2 New Vision Health Program Roster Set for The New Vision Health program accepted 14 students for the upcoming school year. This rigorous program has grown significantly over the years and the students are exemplary. We had 31 applications from all 8 school districts; applications were reviewed and 28 students were interviewed by a team which included an administrator, guidance counselor and teacher. All applications were carefully reviewed by the admissions team, (written application; 3 references; student essay and GPA) then applicants were interviewed to complete the process. Decisions for acceptance are based on the overall ability of the student's performance in the interview and the written application. The application process is very competitive and students are selected after much consideration. We are very excited to have so many applicants pursue the New Vision Health Program and we look forward to a very rewarding school year! 3 Cosmetology II Field Trip On March 13 th the Cosmetology II students went on a field trip to Claudia s Salon on Main Street in Liberty NY. The students performed services on all the licensed cosmetologists in the salon such as highlighting hair, putting on artificial nails, giving pedicures, facials and blow-drying/curling hair. The students were able to get hands on experience in the of operation a salon. Claudia s staff loved their treatments as well as the students. The licensed cosmetologists would like to come to BOCES to get more services and coach students at a later date. The students very much enjoyed the experience and want to go back. We have established a nice relationship with the cosmetologists at Claudia s and we will return in the future with other classes. Page 3 of 13

4 Cosmetology II Clinic December 13 th we started opening our Clinic to the public, one evening a month (2 nd Thursday) from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. We service a lot of our own BOCES staff. The students get the experience of working with the public by taking appointments, dealing with money and writing receipts. We offer haircuts, facials, waxing, artificial nails, nail art, make up, paraffins, pedicures and more to men, women and children. It has been a huge success! One evening the Clinic had as many as 21 appointments booked! Below are some photos of a nail service performed on Clinic night. Page 4 of 13

5 Cosmetology II Final Projects One of the requirements for Cosmetology students to obtain the technical endorsement seal on their diplomas is to complete an approved project of the teacher s choice. The project must be completed over a 2 year span and it incorporates integrated Math, English & Science. This year s graduating students were assigned a project consisting of designing and planning their own salons on paper, and then using their creativity and crafts such as old flooring, pipe cleaners, tooth picks, etc., build their salons. 6 Auto Tech Partnership with National Automotive Technical Educational Foundation On March 15 th Auto Tech teachers and CTE administrators met with representatives from NATEF to begin the process of program certification. The NATEF organization best explains the need for this process: The automotive service and repair industry has gone through tremendous changes in the last decade. Working on today s cars requires a deeper understanding of the technology that goes into the modern, more sophisticated automobile. This increased sophistication means schools need to stay current to properly educate students to meet industry standards. That is why accreditation for automotive programs is so important. To help educators recruit, mentor, and train tomorrow s technicians; the National Automotive Technician s Education Foundation (NATEF) offers accreditation for automotive technician training programs. By utilizing standards established by industry, NATEF examines the structure, resources and quality of training programs with the goal to improve the quality of training offered at secondary and post-secondary, public and proprietary schools. Auto Tech will begin the process with a self- review. Many other CTE centers have already gone through this certification, and they have offered help and advice to us, along with our local industry partners. We look forward to making improvements in our Auto Tech program with NATEF. Page 6 of 13

7 Culinary Arts Field Trip to The Culinary Institute of America Twenty-four Culinary I students visited The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY on Tuesday March 12, The field trip started off with an extensive tour of the campus which houses 54 production kitchens and 5 restaurants that are open to the public. The students were very impressed with America s Premiere Culinary College. Once the students were finished with the tour, they ate a delectable lunch at the Caterina D Medici Restaurant. This was the first time that many of the students ate in a formal restaurant. They demonstrated such poise that many customers stopped chaperone Linda Blanton on her way out of the restaurant to inquire where the kids were from and why they were there. Many compliments were given regarding their behavior! CTE Tours On March 6th and 7th, over 250 tenth-grade students toured both RPEC and SJS facilities. Each program provided a short, detailed presentation about the industry and job opportunities. What a great opportunity for tenth grade students to get an idea of what it would be like to spend half their day at the Career & Tech Center. Suanne Barry, School Counselor is currently organizing individual student visits for any student who would like to spend time in individual classes. Page 7 of 13

8 SkillsUSA News! As Sullivan BOCES Career & Technical Education Center has made a commitment to be a SkillsUSA Total Participation school for the school year, CTE classes were offered the opportunity from the guidance department to participate in a Yankee Candle fundraiser to raise monies which will go to each program to help with the cost of Skills Competition and Educational Field trips. The programs participating are Health Occupations I, New Vision, Public Safety, Animal Science, Precision Machining, Early Childhood and LPN HS students. The fundraiser ends 4/8/13. SkillsUSA New York Leadership Conference and Skills Championships From April 24 th through April 27th, twenty-four students and three chaperones will be in Syracuse, NY for the 2013 SkillsUSA New York Leadership Conference and Skills Championships. 10 On the horizon for Career & Technical Education Technical Assessment tests for Technical Endorsements on CTE student diplomas will begin the week of April 29 th. National Technical Honor Society Induction will be on May 23 rd at RPEC. Planning for the 2013 CTE Recognition Night at Fallsburg on June 20 th. Page 10 of 13

12 Spirit Week Student Council Reps. Becka Jean Storms, (LCS) and Ashley Morabito (ECS) of Alt. Ed. were instrumental in letting students and staff know what the theme was for each day. Additionally, Alt. Ed. students participated in the Friday activities in the gym which included basketball, cotton candy, popcorn and hula hooping. Pictured to left: Alt. Ed. staff and students dressed for Camo Day. Career & Tech Visits Several of the Alt. Ed. Students have been visiting CTE Programs that they may be interested in attending next year. Students have verbalized positive feedback with regard to the programs they have visited thus far. It is anticipated that there will be approximately 15 students from Alt. Ed will be participating in a CTE Program for the School Year. Page 12 of 13

13 On the horizon for Alternative Education... A field trip to Bethel Woods to see Othello is being coordinated by English Teacher, Fay Cerullo. A field trip to going bowling as part of the PEP GRANT is being scheduled. Plans for Alt. Ed. Graduation are being discussed. Gina Conroy s Forensics class will be working with the Auto Tech class measuring tire tracks and treads. Page 13 of 13
