This year on Saturday, Nov. 11 we will start our day as the registration place for a Community 5K race to benefit veterans. After the Veterans Day parade and the ceremony in Barre City Park we are sponsoring a free luncheon. Squadron 10 of Sons of The American Legion is hosting a money raffle that afternoon. We will have THE HITMEN band for live music that evening. At Post 10 this will be day filled with activity for our community and to benefit our veterans. We invite you to come and participate. If you re a runner, come register and enjoy the race. Come watch the parade from the front lawn of the Legion and enjoy lunch with us. Stay awhile and support the SAL raffle - maybe you'll win! The music that evening is sure to entertain. Come support veterans come be recognized for your service come support your American Legion and come out and have some fun. Thank you to our volunteers and thank you to our veterans who give us cause and purpose. Zuck * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE SECOND VICE COMMANDER Granite City 5K Run/Walk for Veterans - -The Third Annual Granite City 5K Run/Walk for Veterans will be held in Barre on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, 9 a.m. Registration at Post 10. For details: Veterans Day plans The Barre Area Veterans Council will celebrate our Barre area veterans on Veterans Day, Saturday Nov. 11 with a parade followed by a ceremony in Barre City Park. Parade starts at 10 a.m. and the ceremony at Barre City Park at 11 a.m. If inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Barre Auditorium. Lunch will be at Post 10 after the ceremony at City Park. Joseph Zickmund, Commander * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FROM THE ADJUTANT Thank you all who have submitted your membership renewals for If you have not paid your 2018 dues by December 31, you will lose your status as a member in good standing of The Leonard Normandeau, Post Adjutant American Legion and Barre Post 10. On January 1, 2018 you will lose the privileges you enjoy at Post 10 and other Legion posts as well as the benefits of The American Legion, including the free LIT insurance coverage. 4 NEWS FROM AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY (ALA) UNIT 10 ATTENTION: American Legion Post 10 Family Members: Post 10, Squadron 10, Unit 10 and Junior Auxiliary members, and Legion Riders Chapter 10 A senior high school student in your family may qualify for a scholarship or award from American Legion Auxiliary National, Department of Vermont, or Unit 10. There will be an Overview of all scholarships posted on each bulletin board at Post 10. This will include qualifying information and deadline dates. Please look at individual applications in a blue folder in the Now and Then Library adjacent to the Old Glory Lounge. Please take any applications you think may apply. High school Junior students would benefit from looking at the applications to plan ahead for next year. Please share the information with neighbors and friends who have students eligible to apply. Maria McKnight, Unit 10 Education Chairman.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * AMERICAN EX-PRISONERS OF WAR, VERMONT CHAPTER 1 On October 19 we had the extreme pleasure of hosting, for the second year, the luncheon for American Ex-Prisoners of War, Vermont Chapter 1. It was beyond humbling to be able to sit after the luncheon and listen to these soldiers recount their experiences of being held prisoner and their journeys back home. They are such a special group of people and we are pleased they decided to come back this year and have already booked our Post for their annual meeting/luncheon next year. Moments like these make me so proud to be your manager here at American Legion Barre Post 10. Thank you, Dennis Barney and Lorelei Lissor for helping prepare and serve the meal. The chapter has nine members. On or about Veterans Day, many national and local businesses will honor veterans with discounts or other benefits in recognition of their service to our country. Watch the media for local offerings. The Barre Area Veterans Council will make the annual Christmas basket and greeting card distribution to veterans in the Barre area Health and Rehabilitation Centers and to local shut-ins on Saturday, Dec. 16, beginning at 9 a.m. until completed. Volunteers are needed to help with this worthy endeavor and are asked to meet at American Legion Post 10, 320 North Main Street, Barre at that time. Also, if anyone knows of a deserving veteran that is shutin at home, please provide the name and address to Stephen Weston at or by at navyvet261@myfairpoint.net. I hope you all enjoyed my favorite season--fall. I didn't see the colors I had hoped for but couldn't ask for better weather. The Club has been very busy over the past couple of months. Along with many of our great bands we were pleased that several private functions enjoyed the use of our facilities. Plans are developing for the holiday season at the Club. The Post Christmas Social is on the calendar for Dec. 23 followed by The Backburners band. Katina Franks, Post 10 Club Manager Its hard to believe that the New Years Party is coming up soon. We are planning a very nice meal with choice of entrees, and we are excited to have The Adams Band booked for the evening. You should get your tickets soon; seating is limited and there will be no reservations. We hope everyone will enjoy what's left of this beautiful fall weather. Rohan will award her national commander 'Family First!' incentive pin to any American Legion Family member who obtains any combination of three eligible new members into the American Legion Family (The American Legion, Sons of The American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary). A new member is any eligible person joining for the 2018 membership year who was not a member of the American Legion Family during the 2017 membership year. To maintain the integrity of the national commander's pin incentive program, only one pin will be awarded per individual. Upon receipt, national membership staff will confirm the names and mail the pin directly to the person who earned it. Commander Rohan's incentive program will end June 30, 2018, or when supplies are exhausted.
