3 Mobile App Upgrade Provides Additional Services to Ohio Veterans The Ohio Department of Veterans Services is expanding its use of the latest technology to communicate with veterans by launching an upgraded mobile app to bring more job and education information to those who ve served. We re making use of all the tools in the toolbox to reach out to Ohio veterans, Ohio Department of Veterans Services Director Tim Gorrell said. The app has been a great success so far, and the upgrades we ve added make it even more useful as a means to find out about benefits and how to get them. The app upgrade, officially Version 1.3.0, expands availability of the app to Windows device users. It includes additional resources to veterans looking for work, assistance to student veterans, and news of interest to the veteran community. These resources are added under both existing and new navigational buttons. Specifically, the app Under the current Jobs button, adds an Ohio One Stop Centers (for Ohio Means Jobs) search page that enables the office locations to be found by current location, zip code or county, and provides contact, map and directional information. Also under the Jobs button, adds a list of Small Business Development Centers by city for veterans wishing to start their own business; the list also includes contact, map and directional information. Under the current Education button, adds a list of Student Vet Centers in Ohio Public Colleges and Universities that includes contact and directional information. Adds a button for the Ohio Department of Veterans Services Advisory Committee that contains contact information for the veterans organizations and affiliated organizations that make up the committee. Adds a button that contains current news releases issued by the Ohio Department of Veterans Services. Under the existing About button, adds icons and links to the department s social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube). The department s mobile app was launched in November It provides an overview of the principal federal and state benefits available to veterans and how to apply for them. One of the app s most important capabilities is the location on every page of an In Crisis button, which provides vital information to veterans and family members in difficult circumstances. This button provides direct access to a toll-free, 24/7 hotline or a web site with a live chat feature, operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), where veterans can communicate directly with a counselor. The app also enables a user to find each of Ohio s 88 county veteran service offices by current location, zip code or county. In addition, it provides contact, map and directional information for each office and for VA facilities in the state. Currently, the app has over 6,500 users. Simply put, the mobile app puts veterans benefits in the palm of the hand, Director Gorrell said. More veterans are downloading it every month and taking advantage of what it offers. It s a great way to connect that we anticipate is only going to get bigger. The app is available, at no cost, from the Windows, Google Play and itunes stores, by searching the key words Ohio veteran. The department s web site, contains a link to the stores. The app is compatible with Windows, Android and ios devices. In addition, the app is also available as a mobile web site at: For those Scarred by Life and by War Sound familiar: my friends and family don t understand me: I often turn to unhealthy activities to mask my pain; I am impatient and frustrated and find myself isolating; etc? These are valid complaints of many ex-military men and women. There are answers to those very real problems. Those answers can be explored at the Coming Home retreat for military veterans. The retreat will be held at Spiritual Center, 5361 S. Milford Rd., Milford, OH on the weekend of October 3-5, You can expect a safe, Secure environment, being with others who get it and new insights and understandings of your own unique experiences. The weekend is free. However, to assure attendance, a refundable $25 registration fee must be received by credit card or check along with the registration form. That form is available from ministries or by calling (630)

4 AUXILIARY CORNER Caregiving: Part 1 Patricia Bergquist, chair, Auxiliary Member Advisory Committee The Family Caregiver Alliance says 44 million family members and friends provide unpaid support to another person, which accounts for nearly 80 percent of all long-term care in the U.S. Even closer to home, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation reports 5.5 million family members and friends provide $15 billion worth of support a year to our nation s servicemembers who return home with visible and invisible injuries and disabilities, some of which will last for a lifetime. Many caregivers who work end up losing time, wages, career opportunities, and sometimes their jobs to care for the servicemember. Caregivers can contact medical professionals or area Agency on Aging personnel to have the care recipient s needs fully assessed and to determine whether the caregiver has the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to provide proper care. It is advisable to reassess the care plan every three to six months. Support and service options for home care include family and friends, and home and community-based services, specially adult day care, home health agencies, and hospice. Other paid options include sitter services and nutrition programs. The biggest drawback to most options is the caregiver is not with the care recipient constantly. Be sure to take a home inventory, including photos, when you bring any outside caregiver into the home. Some care recipients are able to remain independent with assistance from family, friends, neighbors, or church members. Make a list of your informal network of helpers and how to contact them. Adult day care works well for care recipients who cannot be left alone yet do not need 24-hour nursing in a residential facility. While adult day care incurs expense, it can provide needed respite for a few hours or days. Home care combines health and support services for continued at-home living as long as possible. The health and needs of both care recipient and caregiver determine services. A physician s approval might be required. There are two types of home care services: health care monitored by health care professionals and nonmedical. Both types involve expense. Medicare and Medicaid and other heath insurance plans offer limited coverage for home care with restrictions. Hospice provides services and therapies at home to the terminally ill, enhancing their quality of life while controlling disease symptoms and restoring dignity until death. Medicare Part A pays 100 percent for hospice care at an approved facility. The VA pays 100 percent for hospice if the veteran s VA doctor orders it. Caregivers can call the VA Caregiver Support line toll free at (855) or visit to learn more. Or check out MOAA s new Tips for Lifelong Caregiving guide. It is vital for caregivers to find healthy and constructive coping strategies during the caregiving journey. We ll look at tips in Caregiving: Part 2 in the next newsletter. Ohio Joins U.S. Chamber s All*Vet States Web Site Ohio became the sixth state to join the U.S. Chamber of Commerce s All*Vet States web initiative, officials announced at a Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair in Cleveland today. All*Vet States is a web site hosted by the U.S. Chamber with employment, education and business start-up information for participating states. The site s goal is to goal is to showcase states that are working hard to create economic opportunities for veterans and military spouses and to highlight the resources available to those transitioning military families. I m very happy that Ohio has joined this effort, Ohio Department of Veteran Services Director Tim Gorrell said. Increasing the visibility of our state through the All*Vet States site is another way we re elevating Ohio s status as a veteran-friendly state, one that all veterans can be proud to call home. Ohio has worked aggressively to be a top destination for our nation s veterans and military spouses, said Eric Eversole, executive director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation s Hiring Our Heroes program. We are thrilled to work together through our All*Vet States initiative to help Ohio highlight the many economic and educational opportunities for the men and women who have served our country. The Ohio All*Vet States page features a message from Governor John R. Kasich and links to state job opportunities in all sectors as well as in Ohio s insurance industry. It also contains links to educational opportunities for veterans and their families in Ohio s public colleges and universities, business start-up information, and tax information for military service members and veterans. Ohio s page can be viewed here. The All*Vet States home page can be seen here. Hiring Our Heroes, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, created the All*Vet States initiative to highlight the man opportunities, services, and support being offered by states to attract and hire transitioning service members and military spouses. 4
