCE AWARDS November 6, 2014 Join students, graduates, and faculty for a gala evening celebrating some of UC s most distinguished graduates. 8 PUBLIC LECTURES Our annual ED Talks by renowned academics will stimulate your mind and keep you thinking. Topics run the gamut from math to Plath, with no quiz to follow. Bring along your little Harry or Hermione for an evening of charm and wizardry. Tricks, treats, and prizes for best costumes! UNIVERSITY COLLEGE BOOK SALE October 17 to 22, 2014 There s no time like October to stock up on books to get you through the long winter months. Our annual Book Sale is your source for gently-used, hard-to-fi nd books at bargain prices. Proceeds benefi t the UC Library. SPRING REUNION May 28 to 30, 2015 Don t miss the UC Open House in the Alumni Lounge as part of campus-wide reunion festivities. 11 NOMINATE A CLASSMATE FOR THE UC ALUMNI OF INFLUENCE AWARD Help us to honour an inspiring UC graduate whose accomplishments have earned respect locally, nationally, and beyond. Nomination Deadline: Thursday, April 2, SERVE ON A COLLEGE COMMITTEE UC is always looking for alumni to serve on governance boards and committees. College of Electors Members elect the Chancellor and alumni members of the University of Toronto s Governing Council. Meetings take place five times per year on average. Appointments are up to three years. University College Council The governing body of University College meets quarterly to preside over administrative, budgetary, and academic matters. Chaired by the Principal, the Council is composed of approximately 40 UC faculty, staff, students, and alumni. UC Alumni of Influence Committee Responsible for selecting recipients of the UC Alumni of Influence awards, this committee of eight UC faculty and alumni meets three times each April and attends the UC Alumni of Influence Awards gala and dinner in November. 10

Students are paired one-on-one with alumni mentors working in their field of interest. Visit uc.utoronto.ca/ mentorship for more information or to sign up as a mentor. DONATE TO THE UC BOOK SALE We accept used items in good condition books, DVDs, CDs, videos, and games on weekdays at our Book Shop in University College, Room A101 near the southwest corner of the quadrangle. Closed on weekends (5:00 p.m. Friday 8:00 p.m. Monday). VOLUNTEER FOR THE UC BOOK SALE Help us pick up donations, sort and price books, prep for the autumn sale, staff the Book Shop, run the internet store at uc.utoronto.ca/shoponline, or operate the fall sale and special sales during the year. To succeed in today s complex world, our students require an education that encourages open inquiry and creative thinking. They need classrooms and study spaces that support today s technologies and methods of learning. 15 UC embodies the values of higher learning, openness, diversity, and inclusivity. To support this restoration project would be to support those core values. Leo Chen, President, UC Literary & Athletic Society, UC BUILDING RESTORATION When UC first opened its doors to students in 1859, classrooms and study spaces were lit by kerosene lamp and heated by coal-burning fireplace. Today s classrooms are equipped with e-podiums and smart screens to teach students using laptops and ipads. If you take a walk through UC today, it s easy to see that updates are necessary to improve functionality and accessibility, and to meet current technological standards. Photo: Christopher Dew 14

16 UC Library: Clark Reading Room The West Hall s heritage decor will provide an inspiring backdrop for individual and group study areas featuring work stations with personal lighting and power sources all made possible thanks to a generous $2.5 million donation from UC alumni Ed and Fran Clark (BA 69). 15 UC Library: Collections Room To honour and breathe life into the original design, our plan returns the Collections Room to its earliest location in the East Hall and also adds a gallery level with alcoves to increase collection and study space.

17 Conference Centre at Croft Chapter House Dedicated to open inquiry, the Conference Centre will be a flexible, fullservice facility with modern lighting and AV equipment. UC Quadrangle This oasis at the centre of UC and Toronto s downtown core has not seen major improvements in nearly fifty years. Our revitalization plan calls for new plantings, benches, lighting, and walkways to keep the Quad a vibrant, green urban space. Accessibility Our plan calls for additional ramps and accessible points of entry for students with mobility challenges. A central elevator, enhanced lighting, and way-finding signage will make navigation easier for everyone.
