1 Welcome to East Hanover The Township of East Hanover is the Gateway to Morris County. Traveling west from Essex County, the roads lead to this suburban community that has an effective mix of residential beauty, fine industry and successful commercial enterprises. Commerce and industry make it possible for residents to enjoy a low tax rate. In fact, East Hanover s property tax rate ranks among the lowest in Morris County~2.171 per $100 of assessed property valuation for the year Incorporated in 1928, the Township of East Hanover covers an area of 8.2 square miles and is convenient to the metropolitan area and to a network of major highways. The community is adjacent to the municipalities of Parsippany-Troy Hills, Florham Park, Hanover Township (Whippany), Roseland, Livingston, and Montville. According to the 2010 census, East Hanover s population is 11,157. The public school system is excellent with two elementary schools and a middle school operated by the East Hanover Board of Education. Route 10 has become one of the finest shopping areas in New Jersey. East Hanover is also known for its cemeteries ~ Gate of Heaven, Restland Memorial Park and Heavenly Rest Memorial Park. Mount Pleasant Avenue incorporates a historical district that had been placed in the Congressional Record. The First Presbyterian Church and its adjoining graveyard date back to the Revolutionary War. Many Native American artifacts have been discovered in various parts of East Hanover. The Cook Halfway House, built in 1752 and owned by Colonel Ellis Cook, served as a halfway house and tavern for travelers going from Western New Jersey to Newark during the Revolutionary time period. The government of the Township of East Hanover is the Small Municipality Mayor and Council Form under the Faulkner Act. The Mayor and four Council members are directly elected by the voters. The Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of the Township and participates and presides over the meetings of the Township Council.
