3 SKILLS: Functional Area 49 Operations Research/Systems Analysis officers (ORSAs) must be able to listen skillfully to their stakeholders requirements and discern the issue(s) to be investigated and/or solved. They synthesize, organize, assess, and interpret qualitative and quantitative data in order to assist decision makers in addressing complex requirements. The FA49 officer is a master communicator, who is articulate, diligent, accurate, tactful, and effective in both written and verbal form. A proficient FA49 officer is able to make sense of complex systems by employing an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving. ORSAs derive their recommendations from careful analysis, novel thinking, and a design mindset. An ORSA is equally comfortable serving as an advisor, team member, organizer, or project manager. They are adept negotiators, facilitators, mentors, and counselors. KNOWLEDGE: The FA49 community consists primarily of individuals with academic degrees from analytically rigorous disciplines. Upon accession into FA49, developmental career planning will emphasize graduate study in an ORSA-related field. ORSA-specific professional military education will emphasize practical application of analytical tools, critical thinking, and straightforward communication of complex results. 85% of Army ORSAs possess a graduate degree. FA49 selects officers from all operational backgrounds, which enables the functional area to assist with problem-solving in every facet of Army and Joint operations. Our officers have demonstrated the ability to serve successfully as tactical leaders. This tactical experience provides the common understanding necessary for FA49s to communicate effectively with Army leaders and decision-makers. DOMAIN SPEIFI EDUATION: Focus on relevant disciplines listed above, with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
