1 SEASONAL UPDATE Spring & Summer 2014 w Initiat Photo: Chunrong Liu Since March 2014, Fudan-European Centre for China Studies has continued to enhance its visibility by initiating and co-organizing a series of seminars and visits, and even a graduate-level joint course on China at Københavns Universitet (KU). These efforts have consolidated the academic ties with our partners and led to some exciting developments of new research initiative on China. 1

2 EVENT HIGHLIGHTS 4-6/3: On behalf of Fudan Centre, Chunrong Liu joined a delegation from China and visited College of Europe at Bruges, Belgium. The delegation was hosted by Mission of the People's Republic of China to the European Union and includes Prof. Feng Xiaoyuan (VP of Fudan University), Prof. Yin Zhihong (VP of Renmin University of China) and Prof. Shi Jian (VP of Sichuan University). The visit aims at advancing the strategic research collaboration on China-EU relations. Chunrong Liu also met with Prof. Gustaaf Geeraerts, Director of Brussels Institute of Contemporary China Studies (BICCS), for institutional engagement. 11/3: Prof. Francis Muller of University of Strasbourg visited Fudan Centre and gave a lunch talk on Creativity, Growth, Nudge and Happiness: the Case of Shanghai. Prof. Muller has been a visiting scholar at the school of economy at Fudan. His talk showed interesting economic perspectives on the measurement and dynamics of happiness in the Chinese context. 23/3: Fudan Centre brought together Contemporary China Social Life Data and Research Center at Fudan and the research group of life-mode analysis from KU s Saxo Institute, and organized a Sino-Nordic Workshop on Life-Mode Analysis at Fudan University. Leading Danish ethnologist Thomas Højrup presented a special lecture on The essence of life-mode analysis, which was jointed by Fudan anthropologist Prof. Zhang Letian s lecture on Collectivism in Rural China. The workshop was followed by two sessions of discussion on state power and social life transformation. Fudan Centre initiated this event as an effort to identity hidden agendas of cross-disciplinary, comparative research on Chinese sociopolitical development. Chunrong Liu contributed a talk on the social impacts of China s hyper-urbanization, and he also exposed the Danish visitors to urban community in Shanghai and made a research excursion to Hubei and Guangdong after the workshop. 2

3 Scholars from both sides were preoccupied with the overlapping interests explored through this workshop. 17/4: Fudan Centre received the visit of Fudan law school delegation led by vice dean Prof. Wang Wei. Working jointly with Centre for Enterprise Liability of KU Law School, the Centre organized two special discussion sessions on China and Arctic: Legal Perspective and China s Legal Reforms. After that, Geir Helgesen, Chunrong Liu and Bent Ole Gram Mortensen signed a Letter of Intent between Fudan Centre and Danish Forum for Chinese Law and Legal Culture. With support from S.C. Van Foundation, the forum was led by KU law Professor Ditlev Tamm and Prof. Bent Ole Gram Mortensen and serves as a platform for research and other related activities regarding Chinese Law and Legal Culture /4: Fudan Centre was engaged in the 2014 BI-Fudan MBA Faculty Meeting in Copenhagen. The delegates include Lars Bo Kaspersen, Geir Helgesen, Bertel Heurlin and Camillar Sørensen. 4 strategy of Fudan Centre with Fudan VP Prof. Lin Shangli, and KU S talent PhD program and research cooperation with SIRPA of Fudan. In collaboration with Seaker Chan Centre for Comparative Political Development, Fudan Centre also hosted a special lecture by Prof. Kaspersen, discussing how to compare sociopolitical development between China and the Nordic countries. 11/6: Prof. Liu Chenggong, Vice Chancellor of Fudan, led a delegation to visit KU. Fudan Centre organized a seminar on Fudan-KU research collaboration on humanities and social sciences. Major China related programs, including ADI and ThinkChina, and emerging collaborative research interests, including the comparative study of migration and urbanization, cultural heritage, and state-society relations were extensively discussed in the seminar. Dr. Zhang Yi, deputy director of the office of humanities and social sciences programs at Fudan and director of Shanghai Forum briefed the participants on Fudan Development Institute and Fudan Platform for humanities and social sciences. The delegation was greeted by KU s Prorector Prof. Thomas Bjørnholm. The visit has identified some common interests and reconfirmed the strategic ties between Fudan and KU. 17/6: Chunrong Liu delivered the opening research presentation at the Asia Brown Bag Lecture Series, which is jointly organized by NIAS and ADI. The topic, titled Governing China s Urbanization, touches upon the critical aspects of governing challenges associated with massive urbanization in China. He also analyzed recent policy and institutional responses to these challenges. 13/8: Chunrong Liu gave a lecture on Ideological Innovation in China at the KU summer course The Chinese Dream: Anthropological Approaches to Understanding Contemporary China organized by he Dept. of Anthropology and ADI. He showed the post-reform adaptation of political ideologies and examined their relevance to ordinary people s quandaries, hopes and desires. Governing China s Urbanization by Chunrong Liu, Fudan-European Centre for China Studies Urbanization has been the new buzzword in China since the formation of new leadership in While it is widely regarded as a decisive driving force of economic growth, comprehensive national strategy to lift urbanization has also generated an array of sociopolitical problems. This talk will address two critical aspects of governing challenges associated with massive urbanization in China: land-based conflicts and citizenship issues, which raise important theoretical questions concerning regime resilience and adaptation. Policy and institutional responses to these challenges will also be discussed. Continued economic growth and upward social mobility are key to his vision but it is also used to refer to many other issues. This course sheds light on the relationship between state rhetoric and actual social practice as it explores the quandaries, hopes and desires of Chinese citizens, including the mismatch between dreams and the sometimes daunting race for success amidst limited possibilities. 5 14/8: Dr. Nancy Chen, associate professor of management and director of master program on organization behavior at Hong Kong based Lingnan University visited Fudan Centre and NIAS. She delivered a talk on Harmony in Sino-Western Joints Ventures in China: the Role of Guanxi and Constructive Controversy" at the Centre s lunch lecture series. Geir Helgesen and Chunrong Liu moderated the discussion and emphasized that harmony, despite being so multifaceted, is a shared and relevant value in both Chinese society and the West. Privatisation and Western China 21/8: Chunrong Liu was invited to University of Oslo (UiO) and presented the Fudan Centre to China experts community at UiO. He was also engaged in the discussion of Nordic Center Fudan as a tool for bilateral cooperation with China. Prof. Stein Kuhnle from University of Bergen, Prof. Harriet Bjerrum Nielsen from Center for Gender Research at UiO, Special Adviser Ann Elin Hattrem of Norwegian Research Council jointed the seminar Income Inequality in discussion. 6 ONGOING INITIATIVES AND UPCOMING EVENTS IN FALL AND WINTER 2014 A conceptualization paper has been worked out in collaboration with ThinkChina and Denmark Local Government Association. The proposal envisions a platform for policy dialogue on Sino-Danish local governance. Chunrong Liu has proposed to organize a workshop with Department of Political Science on Contemporary Chinese state activism from Comparative Perspective, to be held in this December. In the Fall semester of 2014, Chunrong Liu start a joint course on Domestic Change and the Development of China as a Great Power with Professor Camilla Sorensen at KU. This course, with an aim to engage in the current debate on the rise of China by analyzing the nexus of domestic politics and foreign policy, shows the vision of Fudan Centre in accompanying the growth of China knowledge among graduate students at KU. On 23-25, Fudan Centre will be associated with ADI annual conference. Chunrong Liu will coordinate a special panel on Maritime Territorial Disputes: China and its Neighbours with Prof. Bertel Huerlin. In October, Prof. Daniel Bell from Tsinghua University will visit NIAS and Fudan Centre. And, there will be four scholars from Fudan to visit the Centre - Ding Chun (Professor of Economy, Director of Centre for European Studies), Bai Tongdong (Professor of Philosophy), Xiao Jialing (Associate Professor of International Relations), and Xin Qiang (Professor of International Relations, Deputy Director of Centre for American Studies). Relevant academic activities will be planed. 6
