2 PRESIDENT S COMMENTS President Tom Borlund Tennessee State Representative Jay Reedy was going to be our speaker for the February meeting until Winter Storm Pandora caused it to be cancelled. A cattle farmer and small business owner in Houston County, Jay entered politics to make a difference last year and won the election for the 74th District (includes part of Montgomery County) - the first Republican to do so since the Civil War. Recently his Majority Party selected him to be their Deputy Whip. Jay is a former enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army and a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserve. He is an active member of our Chapter, and we should support him with a good turnout. Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts, a Democrat representing Clarksville and the rest of Montgomery County, was invited to be our speaker for the June meeting, but he could not make that one. He will, however, be our speaker in October. Officers and Committees President: COL Tom Borlund, USA (Ret). 1st Vice President: (Programs) CAPT/O6 Barbara Braden, USPHS (Ret). 2nd Vice-President: CDR Ivan Adames, USN (Ret) Secretary: CDR Neldon Whitty USN (Ret) Treasurer: LTC Dave Marr USA (Ret) Personal Affairs & Chaplain: CPT Eddie Sumbler, USA (Ret) Auxiliary Liaison: Ms Nancy Evans Legislative: KY: Col Richard Stevenson, USAF (Ret) TN: COL Michael Taliento, USA (Ret) ROTC Liaison: LTC James Huggins, USA (Ret) Historian: 1LT Lisa R. Boyd, USA (Ret) Newsletter Editor and Webmaster: LtCol J.T. Smith, USAF (Ret) Scholarship Committee: COL Jeff Yaeger, (Chn), COL Natalie Shriver, LTC Dave Marr, & CW4 Howard French Directory Committee: CW2 Warren Evans (Chn) Recruiting Team: CW4 Howard French, MAJ Bob Posley, & Capt Eldon Pontius Joe Pitts and Jay Reedy work well with State Senator Mark Green on legislation affecting the military and veterans issues, and we will learn a lot from both of them. To complete our legislator lineup for non-election year 2015, the two Congressmen for Fort Campbell will be our summer speakers: Marsha Blackburn for Tennessee in July and Ed Whitfield for Kentucky in August. Three months ago in these comments we asked for short biographies (200 to 500 words in length) with photos in an effort to get to know one another better. To date we have five biographies completed to serve as examples. They will be posted in a special, restricted-access section of the Chapter web site [access details will be provided soon under 'This Just In' in the web site News section]. I urge each of you to review the examples and then add your bio-sketch as soon as possible. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The committee met at noon at Cole Park Commons on Friday, 24 April. Recruiting, attrition, JROTC award ceremonies and possibly expanding the number JROTC and ROTC units being sponsored in western KY were discussed at length. MOAA has changed the term Auxiliary Members to Surviving Spouses which requires a change to the Chapter constitution and by-laws. The upcoming 2015 programs for monthly meetings was another major topic of discussion. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS We are pleased to welcome these new members to our Chapter: COL Joseph G. Kaufmann, USA (Ret) COL Kenny Kendrick, USA (Ret) MAJ Keith Haas, USA (Ret) CPT Donald Cain, III, USA $250 Club: Help Us Endow Another National MOAA Scholarship Important: These National Scholarships go to Local Recipients! 3 GENERAL FUND TREASURER S REPORT Forty-seven members and guests assembled at the Montgomery County Public Library on 18 April. As usual, Margie Crain provided a great meal. LTC Lawrence Herzog and CW4 Howard French reported on their experiences while 'Storming The Hill' earlier in the month. In general, they were well received, and they learned that our Senators and Representatives understand and are sympathetic to MOAA's positions on the issues. They made the point, however, that we are there once a year, but the special-interest lobbyists are there every day. Political and fiscal realities dominate. CREDIT UNION ACCOUNT BALANCES as of May 1, 2015 Shares $ General Fund 3, Scholarship Fund 11, $250 Club Fund 4, Total $ 19, Note: 2015 Chapter Dues are now payable. Remit to Dave Marr if you have not paid. WEB SITE UPDATE For some time, MOAA's Weekly Legislative Updates have been posted to the News section. Now MOAA's Spouse E-News releases are also posted there. The number of reservations and regrets via the web-site form and direct has improved, but too many phone calls are still needed each month. Thanks to all who use the web-site form. It really, really helps. The Next Ladies' Luncheon Will be on Friday, 8 May, at 11:30 The 2 Kates Restaurant, 10 Public Square, Elkton, KY GPS: ' N ' W Directions: Gather at the Sears Store parking lot in the corner nearest Wilma Rudolph Blvd and I-24, Exit 4 at 10:45 to carpool to Elkton. 4 COMMUNITY SUPPORT ACTIVITIES On 27 March 2015, the Executive Committee voted to donate the Chapter's seldom-used charcoal grill to the Fort Campbell Fisher House. Our thanks to CW2 Warren Evans who transported the grill to the Fisher House and made the presentation on 21 April. In the photo are Wendy Carlston, Manager of the Fort Campbell Fisher House, and CW2 Warren Evans. The Chapter Teams With AUSA to Welcome Troops Home On Tuesday, 14 April 2015, the Chapter sponsored and participated in the welcome-home event held in Hangar 3 at Fort Campbell Army Airfield. Two flights were scheduled to arrive during the afternoon, but we were in place at 1100 to provide snacks and beverages to family members as they arrived to wait for their soldiers--from the 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, and 86th Combat Support Hospital-- who were returning from their fine work in Africa to help contain the spread of the Ebola virus.
