1 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HIGHWAY ENGINEERS, DELAWARE VALLEY SECTION EDITION #5 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE As we approach the end of another ASHE season, this will be our final newsletter of the year. It has been a pleasure serving as President and I look forward to staying involved with the Section. I will also be joining the National Board after being inducted at the National Conference in June, where I hope to share all of the great things we are doing here in the Delaware Valley with the rest of the ASHE organization. As I reflect back on the year, the biggest thing that stands out for me is the level of participation that we have seen at our membership meetings. It started with the 50 th Anniversary Celebration in September, where we had close to 300 attendees, including 30 Past Presidents and eight Life Members. The great turnout continued throughout the season for the dinner meetings and Technical Sessions. In addition to the increased attendance, it has been great to see so many new faces, particularly from our younger members. I attribute much of this success to the work that our Young Members Committee has been doing to engage the next generation of members. I also want to thank our Board members for the work that they do to keep the organization running so smoothly. There is a lot of effort that goes on behind the scenes to make things happen. We have 20 different committees that are chaired primarily by Board members, but you do not have to be on the Board to participate. The full list of committees is provided on page 3 of this newsletter. Over the next several months our incoming President, Jack Mitchell, will be assigning committee members for next year. If you are interested in getting involved in one of the committees, please contact Jack or myself. We will have our final membership meeting of the year on April 19, where we will announce our Project of the Year winners, induct our incoming Board, and hear from the Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year, John Nawn. The ASHE/ PennDOT District 6-0 Workshop will be held on May 24 from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the District office. Registration information will follow shortly. You should have also received notification about the Golf Outing on June 12 at the Chester Valley Golf Club. Thank you again for your support of the organization and I look forward to seeing everyone on April 19 at our next meeting. 4 DVSP PROGRAM SPONSORSHIP Our Section started the Delaware Valley Section Patron (DVSP) Program in the season to allow supporting firms to be recognized. We are proud to note that 33 firms have committed for this season, and three additional sponsors have already signed on for next season (a new record!). Logos of all these firms are provided on page 5. DVSP benefits ($200 for the season) Logo and Hotlink on Section Website (delvalley.ashe.pro) Logo in THE TRANSPORTATION TIMES Many thanks to those of you who made this commitment this Season and helped support our Section. As you may be aware, the proceeds of the DVSP go directly to support our Section s Scholarship Fund. For a $200 fee for the season, sponsoring firms are cited for their support with their logos displayed on our website and in THE TRANSPORTATION TIMES. This also provides a hot link to access the firm s website directly from ours. We will be starting the DVSP program later this Summer and will be contacting current participants to determine their interest in continuing. If you are not already a DVSP and would like to join for next season, please contact Bob Wright (information provided on page 7). We are pleased to note that five DVSP participants - AECOM, McCormick Taylor, McMahon, TPD and Urban Engineers - have been sponsors for all 12 years of the Program s existence. Thank you for your long-time support! YOUNG MEMBERS COMMITTEE HAPPENINGS Once again we would like to thank everyone who donated items as part of the Professional Clothing Drive conducted in conjunction with our January Dinner Meeting. Donations for women benefitted PA Workwear, while those for men were directed to the Community Action Development Commission Fatherhood Empowerment Program (part of the haul is shown at left). We appreciate everyone s help in weeding out your closets and wardrobe to help others in need. We will consider repeating this worthwhile effort next season. Thanks again! The next Adopt-A-Highway cleanup is scheduled for Sunday, April 9, when we will gather with our co-adopters of ASCE s Younger Member Forum on our section of Bethlehem Pike in Ambler/Fort Washington. A separate flyer will be distributed with additional information on this. We look forward to seeing you there! The usual social hour/get-together will follow to give participants a chance to relax. Our annual bowling event/evening will be held on Wednesday, May 3, at Facenda Whitaker Lanes in East Norriton. A separate flyer will be distributed with more details on this. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this always-fun event. Please watch this space and updates for more information as these and other events develop. TECHNICAL SESSION APRIL 19 - PDH S!! Our third and last Technical Session of the season will be conducted prior to our April 19 Section Meeting. The Session will be on Concrete Pavements and will be presented by John Becker of the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA). The Session will start at 4:00 PM. Participants will be able to earn 2 professional development hours (PDH s). A separate flyer will be distributed with additional information and the process for RSVP s. REMINDER - ELECTRONIC DINNER MEETING PAYMENT NOW AVAILABLE When you register to attend Section meetings, we encourage you to pay electronically with PayPal. 6 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS UPDATE As you may be aware, professional engineers, land surveyors and geologists in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, as well as most other states, are required to obtain continued professional development (CPD) credit to renew their licenses. As a reminder, renewal in Pennsylvania will come around again this September. Planning ahead, this may be a good time to assess what your PDH needs are and how you can plan to have them without having to scurry around at the last minute. Our Section s meeting program and Technical Sessions thus far this season have offered 8 PDH opportunities and more are scheduled with the April Technical Session, the PennDOT seminar in May, and the May joint meeting with PSPE Delco. (Information on these events is provided elsewhere in this edition.) We emphasize that it remains an individual s responsibility to document PDH s and have such documentation ready in case of audit. We do provide certificates of meeting attendance/completion that you can keep in your record files, and we retain all meeting sign-in sheets in our files for backup and verification of your participation, should this be needed. ASHE s requirements for PDH s include submission of a short review of information presented at the meeting, which must be completed by the attendee before he/she can receive the PDH certificate. This process was started at our October meeting. FORE! GOLF OUTING SCHEDULED! GOLF OUTING Monday June 12 Following some extensive research and coordination by our Golf Outing Committee, a venue has been selected for our 22nd Annual Golf Outing. This will be conducted at Chester Valley Country Club in Malvern on Monday, June 12, a new spot for us. The course meets all of the needs for our Section, including an ideal location, premium course quality, excellent facilities and reasonable cost. The Outing will have a shotgun start at 1:00 PM. Lunch will be provided prior to golf, with refreshments and snacks on the course during play, and a buffet dinner with a cash bar and awards following golf. The cost of the outing will be $120 per golfer. Foursomes and hole sponsorships will be available. Please watch for the separate flyer on this for specifics and registration information. We hope to see you there! JOINT MEETING WITH PSPE DELAWARE COUNTY CHAPTER Thursday, May 25 6:00 PM Villanova University Watch for the separate flyer on this event with more details and information on registration. PENNDOTSEMINAR Our Section has conducted a half-day breakfast meeting /seminar at PennDOT District 6-0 for several years and will continue the tradition this year to help our colleagues at the DOT earn some of the PDH s they may need to continue to renew their licenses and certifications. The seminar will be conducted on Wednesday, May 24. More information will be provided in a separate event flyer, including the seminar topics and registration information. TAKE A PEEK AT OUR NEW AND IMPROVED WEBSITE! As in the past there will be a limit on outside firm attendance to allow PennDOT and government agency employees to get priority for registration and participation. PDH s will be available for the sessions presented at this Seminar. Please visit delvalley.ashe.pro and see all of our Section s information you ll need to keep up-to-date on things.
