The New York National Guard s 27th Division trained at Camp Wadsworth from Sept until April of 1918 during World War I. N.Y. Soldiers prepared for WWI in S.C. By ERIC DURR, New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs By November of 1917 the 27, 000 Soldiers of the New York National Guard s 27th Division had said goodbye to their Families, marched through New York City, and were ready to get down to serious training. They did this at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina, just outside the city of Spartanburg. When the Guard s 7th Regiment -renamed the 107th Infantry-showed up on Sept. 11, 1917, the carpenters were still banging away some of the 1000 buildings at the camp. Work had only begun in July and by the end of August, along with 1000 buildings, 37 miles of pipe were installed, and 18,000 electric lights put in place. The Army ordered 629 cast iron stoves, 72,000 kegs of nails, and 6,119 doors for the work. - Division Soldiers wound up clearing those Total cost of the project was $2, 223, in 1917 dollars, which works out to $40 million in 2017 money. Still, after the war Major General John O Ryan, the division commander, recalled one planning glitch, which irked him. The camp s company mess halls had been designed to hold 150 Soldiers each. But the Army had decided that a company should have 250 men. This was a case in which the Army should have known better when it designed the buildings, O Ryan noted in his book The Story of the 27th Division. Wadsworth with Spartanburg. The Snake Road, a typical country dirt road, was in terrible repair, and couldn t forth between the camp and the city on business or on pass. The 22nd Engineers, under the command of Col. Cornelius Vanderbilt, shored up the built bridges, and generally put it in better shape. Today what remains of that country lane is known as Vanderbilt Road, in memory of the colonel and his engineers. While the camp and the Snake Road was under construction, so was the organization of the division. The New York National Guard s division had been organized in 1908 with three brigades of three regiments each. War called for a square division of two brigades with two regiments each. 6 Unlikely allies help mother see son graduate By ROBERT TIMMONS Fort Jackson Leader Courtesy photo Two sets of battle buddies pose after the Basic Combat Training graduation of Pvts. Dakota Haspert and Ramon Nazario Nov. 2 at Fort Jackson. Jennifer Weaver, far left, and Katherine Berrios-Borges met online and become mom-battle buddies. It took social-media born mom-battle buddies hundreds of miles apart spawned from two hurricanes to gather unlikely allies to help one Puerto Rican mother to be able to witness her son graduate Nov. 2 from Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. They like to call themselves mom-battle buddies because a chance encounter brought together parents of trainees who happened to be battle buddies themselves. Katherine Berrios-Borges was looking through the 3rd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment, and Fort Jackson Army Mom s Facebook pages, when she noticed a picture Jennifer Weaver posted of her son, Pvt. Dakota Haspert, with his battle buddy at Fort Jackson who just happened to be Pvt. Ramon Nazario, her son. Oh, it s my son, Berrios-Borges exclaimed. It s my baby. The mothers started chatting with each other online and later over the phone becoming fast friends and mom-battle buddies. But hurricanes Irma and Maria cut their correspondence short for a while, until recently. The hurricanes that cut a swath through the Caribbean this year exponentially increased the need to see her son and give him a hug. I just wanted to come because he left two voice mails saying, Mom are you OK? I wanted to hear your voice, she said. I wanted to be here so he could see that I was OK I wanted to get a hug from him because I needed it. There was one small, yet have to traverse before she could do that get enough I wanted to be here so he could see that I was OK... I wanted to get a hug from him because I needed it. Katherine Berrios-Borges money to purchase plane tickets that cost over a thousand and some dollars. Money she didn t have. Her mom-battle buddy came to the rescue enlisting an ally, the Robert Irvine Foundation, to help raise the money. I wanted her to get to see him, Weaver said as she started to tear up. It s been amazing to see the two reunited at Hilton Field. The foundation, started by celebrity Chef Robert Irvine, is a fend the nation. The foundation bought her the ticket no questions asked. That wasn t the only support Berrios-Borges and her son received. Other mothers began to help in any way they could. When it was apparent that she couldn t write her son because of the hurricanes, they began writing Nazario starting up a liaison between the Soldier and parent. I received 20 letters from moms in the support group, Nazario said after his graduation. The support group sent care packages to him and his mother. See ALLIES: Page 26

9 TEACHING THE PROFESSION OF ARMS IN THE 21 ST CENTURY By CAPT. TYLER SHIMANDLE 1st Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment Photo by ROBERT TIMMONS Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson, Fort Jackson commander listens to a question from a member of the audience during the Lt. Gen. Timothy Maude Leadership Lecture Series Nov. 7 at the Solomon Center. Johnson spoke during the lecture about the need for Soldiers to lead from the front and the need for character, competence and commitment. Johnson: Leadership is about building teams By ROBERT TIMMONS Fort Jackson Leader Over the past few weeks stories have been run in The Leader about how Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson, Fort Jackson commander, has been com- ards of the Army profession. On Tuesday he was able to speak directly to human resources professionals, installation and Richland Country Sheriff s Department leadership about becoming better stewards of the profession during the Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude Leadership Lecture Series. Michael Molosso, the deputy commandant of the Adjutant General School, said the lecture series is a great opportunity to learn more about leadership. Leadership isn t about being in charge, but rather about building a team. Anyone can be a boss; anyone can be in charge, said Teri Maude, wife of Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude, who was the highest ranking Soldier killed in the 9-11 terrorist attacks. A leader is someone who brings together a team to go forward and to commit to accomplishing its goal. This goal is evident in the post motto, the installation commander said. There is an enemy out there, opposed to all we stand for, that is studying you and our team, and waiting for the opportunity to pounce, Johnson said. Fort Jackson s motto, Victory Starts Here, Right Here is a motto that shows resolve to prepare and wake up every morning and improve our foxhole and move our Army team forward. It s the habit of excellence that ensures we get there, Johnson added. Army stewardship means being the best and surpassing the standards. We won t do it by teaching minimum Army standards, but by exceeding them and striving for excellence in everything we do. Leaders must lead from the front and not be afraid to make professional on the spot corrections. We must train for hardship, test ourselves in our grit, push ourselves we ve got to be the best stewards of the Army profession we can be, Johnson emphasized. We hold ourselves to uphold and exceed Army standards. See MAUDE: Page 10 What does it mean to be a profession of arms? Most Soldiers and civilians who work with and for the Department of Defense have probably heard this term. It seems obvious that serving in the military, and for the purposes of this article the Army, would mean that you are working a profession of arms. However, merely working a job or occupation does not make it a profession. Professions produce uniquely expert work. Doctors cure the sick, lawyers exonerate the accused, and Soldiers protect the defenseless. These occupations are held to a higher standard than others; they are well respected and society is dependent on their services. Therefore to become a professional, one assumes a moral obligation to continue to hone their skills and to teach and train the next generation their particular craft. When it comes to the Army the latter of these obligations happens at Basic Combat Training. with the most professional and competent - forefront of these units are the drill sergeants, selected based on their experience, professionalism, and tactical knowledge. These NCOs represent the best the Army has to offer. They are charged with turning civilians into Soldiers. As in any profession the relationship is built on a trust that the client, in this case the American people, has in the expert or professional the drill sergeant. That trust is that their sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers will be kept safe, expertly trained, and developed into professional Soldiers themselves. When it comes to teaching civilians the ways of our military profession a number of challenges arise. Instilling the Army Values and the Warrior Ethos into new trainees is perhaps the most complicated task of BCT. Passing the Army Physical Fitness Test or qualifying with your assigned weapon may be tasks uniquely alien to many of the trainees, but even those skills can be taught and learned quickly through expert instruction and repetition. See TEACHING: Page 27

10 Maude Continued from Page 9 It is our character, our competence and our commitment that will carry the day. It is the discipline in supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States that makes us 10-feet tall to all of our enemies. It s not our weapons, it s not other capabilities it s the capability within. Johnson illustrated good leadership with the example of Maj. Dick Winters, the commander of Easy Company, 2nd of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment during the D-Day invasion and the march across most of Western Europe. Winters had the right approach to leadership leading from the front while Capt. Herbert Sobel, the textbook leadership style, he was named one of the reasons for the company s combat successes because of the tough training he instilled in the unit. Leadership isn t a popularity contest, he told the leaders at the event, but rather should prepare to take Soldiers farther than they think they can get and model what right looks like. The lecture series is meant to inspire young Soldiers to become strong Army leaders and to be passionate mentors, and teachers for the good of the Army. Mary Jones performs triage on an injured Soldier during a portion of the Expert Field Medical Badge qualifications on Fort Bragg. More than 325 Soldiers recently competed to earn the Expert Field Medical Badge at the installation. Three Fort Jackson Soldiers were among those to earn the badge. Of the more than 325 competitors vying to earn the Expert Field Medical Badge at Fort Bragg recently, only a third succeeded. Among that successful minority were Capt. Michael McCaffrie, Capt. Tracey Morel and Spc. Mary Jones, all from the Medical Department Activity Fort Jackson. We went with three people, and we graduated those same three people with two of them being honor grads, said Mc- Caffrie. In order to earn the EFMB, participants must pass a series of challenges including a comprehensive written exam, weapons qual- navigation, a 12-mile forced road march, and several other tactical combat casualty care, medical and casualty evacuation, warrior skills, and communications tasks. All of this makes the EFMB Hands down, our preparation made the experience almost feel easy. Capt. Tracey Morel prestigious Army special skill badges to earn. The EFMB is a coveted badge within the medical to earn, McCaffrie said. We spent almost all of our weekends practicing and training on our medical, chemical, and warrior tasks with and on each other. According to all three competitors, working as a team is what ultimately led to their shared success. Hands down, our preparation made the experience almost feel easy, Morel said. We had rehearsed and practiced to point of muscle memory. There was not much thinking involved during the testing period because our hands and bodies already knew what to do. For her part, Jones considered the group s past attempts as another crucial element to preparing for the challenge. [We] have all tried receiving the EFMB before, so we knew how to prepare, she said. As Soldiers we are often asked to rise to the occasion, our creeds, beliefs, and training enables us to do so. I believe in our mission, our profession, and I believe in you the American Soldier. The ceremony at MacArthur Parade Field included the ceremonial passing of the MEDCOM colors to illustrate the passing of responsibility and leadership to the incoming Command Sergeant Major. Regarding those who praised Gragg on his appointment, As I embark on this journey, I want to ensure all those people [who offered me praise] that I didn t achieve this by myself, I am nothing but a collage of all the leaders who have invested in me leaders that have left an indelible mark on me I truly appreciate all the patience, wisdom, and guidance you have shared with me over the last 28 years. Prior to his appointment, Gragg held numerous leadership positions including Medical Evacuation NCO, Flight Medic, Department of OBGYN NCOIC, Drill Sergeant, Interim AMEDD Center and School Command Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major U.S. Army Physical Disability Agency, and Command Sergeant Major Center for Initial Military Training, Fort Eustis, Virginia.

There you have it, shoot, move and communicate; that can happen in one minute. It can happen to any of us who deploy at any time, and any Soldier that comes out of Basic Combat Training. Attendees broke out into different working groups and presented Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson, Fort Jackson commander, recommended courses of action. These recommendations would be looked at by Frost and Johnson before being forwarded to the Army. One course of action looked at was ways to help reduce drill sergeant workload so they could concentrate more on training new Soldiers instead of peripheral tasks. Workshop attendees were also tasked by Fort Jackson s commander to teach the Army story to build on the strong Army culture. We have to know the Army story, Johnson said. One of the things the Army isn t good at is knowing our own story. We have to decide what that story is, create what the sound bites of history are, and we have to know it, we have to teach it, and we have to reinforce it. The training needs to show the wonderful, rich, proud history of the United States Army, he said. Johnson called on attendees to also look at the standards we want to lay out to earn the right to be called a Soldier. The Soldiers at the workshop have the opportunity to create the future of our Army, said Command Sgt. Maj. Lamont Christian, Fort Jackson s senior enlisted leader. Photo by ROBERT TIMMONS Maj. Gen.
