Fred Aranow, Spokane County pro tem judge, will be our guest speaker. He will focus on the Spokane County Veterans Court (details p. 4). Proceeds from the raffle will go to the Veterans Home. Please bring something for the raffle and for the Support the Troops Box. It s time to get Christmas boxes on the way. Small toiletry items and hand and foot warmers are much appreciated. We also welcome cash donations for purchasing items and for postage. This is going to be a particularly cold and lonely Christmas for our Afghanistan troops with the nation s attention focused on internal politics and economic woes. Let s make certain they know they are at the forefront of our thoughts and prayers! I m among three of your chapter officers who just returned from the MOAA Chapter Presidents Symposium in Las Vegas. What we heard was gratifying. A longer report which will be posted on the website in a week or so, but here s a few bullets: Chief Recruiter, Newsltr. Ed. & IPP Marilyn Hunt, CDR, USN (Ret.) cinc@frontier.com Director & Travel Point of Contact Richard H. Oates, LTC, USMC (Ret.) rhoates@roadrunner.com Director & Program Chair Robert Imle, Lt Col, USAF (Ret.) robertmargaretimle@gmail.com Director & Web Page Coordinator Chuck Lund, CAPT, USN cplund3@comcast.net Director, Chaplain, Program Comm. Betty Krafft, LCDR, USN (Ret.) bkrafft@spocom.com The October issue of Military Officer will have a wrap with the presidential candidates responses to five written questions from MOAA. They were asked to keep their total responses to 1,250 words. Following 10 years of major legislative wins on behalf of our military, MOAA expects to be playing defense for next 3-5 years due to budget pressures. Major changes are coming in 2013 to recruiting. MOAA will focus significant resources on recruiting chapter members, since the Chapter is the true strength of the organization. Only one of six MOAA members is presently a member of a local chapter. Clear recognition of the essential role of spouses and widows and vastly increased resources going to support their issues and, in turn, to draw on their strengths. (Continued on page 4). It s open to all chapter members, not just the members of the Widows and Wives Club. It will be held at the Clark House on Hayden Lake, 5250 East Hayden Lake Road, starting at Noon. We re getting exceptional treatment because they normally do not serve lunch but will do so for us, and afterwards we ll take a tour of this delightful place. Come treat yourself to a wonderful meal in a bygone time of luxury. The Clark House overlooks the shores of Hayden Lake, Idaho, on a 12 acre estate, a reminder of a glorious past complete with princes, presidents, power, wealth and mystery. You must make your reservation with Pat Connell by calling The November 6 th luncheon will be at the Taste of Dome at the Asian Café and Bakery, 3329 East Sprague Avenue at our regular time of 1 PM. Call Pat Tolley at to reserve your place. Our December 4 th luncheon will be at Ripples on the River, Red Lion River Inn, 700 North Division. Call Kay White at to make your reservation. Our projects are still the same: food or cash for the food bank; household items for the Homeless Veterans Program; and goodies for the veterans and their spouses who reside in the Spokane Veterans Home. You can check the lists of items and goodies requested on our web site WINNER OF 50/50 RAFFLE at SEP SOCIAL Chuck Young won the 50/50 raffle at the Buck Knives social, but he only kept half of his half, so the chapter netted $120 for the MOAA Scholarship Fund. Many thanks, Chuck! By the way, we had a 50/50 because we were short on time. Rest assured we ll have a regular raffle in October at the CDA Resort. 4 Now Hear This! FRED ARANOW, GUEST SPEAKER at 21 OCT SOCIAL Focus on Veterans Court Fred Aranow, pro tem judge in the Spokane County District Court, will be our guest speaker at the Coeur d Alene Resort on 21 October. He will focus on his involvement with the Spokane Veterans Court, which is a new approach whereby veteran defendants may be diverted from main stream court to the specialized Veterans Court docket. One significant difference is that many Defendants are not convicted or forced to enter a guilty plea. Once they live up to their commitment, the charges against them may be dismissed. Defendants are typically assigned two years probation, attendance at four meetings, and participation in a weekly Mentoring relationship. Fred is also a retired Army Colonel who served in Vietnam with the 101 st Airborne Division from PRESIDENT S NOTES By Ralph Shrigley (continued from p. 1) Also at the October Social, we will be presenting and voting on the slate of Board Members and Officers for next year. As you will see, we are fortunate to have so many talented, dedicated people willing to serve and lead the chapter. A quick word on upcoming elections. Our ability to support and represent our troops rests in large part on our ability to engage with our elected representatives, regardless of party. We must and will work with whomever is elected by our fellow citizens. Please be engaged and enthusiastic in exercising your rights during the upcoming election, but remember not to claim or imply that you represent MOAA in your activities. We must preserve our nonpartisan status. Finally, you have probably noted the lack of updates to the website in recent months. We have engaged a new website manager and hope to roll out the new, updated product soon. Thanks for your patience. Support the Troops if You Can t Come to Socials If you cannot attend chapter socials but would like to be a part of our Support the Troops program, we can certainly use your donation to buy items to send overseas or help pay for postage.
