1 JROTC LEADERSHIP EDUCATION Class: JRO-100/102 (LE-1/2) Instructors: Maj Kintzley: (970) MGySgt Pickering: (970) COURSE DESCRIPTION The Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (MCJROTC) program is designed to instill in high school students a value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. It prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community, and nation. Develop leadership and build character. Create informed, patriotic, and responsible citizens. Develop responsible young adults who are physically, mentally, and morally fit. Develop informed and civic-minded young adults prepared for higher education, civilian careers, and public service. Instill discipline, respect, and responsibility through military-related subjects and activities. Homework is assigned as required based on the student's mastery of the objectives in each lesson as determined by informal formative assessments. Communication of Assignments Students are expected to copy homework assignments into their agenda daily. All instructors will communicate homework assignments to parents via the student. GRADING SCALE A B C D F 59 & Below MARKING PERIOD GRADE CALCULATION Cadets will be evaluated in the following areas: Leadership/Followership: Daily Quizzes/Projects: Weekly Physical Fitness: Weekly Uniform/Personnel Inspections: Weekly Final Examination/Evaluation: End of Semester NOTE: Failure to wear the MCJROTC uniform on a required uniform day will result in a 0 for that week s Uniform/Personnel Inspection grade as well as a 0 for the week s Leadership/Followership grade. LE-1 Cadets: 3 missed uniform days will constitute failure in the course. LE-2 Cadets: 1 missed uniform day will constitute failure in the course.

3 COURSE / PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & PARTICIPATION The following are requirements for membership in the MCJROTC program: Limited to students who maintain acceptable standards of academic achievement, conduct and grooming as prescribed by governing directives. Students are required to wear the JROTC uniform as designated by the SMI at least once per week and conform to pertinent grooming regulations and behavioral standards while in uniform. PROMOTIONS Cadets will earn promotions in the MCJROTC program based on individual leadership & merit. Promotions enable Cadets to understand that with increased authority comes greater responsibility. CLASS DISCIPLINE POLICY Students enrolled in Leadership Education classes (JROTC) are expected to hold themselves and their classmates accountable for their actions. When a student chooses not to abide by classroom and/or school policies, his/her fellow students are expected to correct the behavior in a tactful & respectful manner, either verbally or using appropriate hand gestures. If self- and peer-accountability is not effective, the following procedures will be used: Student is counseled by the SMI/MI. 2nd time, student escorted to office/hallway and talked to by the SMI/MI. At this step, the student s Leadership/Followership grade will be adversely affected. 3rd/4th time, (or if so disruptive), student sent to assistant principal with a note of why he/she is being sent. SMI will also call home to discuss the matter with parents/guardians. Continued disruption or refusal to conform to set standards may result in disenrollment from the MCJROTC program. ATTENDANCE POLICY The majority of this course is Performance Based. Therefore, students (Cadets) must be present in order to be adequately evaluated. Unexcused absences & unexcused tardies will adversely affect an individual s grade. Unexcused absences on Uniform and PT days will result in the Cadet receiving failing grades for that event, in addition to adversely affecting their Leadership / Followership grade. Missed uniform days due to absence must be made up within two (2) school days of the missed uniform day for credit. Pursuant to Northridge / District 6 policy, the following will be enforced: At 4 and 8 absences from this class, we will call home/ parents. After the 7 th day of absences, a letter will be printed from IC and will be sent home/ ed. After the 10 th day of absences, an administrator will contact parents and student for an attendance meeting. After 40 blocks of absences: Referral to Truancy Court. The district will be notified as per truancy law, and the student may be referred to truancy court. LATE WORK POLICY Making up work is the responsibility of the student. The student, immediately upon his/her return from an absence, must check with his/her teachers for make-up work that may be due. The teacher, in consultation with the student, will establish deadlines for make-up work. In cases of extended illnesses where assignments are being sent home or to a hospital through the student s academic advisor or teacher, the student and teacher will agree upon the length of time allowed for make-up work. ELECTRONICS POLICY Other than a laptop computer (used for taking notes), electronic devices are not authorized for use in the classroom. All devices will be silenced or turned off, and stowed in a pocket, bag, or backpack. Students caught utilizing electronics during class will be deducted points from his/her Leadership/Followership grade. The device will also be retained by the SMI/MI until the end of the class period, upon which time it will be returned to the student. Repeat occurrences will result in devices being turned over to the school principal for a parents or guardians to pick up.

4 DISENROLLMENT POLICY The SMI may disenroll a cadet from the MCJROTC unit for any of the following reasons: Failure to maintain standards of enrollment. Lack of aptitude, indifference to training, disciplinary infractions, or undesirable traits of character. Disenrollment from school. Request of the individual cadet. If, in the opinion of the SMI, the cadet would suffer undue hardship by remaining in the unit for any reason, then disenrollment is authorized. Found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony. MCJROTC UNIFORMS Uniform items and equipment are the PROPERTY OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT and are issued to cadets on a loan basis. They are not given to students to keep! Any uniform lost, stolen or misplaced will require parents/guardians to purchase/replace the item. Legitimately damaged, destroyed, or worn out uniforms may be replaced at no cost at the discretion and approval of the Senior Marine Instructor. Upon notification of disenrollment, ALL UNIFORM ITEMS (UTILITY, DRESS, PT, ETC.) AND EQUIPMENT SIGNED OUT BY THE DISENROLLING CADET MUST BE RETURNED TO THE SMI/MI. SCHOOL FINES OR OTHER FORMAL LEGAL ACTION MAY BE USED TO RECOVER THE GOVERNMENT S PROPERTY SHOULD CADETS FAIL TO RETURN THEM UPON LEAVING MCJROTC.

6 MCJROTC UNIFORM PLEDGE I am a Marine JROTC cadet enrolled in Northridge High School, Marine Corps Junior ROTC. When I put on my cadet uniform, I will wear it with the same pride and dignity as the Marines it represents. I acknowledge my uniform is the same as those worn by Marines, past and present, who worked extremely hard to receive the Eagle, Globe and Anchor as a symbol of their honor, courage and commitment. I understand the many sacrifices Marines have made in their long and illustrious history, including giving their lives for their country, the United States of America. I know these Marines expect me, a JROTC cadet with a loaned uniform, to show respect to those who earned wearing the uniform of a United States Marine. I promise I will humbly and respectfully wear a complete uniform correctly to honor those who wear it in the defense of our country. I make this commitment to honor the uniform of United States Marines and I will well and faithfully conduct myself with honor, dignity and respect at all times while wearing my uniform. By my signature below, I accept complete responsibility for wearing the Marine Corps JROTC uniform as instructed and outlined herein. As a first year cadet, should I fail to wear my uniform 3 times in a semester; the SMI has the option to drop me from the program. 7 Memorandum of Agreement for Participation in MCJROTC 1. Students are required to participate in progressive physical training (PT) which includes instruction on health, wellness, nutrition as well as warmup, stretching, exercise and physically challenging activities. Students are required to dress out in their PT uniform and to participate in all PT activities. INIT. 2. Cadets are required to wear their MCJROTC uniform one full day to all classes (designated Uniform Day). During their MCJROTC class they are inspected by senior cadets and/or MCJROTC instructors for neatness and compliance with regulations. They are inspected for hygiene and MCJROTC knowledge and given a grade for this event. Except for traveling to/from school on Uniform Day and off campus MCJROTC events, cadets are not allowed to wear any MCJROTC uniform, in part or whole, at any other time while off campus. INIT. 3. Male cadets are required to have neatly trimmed and tapered haircuts. Female cadets hair length may be any length as long as it does not exceed the lower edge of the uniform shirt collar or can be put up (instruction is given). Hair color must be a natural color and hair dying other than natural colors is not acceptable. Body piercing jewelry is not allowed while wearing uniforms. Females may wear conservative earrings after given instruction on the acceptable types. Smoking in uniform is strictly prohibited and discouraged at other times. INIT. 4. As cadets represent the entire MCJROTC Program on and off campus, they are expected to conduct themselves in a manner as good citizens and students. The reflection of one cadet s misbehavior or misconduct can damage the reputation of the entire program and impair our ability to gain local school and community support. INIT. 5. As our curriculum emphasizes leadership, citizenship and scholarship, we expect cadets to abide by the rules established by Weld County School District 6 as well as those regulations we teach in MCJROTC. We accept honest mistakes, but expect Cadets behavior in school and all classes to be exemplary. Other teachers know our expectations and support us as well. INIT. 6. Uniforms and equipment are issued to cadets on a loan basis. That means we want these items back when the student leaves the program. They are not given to students to keep! All uniform items are US government property, not school property and are accountable to the U.S. Marine Corps. School fines or other formal legal action may be used to recover our property, should cadets fail to return them upon leaving MCJROTC. INIT. 7. Any uniform lost, stolen or misplaced will require the parents to purchase/replace the item. Legitimately damaged, destroyed, or worn out uniforms may be replaced at no cost at the discretion and approval of the Senior Marine Instructor. INIT. 8. Cadets will be given opportunities to perform community service throughout the year. It should be noted we depend on cadets to keep their obligations when they sign up for activities. When cadets fail to show, it requires us to find a replacement at the last minute or go shorthanded; it is unfair to others who may have wanted to participate but, were unable to, due to the sign up list being full. INIT. 9. As we perform many activities each year, we must ask the cooperation of cadets and parents to assist us getting cadets to events. We solicit and encourage parent support and assistance, and only though this support ware we able to do all the things we want and need to do. INIT. 10. We perform numerous fundraising activities year round in order to support all the activities we do. All cadets are required to do their fair share. Funds help pay for cadet activities, parties, local trips, and scholarships. Every penny raised goes back to cadets in one form or another. INIT. 11. Students enrolled in MCJROTC must be fully physically qualified to participate in our physical training activities; waivers are granted on a case-by-case basis by the instructor. We push the students to perform to their abilities. Cadets with disabling physical handicaps may be unable to meet MCJROTC physical requirements and may be unable take the youth physical fitness tests, but will still receive a grade based on effort and attitude. Doctors notes with specific limitations and assessed recovery periods are required to temporarily excuse cadets form physical activities. INIT. 12. Cadets going on field trips will be required to return a field trip permission slip to the MCJROTC instructors signed by parents or legal guardians that will include a completed Verification of Health Insurance Form listing Health Care Provider/Company, Policy#, Address and Phone Number. We will send permission slips home for each event. INIT. 13. Our Program is structured around leadership training. This requires us to place cadets in positions of authority commensurate with their abilities/skills/knowledge. New cadets must understand the need for their willingness to learn as followers before they can become leaders in this Program. Willing and immediate obedience to lawful orders from senior cadets or MCJROTC Instructors is expected by all. INIT. We also acknowledge that during our child s enrollment, he/she may participate in demonstrations and exercises that may include, but may not be limited to, the following: 1. Marksmanship training with the.177 caliber air rifle for the purpose of operations and safety procedures. 2. Conditioning & endurance runs, hikes and land navigation exercises. 3. Obstacle and confidence courses which may include obstacles of height of up to 25 feet which must be scaled. 4. Rappelling from fixed towers and cliffs. 5. Transportation of participants by means of cars, trucks, vans, buses, or approved military vehicles. 6. Observation and hands-on familiarity with military equipment, to include static displays of tanks, aircraft, logistic support equipment and other large scale, non-operating pieces of military equipment. 7. Observation of live ammunition firing exercises of weapons, to include small arms, tanks, artillery, and aircraft, both during day and night hours. 8. Overnight bivouacking (camping outdoors overnight). It is our understanding that all such demonstrations and exercises, or those demonstrations and exercises of a related nature, will take place under the supervision and direction of the MCJROTC Instructors or qualified adults familiar with safe operation of the above named devices. It is our understanding that all exercises and demonstrations will be conducted according to normal and standard operating procedures in effect in the Marine Corps. Nevertheless, we acknowledge that the normal and safe operation of the above named devices and exercises may involve inherent hazards and risk, and we agree to hold the sponsors, Marine Corps, and supervising individuals harmless and not liable for any injury or damage, either personal or that involving personal property, which may result from participation in the above named events. We further agree that neither the sponsors, Marine Corps nor supervising personnel shall be liable for any injury or damage to person or property resulting from accidents involving the above named or related equipment, or the above or related demonstrations and exercises where such damage or injury is the result of mechanical breakdown or fatigue. It is our understanding that the sponsors and the Marine Corps will be responsible for normal maintenance and safe operation of all equipment within the guidelines and parameters of standard Marine Corps operating procedures. Furthermore, we agree to assume responsibility for any act of misconduct or negligence committed by our child in connection with this orientation visit which may result in damage, destruction, or harm to any property or injury or death to any person or persons.
