October Program Army Recruiting in Michigan LTC Charles J. Cogger, USA Commander, Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Charles J. Cogger will speak about the current needs of the Army and ways that the Capitol Ma Area Chapter can help raise awareness within our communities. The Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion is organized into seven recruiting companies encompassing approximately 54,000 square miles. They cover 70 counties in the state of Michigan and cover the entire state less the Upper Peninsula. The battalion touches four of the five Great Lakes Michigan, Huron, Superior, And Erie as well as Lake St. Clair, which is sometimes referred to as the sixth Great Lake." It is this geography which gave rise to the title Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion. The US Army, rather USAREC will speak at our October meeting. It has been customary for the Recruiting Battalion to call this a COI (Center Of Influence) event, presenting a 25 minute update and explanation of current recruiting programs and how MOAA members can help recruiting efforts. It also continues that the sit down meal is compliments of the US Army. So the first 40 MOAA members that sign up will be provided the meal. The Army will not pay for no-shows or meals not eaten.

4 October Speaker Bio Lieutenant Colonel Charles J. Cogger Lieutenant Colonel Charles J. Cogger, a native of Bloomington, Minnesota was commissioned in Field Artillery (FA) Officer through the University of Minnesota ROTC in 1997, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. His initial assignment was in the 2d Infantry Division, Korea where he served as a Fire Direction Officer and Platoon Leader. Next to the 82d Airborne Division and a variety of Company level FA jobs. After Captain Career Course and Combined Arms Staff Service School, LTC Cogger was assigned to the 1st Armored DIVARTY, Baumholder, Germany as an Operations Officer. While deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) 1-1.5, LTC Cogger served as the DIVARTY S5 (Civil Military Operations Officer) and Assistant S3 for 4-27 FA. He later commanded B/4-27 FA and deployed Baghdad during OIF Following the completion of the Command and General Staff College, LTC Cogger returned to the 82d Airborne Division, deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) Later to JRTC and Fort Polk before being assigned as the Battalion Commander for the Army and Army Reserve and Officer Programs for the State of Michigan. LTC Cogger also earned his International Masters of Business Administration in Global Supply Chain and Operations Management from U of SC. The techniques of persuasion that helped to shape the modern world were developed for and during the Great War ( ). In the United States, posters, cartoons, songs, and other popular culture were designed to mobilize the entire home front, to make every adult and child feel intimately involved with the war effort. At the same time, Liberty Loan campaigns, military parades, and other activities to support the troops as they trained and fought featured all aspects of military life, from the doughboy s field kit to hard-won battlefield trophies brought back in victory. Paradoxically, during this First World War War and Speech: Propaganda and Patriotism in the Great War explores, through the MSU Museum s extensive to defend ideals of democracy and freedom, state surveillance and restrictions on dissent increased. These powerful images of persuasion simultaneously extended a promise of inclusion to all Americans in the life of the nation, even as women, African Americans, Native Americans, and others struggled for long-denied civil and political rights. Propaganda posters produced by the United States government, by commercial lithographers, and by average citizens created a new, modern way of signifying patriotism and the American people. "War and Speech" provides a window to that moment, framing Americans' ideas about nation and citizenship in this critical historic era.
