MGH Environmental Health & Safety Hazard Communication Chemical Hazard Classifications The HAZCOM standard recognizes the following hazard classes. Each class also includes categories and sub-categories that indicate relative hazard severity for chemicals within the class. Health Hazard Classes (ref: HAZCOM Standard Appendix A) Acute toxicity Skin corrosion / irritation Serious eye damage/eye irritation Respiratory or skin sensitization Germ cell mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Reproductive toxicity Specific target organ toxicity single exposure Specific target organ toxicity repeated or prolonged exposure Aspiration hazard Physical Hazard Classes (ref: HAZCOM Standard Appendix B) Explosives Flammable gases Flammable aerosols Oxidizing gases Gases under pressure Flammable liquids Flammable solids Self-reactive chemicals Pyrophoric Liquids Pyrophoric solids Self-Heating Chemicals Emit flammable gases on contact with water Oxidizing liquids Oxidizing solids Organic peroxides Corrosive to metals OSHA Defined Hazards: Pyrophoric gas, Simple Asphyxiant, Combustible Dust
MGH Environmental Health & Safety Hazard Communication Information by Hazard Class Respiratory or Skin Sensitization A respiratory sensitizer leads to hypersensitivity of the airways following inhalation of the substance. Skin sensitizers lead to allergic response following skin contact. Hazard Category 1A &1B Respiratory 1A & 1B Skin Signal Word Danger Warning Hazard Statement Pictogram May cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled May cause an allergic skin reaction General Precautions Respiratory Avoid breathing Use hoods; respiratory protection as last resort On exposure, move to fresh air if breathing difficult Seek medical follow up if symptomatic Follow all disposal rules for waste materials Always check specific substance s Safety Date Sheet for additional information General Precautions Skin Avoid breathing Protect work clothing; if contaminated, wash at workplace before reuse if possible or discard as hazardous waste Use protective gloves Wash skin on exposure per recommendations Seek medical follow up for rashes Follow all disposal rules for waste materials Always check specific substance s Safety Data Sheet for additional information

Status and Updates from Task Forces MGH Research Safety Committee Lab Survey Task Force Update Michael Fisher, Director, RSMG

Laboratory Safety Surveys We will conduct lab surveys to identify and assist in the mitigation of deficiencies that are not in compliance with applicable codes, standards, policies and regulations and that may present an unsafe research environment. This is a collaborative effort with the Departments and laboratory personnel.
Laboratory Safety Surveys Update At the last Survey Task Force meeting, we reviewed a selection of sample inspection checklists from other entities as well as a revision of the MGH Lab Rounds prepared by Safety. The Committee created a rough draft of a new inspection checklist, which was assigned to a small group who further modified the document and converted the questions into a uniform format. The existing group conducting lab safety rounds is testing the new survey instrument and the Task Force will discuss their comments at the next scheduled meeting.
Laboratory Safety Surveys Next Steps The next step is to develop and test a pre-survey questionnaire for the labs to prepare prior to scheduled inspections. It is also our intent to develop an online tracking and reporting system.
Remember, unless we are constantly vigilant, laboratory accidents can happen anytime, anywhere!
