3 SCCA President s Welcome Fall Season Greetings and Blessings! SCCA is excited about Your Involvement this Year! I hope this SCCA President s Welcome finds you well in the midst of all the changes, challenges, and choices prevalent throughout the world today. It s been 15 years since I had the privilege serving as SCCA President for One of my all-time favorite songwriters Bob Dylan resonates Come gather round people wherever you roam... for The Times They Are A Changin. I am humbled and honored to serve again as your SCCA President. My faith is strong. I try living life daily hoping to glorify God in all I do. I am a well-seasoned family man devoted to my beautiful wife and our five amazing kids (ages 13-23). I have a passion for praising and drumming. Aspirations include making a positive impact in other people s lives. I have been blessed to reside and practice as a professional counselor assuming various titles and roles as either a professional elementary or secondary school counselor, college counselor, college/university professor, counselor educator or supervisor, and licensed psychologist (private practice and inpatient psychiatric hospitals) in the states of PA, OH, MN, LA, CA, and SC. I have been an ACA member for over 42 years and a member of SCCA for the past 20+ years. I gave my first ACA national conference (1977) presentation in Dallas, TX when Dr. Carl R. Rogers was the keynote speaker. I am excited to do my best serving as our SCCA President. We need YOU to become actively involved as a member of SCCA for all of us to ameliorate the profession of counseling in our beautiful state of South Carolina, throughout the nation, and beyond. Do not what SCCA can do for you, but rather what YOU can do for SCCA this year! (Sound familiar?... hint JFK) I encourage you to become an active, contributing member of one of the several SCCA committees or get involved with one of the existing five SCCA State Divisions of the national ACES, AMCD, ASCA, ASGW, and NCDA. You may even be so BOLD to become a foundational leader to develop another SCCA division among 15 other existing national ACA affiliated divisions! This November we had a productive SCCA Council (Board) meeting. We for the first time had a quorum permitting us to conduct our official business to move forward and energized for this year. Much honesty, reflection, and foresight was contributed by 17 of our SCCA leaders for advancing our professional association as a State Branch of ACA. A budget for was adopted and Council leadership positions for this year were finalized... YEAH! Words by our Immediate Past President Dr. John Nance resound in me, Stepping into the [new] President s role with the SCCA, I follow an important legacy of leadership, tradition, and wisdom within our state. I also recognize the value of bridging multiple generations of professional counselors, including some seasoned with wisdom, some who are tech savvy, and all from a wide range of identities, focus, in a wide variety of settings (online, school, community, hospital, governmental, private practice) within South Carolina, adjoining states, and globally.
4 Representing SCCA at the recent July 2017 ACA Institute Leadership Training (ILT) in Washington, D.C. was an inspiring, eye opening professional leadership experience. Extraordinary benefits included a lot of valuable learning including: social, political, legislative processes, skills for interacting with Congressional leaders when advocating for our counseling profession, the impact and power of our Southern ACA Branch, how to manage our digital footprint as a State Branch of ACA, and the finances of leadership. This was the ninth consecutive year of this event and included ACA affiliated leaders representing all US states and several other countries. A highlight of ILT included serving as a constituent for ACA explaining two federal professional counselor legislative bills to our South Carolina Congressional leader staff offices for Senators Tim Scott and Lindsay Graham and the House of Representatives office for Mark Stanford. The two bills included support for funding supportive services of Professional School Counselors and providing Medicare financial coverage for master s degree Licensed Professional Counselors. Plans are well underway for our 54 th Annual 2018 SCCA Conference at the Westin Hilton Island Resort and Spa with the theme: Beacons of Light Empowering Resilience in a Changing World Thursday, February 22nd Saturday, February 24 th. In addition to the wide range of professional development break-out session tracks (Clinical Mental Health, School Counseling, Ethics, Trauma, and Supervision) there will be pre and post-conference workshops for earning Continuing Education Clock Hours. Mr. Christan Rainey, CEO of M.A.D.D. (Men Against Domestic Violence) is scheduled to share his personal story while delivering a very powerful, unimaginable presentation, Domestic Violence: The Loudest Serial Killer Never Heard during the SCCA Conference Saturday morning Presidential Breakfast and Business Meeting. Details are being finalized by our SCCA Exhibit Chair Toni Wooldridge. Additional exhibitor opportunities will be extended for the Virtual Exhibit Hall this year. Please be sure to register ASAP ( ) if you ve not already registered for a hotel room at our conference. The rooms will fill up quickly thanks to the SCCA cost reduction conference rate. We are always looking and welcoming volunteers to assist before, during, and after our Annual Conference. During our November SCCA Council meeting President-Elect Dr. Tommy Vaughn highlighted 10 suggested changes to revise, refine, and strengthen our current SCCA Bylaws. He has solicited input for getting back to him by December 15th to compile these notes in order for the SCCA Executive Committee to meet before the whole SCCA Executive Council meets next on January 6, Dr. Vaughn acknowledged his suggested changes are by no means the all-encompassing words, nor final idea but rather presented as a matter of information to begin a dialogue... to produce a well-refined set of Bylaws I concur with Dr. Vaughn s optimism that we can finalize a revision in time to present the suggested changes to the whole SCCA membership at our Annual Conference meeting in February 2018, then vote afterwards for an elected board if that is the route we go. I believe this is a realistic goat for us to achieve in the coming weeks. This process of dialogue and refinement of our Bylaws is essential. Please read our Bylaws and let us hear from you. We value and respect your input. It s going to be a great year for SCCA. Let s make this a banner year. Thank you and God bless! Sincerely, George Williams President of SCCA Past President of SCCA
