7 People Around Us: Four veterans at the senior center recall their military service and life s work By Alex Bud Gavitt Veterans Day is a holiday to honor all those who served our country in the military during wartime and peacetime. This is marked annually on November 11 with parades and observances. Four veterans who are active in the Lebanon Senior Center are among those who recalled what they did while serving in the military. John Champe, 95, of Lebanon put aside his studies at Yale University to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was denied his choice however, because he had a spot on his lung. Instead, he was sent to the Army s radio school in Illinois where he learned how to send and receive messages in Morse code as a radio operator. After finishing four months of training, he went on the Queen Elizabeth to London, England where the city was being bombed by what was known to the Allies as Hitler s buzz bombs. He began working at General Dwight D. Eisenhower s London headquarters before the radio station moved to Paris. He set up and managed a small radio station there with the rank of Corporal. During the war, a U.S. intelligence agency, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) did all kinds of things to mislead the enemy, recalled John. Right after Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8, 1945 he was flown back to the U.S. and attended Officer s Candidate School. He returned home just in time to be in Times Square on Victory over Japan (VJ) Day. John spent three years of active duty, including several months in Paris, France in World War II and another two years in Germany during the Korean War. While in Germany, he was an Intelligence Officer in charge of security, handling top secret documents stored in a safe. Back home, he joined the Air National Guard, retiring as a Major at age 60. During this time he resumed his studies at Yale University, receiving a bachelor s degree in mathematics. He worked 20 years as an actuary at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company and another nine years at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield, Massachusetts. Jim Garrett, 93, of Lebanon served three years of active duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a ground-based aircraft electrician and mechanic in the 14th Air Force in Kunming, China. While there, he saw P-40 Warhawk fighter planes escort B-25 s on bombing raids in Japanese held territory in China. Fortunately, most of the Allied planes returned safely to the base. Lacking a few months in the completion of his overseas assignment to fly back to the U.S., he transferred to a Chinese troop carrier that took him to a safe area in China. He then went on a ship to Spokane, Washington in 1944 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. The transfer was a blessing, Jim said, because new airplanes had been delivered to the base. I was lucky since one of those planes crashed, killing my best buddy. His wife called me to talk about the loss of her husband and his service to our country. After the war, Jim was employed as a photographer at General Motors in Kansas City, Kansas. He took photographs of various company events as well as all accidents in the plant. Later, he managed the plant s photo staff. Towards the end of his career, he worked at a hardware store and also at a Walmart. Ray Jello, a retired union electrician and now a Lebanon gentleman farmer, joined the Submarine Service in 1960 and then transferred to the Navy Seabees. He went on active duty from 1963 to 1965 and served another 18 months as a Navy reservist. Ray received military training as an electrician at the Hueneme Base in Oxnard, California. He was deployed to Okinawa where he was a construction worker for landing forces of the 3rd Marine Division. Later on he helped restore utilities after a typhoon hit Guam. During his military service, he participated in Operation Backpack, one of the largest peacetime training maneuvers involving 200 ships and thousands of troops at Taiwan in Upon his honorable discharge, Ray worked as a union electrician for 34 years, of which 23 were at the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Connecticut, a division of General Dynamics. During his working years he traveled extensively to Germany, Norway, China, Hawaii, Japan, Hungary, Poland, and Greece. Looking back, Ray says: I was proud to serve in the military. It was a great experience. I firmly believe that military service makes men out of boys. John Kochiss of Franklin joined the National Guard in He served six months of active duty at Fort Dix in New Jersey and 5 1/2 years as a Specialist 4 Reservist Clerk in the 242nd Army Engineer Corps headquarters out of Stratford, Connecticut. He attended summer drills at the Guard s working camp in East Lyme, Connecticut and a few at Fort Drum in upstate New York. States John: In high school many students, including me, were unsure of what they wanted to do in life. For them, the military is a good alternative as well as a growing up experience. In my family, he continues, my son Jeffrey wasn t sure what he wanted to do and so enlisted in the Air Force. He spent all his time stationed in Germany and then went on to college. John, who has a bachelor s degree in business with an emphasis in accounting from West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, worked 20 years as a field representative for the Connecticut Department of Labor. I felt donating my time in the military was reasonably satisfying, concluded John. Lebanon Senior Center director Darcy Battye issued this statement on the upcoming Veterans Day, I am very grateful to those who served in the military. The four seniors Alex profiled in this People Around Us article deserve our utmost thanks and respect for their service to our country.
