2 PRESIDENT S COMMENTS President Monroe Gildersleeve, Jr. ELECTION SECURITY Finally, the FY 2018 omnibus bill includes $380 million in grant funding states for election security improvements, including enhanced election technology and increasing election Cyber security. The bill grants distribution authority to the Elections Assistance Commission which has until the week of May 7, 2018 to distribute these funds. Numerous other county programs were funded in the FY 2018 omnibus bill. As the 2018 election cycle approaches, Congress will be less likely to pass other major pieces of legislation, and many anticipate this will be the final large bill passed before November. However, a few outstanding issues remain, including government appropriations for FY 2019 and re-authorization of the National Flood Insurance Program and the Federal Aviation Administration. 3 Thirty-six members and guests gathered at Casey Jones Distillery near Hopkinsville for a nice meal provided by Four Seasons Catering. The owner of the facility, Arlon Casey Jones ( AJ ), gave an interesting introduction, relating the distillery beginnings to his grandfather and how they started their company as a hobby initially. CW4 Gildersleeve welcomed our guests and several returning members; then, presented a Certificate of Appreciation to AJ for the support of Kentucky and Tennessee veterans as well as being excellent hosts for our meeting. Kelley Young and Henry Moore PREVIOUS MEETING HIGHLIGHTS AJ & Monroe Gildersleeve Following the meal, CW4 Gildersleeve introduced Henry Moore from AseraCare Hospice who gave a very moving presentation on their services for veterans. He expressed his honor at being able to serve veterans during their final days. Kelley Young then asked the members to consider volunteering their time to care for their patients, since veterans can relate so well with fellow veterans. On completion of the presentation, President Gildersleeve presented Certificates of Appreciation to the presenters for their difficult but much-needed service to veterans. Jim Grater & Monroe Gildersleeve Capt Jim Grater was then called up and presented a MOAA pin as one of our newest chapter members. Maj Bill Summers then gave a legislative update. We have four of five sponsored bills that look like they will be signed by the governor. The one bill that did not go forward was the bill to standardize naming of the veteran homes, which was opposed by the Tenn Dept of Veteran Services. We will address that issue this summer. Plans continue to get TVET operational this summer. A question was asked about the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, which TN veterans can not access. This has been an ongoing issue, and we will contact the Kentucky veterans coalition (JECVO) to see if they can offer some assistance. COL Jeff Yaeger announced that we will give three scholarships of $1250 each with two going to Clarksville HS in Tennessee and one to Christian Central HS in Kentucky. He also updated everyone on the Ft Campbell Invitational Turkey Hunt on 7 Apr. Turnout was very good, with 27 soldiers and 59 total participants. On the down side, he said it was bone cold, snowing, and they shot a total of one turkey. CW4 Gildersleeve informed the members that there would be a Pro horse-shoe tournament at the Civitan Park on 1 June. Cindy Summers (the new grandmother!) announced that the Ft Campbell Town Center pharmacy was doing immunizations (flu, shingles, and tetanus).
