The forty-six Chapter members, spouses and guests who made the trip up the hill on a sunny, breezy, late morning to Camp Smith and then to the Sunset Lanai were treated to spectacular views of Pearl Harbor/Hickam and the leeward coast of Oahu. Our Chapter ladies, specifically, Jane Kekoa, Marion Von, Helene Webster and Taffy Wells, did an outstanding job of decorating our tables and assisting at the registration desk. Special thanks go to Curt Lee and Helene who collected the majority of the goodies that overloaded the Door Prize table and graced each place setting. Following the Pledge of Allegiance led by Chapter President Curt Lee and the Invocation by Chapter Vice-President Vernon Von, bottles of sparkling cider were opened at each table and toasts were led by: John Ma, to the United States; Mark Webster, to our Armed Forces and Veterans; Curt Lee, to MOAA; and Vernon Von, to the Holiday See Christmas Luncheon Page 3 Inside January Issue Birthdays 9 Bridge Report 7 Calendar of Events 2 Chairman s Corner 2 Chapter Leaders 10 Golf Report 8 HVGD #6 6 Kudos 6 Membership Application 9 MOAA Christmas Party 4 Obituary 7 Reservation Form 9 VA ID Card Security 5 Aloha Chapter January Luncheon Meeting Our first meeting of the new year will be at Hale Ikena, Ft. 2 Page 2 Nā Leo O Nā Koa No. 15, January 2014 Chairman s Corner By Mark Webster The year 2013 was an especially memorable one for our Aloha Chapter as we gathered every month in fellowship at interesting monthly programs arranged by Jack Bohman, our dedicated and exceptionally efficient Program Chairman. He was assisted by Ira Tagawa and Melvin Soong. The Merrie Ladies are commended for handling the registration for our functions and beautifully decorating our luncheon tables. A few of the more memorable events last year were a tour of Queen Emma Palace in April; a presentation in May on the previously highly classified Project Corona regarding the snagging of film capsules ejected from satellites; a luncheon in August to learn all about Tsunamis Waves of Destruction; a tour of the John A. Burns School of Medicine in September; a very informative audio-visual talk on Battlefield Oahu, 1941, by the National Park Service Historian; and, of course, our annual Christmas party, a luncheon this year at the Sunset Lanai, Camp H. M. Smith. Your 2013 Board of Directors has appointed BG John Ma, USA, Ret., to serve as our Chapter President for 2014, replacing COL Curtis Lee. BG Ma, in turn, has selected his executive committee: MG Stephen Tom, USA, Ret., to serve as his Vice President; COL Ira Tagawa, USA, Ret., to continue on as Secretary; and LTCOL John Kim, USAF, Ret., to serve as his Treasurer. All three officers have accepted their appointments for All committee chairs have agreed to remain in their respective positions except for Programs; LTC Jack Bohman, USA, Ret., has agreed to stay on for a few months as Program Chairman until a replacement can be transitioned into that position. Any volunteers? At our annual General Membership luncheon meeting on 21 November, MG Kelly Lau, USA, Ret., Chairman of our Nominating Committee, presented his nominees for the four openings on our Board of Directors and the four openings as new Scholarship Fund trustees. All eight nominees were unanimously approved by the membership. Accordingly, at our first meeting in 2014, at 1100 on Friday, 24 January, at Hale Ikena, Ft. Shafter, Kelly Lau will officiate at our annual Installation Ceremony of our chapter s new officers to our Board of Directors, namely, COL Wesley Fong, USA, Ret., COL Melvin Soong, USA, Ret., COL Ira Tagawa, USA, Ret., and LTC Harold Takenaka, USA, Ret. Afterwards, MG Lau will perform the installation of our new trustees for the Aloha Chapter Scholarship Fund. The following new trustees will serve for a term of three years and may be re-elected to two successive three-year terms of office: LTCOL John Kim, USAF, Ret., COL Curtis Lee, USA, Ret., BG John Ma, USA, Ret., and COL Harold Okita, USA, Ret. Following the installation ceremony, we will have a presentation of USAA benefits and services by the USAA Representative for Hawaii, Guam and American Samoa, Joe Zettlemoyer, Command Sgt Major, U.S. Army, Pacific (USARPAC), Retired. We also gave a rousing Aloha to our faithful MOAA party attendees, Bob Frye, 95, and his wife, Louise, who make the trek every year all the way from Haleiwa. By the end of the party, the two large boxes for receiving the donations for the Toys for Tots Program, our charity for this year, were filled to overflowing. Following our luncheon, these gaily decorated boxes of toys were placed on display at the collection point in the foyer of the MARFORPAC Headquarters building. The suggestion that all attendees should arrive hungry proved to be good advice! The buffet was delicious and the No Shame policy for second trips through the line was observed by many of us. We enjoyed several rousing rounds of Christmas carols and Holiday songs accompanied by Rose Baysa at the keyboard, an ad hoc group of carolers, and our intrepid ukulele trio: Larry Enomoto, Norman Fujiwara and Mel Soong. Following the festivities, all assembled were asked if they had enjoyed the Luncheon format for our annual party. As a result of your unanimous approval, your Programs Committee has reserved the Sunset Lanai for next year's event; you may now mark those new calendars for our Thursday, 11 December 2014, Christmas Luncheon! Your Program Committee thanks you for your enthusiastic support of our meetings and activities throughout 2013; we wish you all a Very Happy New Year, and hope to see more of you participating in our events for 2014! 4 Page 4 Nā Leo O Nā Koa No. 15, January 2014 MOAA 2013 Christmas Party Seventy-five Aloha and Hawaii State Chapter members, spouses and guests gathered at the Hickam Officers Club, JBPHH, on Saturday evening, 14 December, for a delicious meal, fun and fellowship. After an hour of meeting and greeting our new and old friends, we assembled at ten candlelit tables, pledged Allegiance to the Flag, and then enjoyed a fabulous feast of filet mignon, vegetable medley and garlic mashed potatoes. Dessert was a decadent chocolate volcano cake. During our meal we were serenaded by the piano artistry of Rene Paulo. He is known as "Hawaii's Favorite and Most Famous Pianist" and has been invited repeatedly to perform in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. Paulo has played with famous artists like Alfred Apaka, Hilo Hattie and Don Ho. He mostly played classic Christmas melodies for our pleasant background music. After dinner Rene and his son and daughter led the group in a spirited Hawaiian version of 12 Days of Christmas. Jack Bohman portrayed the mynah bird in one papaya tree and Helene Webster was assigned the role of two coconuts; the diners at each of the ten tables hilariously acted out in sequence the remaining ten days of Christmas. Curtis, of course, couldn t leave without sharing one of his well-told jokes that had everyone almost falling off their chairs in laughter.

8 Page 8 Nā Leo O Nā Koa No. 15, January 2014 December Golf Report I was pleasantly surprised to receive so many positive responses to my sign-up notice; I felt that with the holidays taking so much of our time, that the response to our last golf outing of 2013 on 27 December at the Navy/ Norm Fujiwara Marine Golf Course would be sparse. How wrong I was! Positive responses were coming in at about the ratio of 5 ayes for 1 nay, a golf coordinator's glorified moment. We did have some high-water marks among people signing up. First, some blue bloods from Washington joined us no, not the vacationing passenger of Air Force One who loves to golf in Hawaii but a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee Staff, Debra Wada, and her husband, Michael, and Clifton Ching, Director, Office of Naval Research, Pacific, who were the guests of member MG Bob Lee, USA, Ret. Also playing were two members of the Wounded Warriors of Kaneohe, Sgt Jeremiah Koel, and retired GySgt Patrick Tyrrell. We had a new record of guests playing, a total of 13 guest players. In the stars department we had 2 MGs and 2 BGs. Following our normal format, the first group teed off with Kelly Lau leading the pack with his fellow players Joel Maimon, and two of John Kim's guests, Dennis Blake and Ken Lacy; they were followed by Bob Lee, his son Bryan Lee, and guests Debra Wada and husband Michael and Clifton Ching; they were followed by Mert Agena, John Ma, Mel Soong and Ken Munechika; close behind in the fourth group were Leroy Perry, Gerald Bruce, and Sgt. Koel; leading the fifth group was Joe Kuroda with Ira Tagawa and GySgt Patrick Tyrell; they were followed by Ken Yamada, his guests Dennis Kawano, Norris and Evelyn Atsumi; next to the tail end were Myron Brumaghin and three of his guests; bringing up the rear were Curtis Lee, Norm Fujiwara with his gang of Nelson Fujiwara and Kerri Fujiwara. After tabulating all scores and the players drew their numbers to determine their "blind" partners for the mega jackpot, in third place John Ma and Myron Brumaghin; in second place ahead by 8 strokes were the partners of Gerald Bruce and Ken Munechika; and our grand champions and the winners of the mega jackpot were Curtis Lee and Bob Lee. Our congratulations to all the winners and to us non-winners, us diehard contributors, Mahalo. Now for our thought of the day, "The only thing wrong with doing nothing is that you never know when you're finished." We will open our 2014 golf season on Friday, 31 January, at Barbers Point Golf Course. VA ID Card continued from Page 5 front of the card. Since 2011, the VA hasn t issued ID cards with those two numbers, but that hasn t made the information much safer. Here s why: The information on the barcode on your card can be read by apps easily available online. App stands for application, a mini-program that gets installed in a cell phone, like software in a computer. With a phone app scanner held near the card, the Social Security number will pop up. The VA has known about this since at least 2011, when it issued an online alert. (Were you notified of the risks of the card?) A message on the VA website says, Some bar code readers, including those available as applications on cell phones, can scan the bar code on the front of the card and reveal the veteran s Social Security number. New VA ID cards will be coming out in Call your local medical center and inquire about getting one of the new cards as soon as they come out. MOAA.org
