2 JBSAMILITARY& FAMILY READINESS SERVICES The Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Military & Family Readiness Centers (M&FRC) are dedicated to providing a full range of quality programs and services that promote selfreliance, mission readiness, resiliency and ease adaptation into the military way of life. We offer a variety of classes, trainings, and workshops that promote, educate, and facilitate readiness and resiliency: Air Force Aid Society Armed Forces Action Plan Army Emergency Relief Military Family Team Building Casualty Assistance Deployment Readiness Employment & Career Development Exceptional Family Member Program Financial Readiness Heart Link Hearts Apart Information & Referral Unit Family Readiness Military & Family Life Counselors Personal & Family Life Relocation Services Resiliency Training School Liaison Services Survivor Benefit Services Transition Assistance Program Volunteer Opportunities Warriors in Transition Regardless of specific duty station location, patrons assigned to JBSA can attend trainings and utilize the services offered at all three locations. RELOCATION ASSISTANCE JBSAFSH M&FRC, Bldg (210) Reduce or eliminate problems arising due to frequent moves with specialized services such as: individual or group counseling; sponsorship and prearrival information; mandatory overseas briefings and postmove orientations; lending closet; and immigration services. LENDING CLOSET MondayFriday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed 1st & 3rd Thursday 14 p.m. The Lending Closet loans basic household goods while yours are in transit; kitchen equipment, high chairs, sleeping mats, irons and more. Permanent party, students, TDY, retirees and civilians may borrow items up to 30 days. Please bring a copy of your orders. NEWCOMER S ORIENTATION Dec 1, 15 & Jan 5, 19 8 a.m. to Noon This is a mandatory inprocessing briefing for all military and civilian personnel newly assigned to JBSA, family members are also encouraged to attend. Service members must coordinate attendance with their Unit Personnel. All patrons must be signed in and seated by 7:50 a.m. This is more than a traditional inprocessing briefing. Representatives from agencies throughout the community will be onsite to share information with patrons. RELOCATION & OVERSEAS ORIENTATION Dec 13 & Jan a.m./ 23 p.m. Mandatory for personnel E5 and below; topics covered include: entitlement, shipment of household goods, emotional stressors of relocation, employment, and education. Only one session is needed. SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION TRAINING Dec 20 & Jan p.m. Completion of the Electronic Sponsorship Application & Training (esat) is mandatory for all military sponsors and is available online at A Relocation specialist can assist with questions or provide clarification. TRAILS & TALES GUIDED TOUR Jan a.m. Located in the heart of San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston houses the largest collection of historic buildings in the Department of Defense! Join us for a guided tour and learn about its rich history. Seating is limited, registration required. FINANCIAL READINESS JBSAFSH M&FRC, Bldg (210) Financial Readiness can assist with developing an individual plan to achieve financial goals. Specialized services include money management, credit and financial planning, insurance and consumer issues, and information on emergency assistance. Participants must bring a current LES, spouse s income information (if applicable), a list of monthly expenses, and debt information (total balance owed, monthly payment, and Annual Percent Rate). BLENDED RETIREMENT 101 Dec a.m. The new military retirement system goes into effect Jan. 1, Learn who it applies to and how it differs from the legacy retirement pension. Additional training available online at JKO. CREDIT MANAGEMENT Jan a.m. Discover how to establish credit and use credit wisely while understanding the associated costs. Review what a credit score consists of and how to improve it. CAR BUYING Jan a.m. Review topics associated with purchasing a new or used car, avoid sales traps, dealer scams, and predatory lending. THRIFT SAVINGS PLAN (TSP) Jan p.m. Are you taking full advantage of your TSP? Become familiar with contribution limits, taxdeferred investments, rates of return, and learn what options are available after separating from the military or civilian service. TILL DEBT DO US PART Jan p.m. Money and marriage is an age old problem and one of the leading causes of stress in a relationship. From different money management styles to conflicting values, income and more. Review the essentials of establishing financial stability as a couple, in addition to reviewing methods to help reach your financial goals. 10 BASIC MONEY RULE$ Jan a.m. Review 10 basic principles that are essential in building a strong financial foundation. Explore reasons some succeed in achieving wealth, individual things of value, and how they play a significant role in money management. Review services offered by M&FRC, Texas Veterans Commission, Workforce Solutions, Civilian Personnel Advisory, as well as priority placement opportunities. GENERAL RESUME Jan a.m. Learn about the different resume formats and which one to use when writing a nonfederal resume. Get tips on how to effectively write summary statements, employment history, and more. Improve your computer skills with free, handson, instructorled training. Open to all skill levels. TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP)/ SOLDIER FOR LIFE JBSAFSH Soldier for Life, Bldg. 2264, Ste (210) TAP provides counseling and job assistance to service members preparing to leave the federal service. Services include: preseparation counseling, benefits, job search training, selfassessment tools, resume review, job analyzer software, and referral to service providers. PRESEPARATION COUNSELING Dec 5, 19 & Jan 9, 23 9 a.m. to Noon Airmen, Sailors, and Marines planning to separate or retire from the federal service must attend this mandatory counseling. Appointments may be scheduled up to 24months before retirement date or 12months prior to separation. Training is held at M&FRC, Bldg To register, call TuesdayFriday 8:3011:30 a.m. Soldiers planning to separate from the military must attend this mandatory counseling. Appointments may be scheduled up to 24months prior to retirement or 18months prior to your separation date. Facilitated by Soldier for Life, bldg TRANSITION GOALS, PLANS, SUCCESS (GPS) Dec 48*, 1115, Jan 812, 2226*, and Jan 29Feb 2 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A mandatory 5day workshop for all service members separating from the military. 6 JBSAFORT SAM HOUSTON of Labor, Veterans Administration, and M&FRC. This workshop is held in the basement of Bldg Prerequisite: PreSeparation Counseling. *Retirees only dates. ACCESSING HIGHER EDUCATION Dec 46 & a.m. to 4 p.m. This 3day track helps service members achieve academic success by preparing for college life and reentering school, and reviewing credit transfers, researching schools, financial aid assistance, vocational education counseling and more. This workshop is held at the Education Center, Bldg Prerequisite: Transition GPS. Dec a.m. to 4 p.m. Service members that already have a Bachelor s degree may attend an accelerated 2day workshop at the Education Center, Bldg Prerequisite: Transition GPS. BOOTS TO BUSINESS Jan a.m. to 4 p.m. A 2day entrepreneurial education workshop hosted by the Small Business Administration. Discuss the opportunities and challenges of business ownership; review steps for evaluating business concepts; foundational knowledge for developing a business plan; information on SBA resources available to help access startup capital; and additional technical assistance. Prerequisite: Transition GPS. MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) JBSAFSH M&FRC, Bldg (210) or Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others in addressing issues from deployment and reintegration, marriage and relationships, stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and other daily life issues. Consultations and trainings are anonymous, no records are kept. Afterhours and weekend appointments are available. Meetings can also be arranged offsite. Call to schedule an appointment. MILITARY CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP Dec 12 & Jan 9 9:3011:30 a.m. Caregivers have the opportunity ty to build a support network, share experiences, and information. This group meets at the Solider & Family Assistance Center (SFAC) Meeting Room. For more information, call (210) PERSONAL FINANCIAL COUNSELOR Personal Financial Counselors provide free financial counseling services to Service Members and their Families. Consultations are anonymous with no records kept. Some evening and weekend availability. To schedule a consultation, call (210) EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM JBSAFSH M&FRC, Bldg (210) EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program that assists service members and their families with special, physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual needs. EFMP works with military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated medical, educational, housing, community support, and personnel services. Call for details or to register. LUNCH N LEARN WITH EFMP Jan 10 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your lunch and join us for a new topic each month sharing helpful resources and ways to overcome challenges. Call to register. Supported Decision Making & Alternatives to Guardianship Join us for guest speaker, Brooke Kearney, a Community Education Coordinator from the ARC of San Antonio to gain a better understanding of adult guardianship, alternatives to adult guardianship, supported decision making, powers of attorney, representative payee and more. SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICE JBSAFSH Bldg. 2263, Room 107 (210) The School Liaison Office assists parents with children in grades K12. SLO can help with the transition between schools; provide information about local school systems, policies, programs and more. MENTOR TRAINING Dec 20 & Jan :30 a.m. Volunteer mentors spend time with young people to encourage positive choices and promote high selfesteem. After completion, participants are placed within a local public school. Facilitated by the SLO and Community in Schools. PCS ING WITH SCHOOL AGE YOUTH Jan 18 Noon to 1:30 p.m. Changing schools can be exceptionally hard on you and your children. Explore options to help with transferring your child to a new school and discuss topics like the different responses children may have when changing schools; enrollment processes; immunizations and records; placement and attendance; transcripts; special needs and more. Open to parents with children in grades K12. PERSONAL & FAMILY LIFE JBSAFSH M&FRC, Bldg (210) The Family Life Program assists in improving the quality of life for individuals and families. Classes provide knowledge and skills needed to develop and strengthen communication, promote healthy relationships, child safety, coping with life events, and realizing personal potential. Unit team building training is available by request. Call for class details or to register. HELPING US GROW SECURELY (HUGS) PLAYGROUP Tuesdays 10 a.m. to Noon Canceled: Dec 26 & Jan 1 A playgroup for infants and toddlers (up to age 5); open to parents and their children. The playgroup meets at the Middle School Teen Center, Bldg Registration is not required. MILITARY SPOUSE: WHAT IS YOUR MINDSET? Dec 1 10:30 a.m. to Noon Life can be full of frustrating, unfair situations or it can be full of change, growth, and experience. One thing is certain, we all struggle at some stage in our lives. 7 JBSAFORT SAM HOUSTON HOLIDAY STRESS MANAGEMENT Dec 4 23:30 p.m. For many the holiday season can take an emotional toll, making it peak season for stress and the blues. Review ways to prevent stress by identifying and recognizing signs and symptoms, define holiday expectations, and discuss stress management techniques and strategies. INFANT MASSAGE Dec 4, 11, 18 8:3011:30 a.m. This 3part series must be attended in order. Infant Massage helps normalize muscle tone, improve blood circulation, stimulate brain development, and improve sensory awareness. In addition, it may help with relieving discomfort from constipation, gas, and colic allowing babies (and parents) to sleep better. This workshop is held at the VRC, Bldg. 367, Stanley Rd. ANGER AWARENESS Dec p.m. Learn to identify expressions of anger, triggers, signals, and techniques that help manage anger. FAMILY MOVIE DAY Dec p.m. The Exceptional Family Member Program and the Family Life Program invite JBSA families to join us for a sensory friendly family movie. CAR SEAT 101 Jan 8 13 p.m. Review the basics of car seat installation and make sure your child is seated properly within their car seat. This class is required before attending the Safety Seat Clinic. ARMY FAP UNIT TRAINING Dec 20 & Jan a.m./13 p.m. Mandated Unit Family Advocacy Training (IAW AR60818) regarding domestic and child abuse identification, reporting, and prevention. Other topics include the Lautenberg amendment, restricted and unrestricted reporting and transitional compensation program. Seating is limited, call to reserve seats for your unit. This workshop is held at the VRC, Bldg. 367, Stanley Rd. Reservations will be accepted up to 2 weeks in advance. CONNECTING THROUGH COMMUNICATION Jan p.m. Learn communication and relationship building skills to help foster connection in relationships at home and in the workplace. This workshop is held at the VRC, Bldg. 367, Stanley Rd. BRINGING BABY HOME Jan 18 & 25 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This 2part series must be attended in order. Knowing what to expect will help ease the overwhelming feeling of preparing for your newborn baby s homecoming. Both parents are encouraged to attend. PRESEPARATION & RETIREMENT COUNSELING Dec 13, 27 & Jan 3, 17, 24, 31 Noon to 3 p.m. This mandatory briefing is required for all service members that are separating or retiring from the military, and is required before attending the Transition GPS workshop. Appointments may be scheduled up to 24months prior to retirement or up to 12months prior to separation. TRANSITION GOALS, PLANS, SUCCESS (GPS) Dec48 & Jan a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This 5day workshop is mandatory for all service members separating from the military. The GPS is facilitated by the Department of Labor, Veterans Administration, and M&FRC. Spouses welcomed. Prerequisite: PreSeparation. VA STAND ALONE WORKSHOP Dec 1 & Jan 30 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those exempt from the mandatory 5day TAP GPS Workshop must attend a Veterans Administration standalone workshop. Topics covered include critical VA programs and services ranging from general benefits information, disability compensation, and GI Bill benefit. Prerequisite: Pre Separation. ACCESSING HIGHER EDUCATION Dec 1112 & Jan a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This 2day track helps service members in pursuit of higher education. Review resources to help with choosing a degree, credit transfers, financial assistance, compare schools and institutes, vocational education counseling and more. CAREER TECHNICAL TRAINING Jan 45 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn about civilian careers that require a license or certificate, identify schools and accredited institutions, financial aid, VA benefits, apprenticeships and more. MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) JBSARAN M&FRC, Bldg. 693 (210) or Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others address deployment and reintegration issues; marriage, relationship and family issues; stress and anxiety; depression, grief and loss; and daily life issues. CASUALTY ASSISTANCE & SURVIVOR BENEFITS JBSARAN M&FRC, Bldg. 693 (210) or The Casualty Assistance and Survivor Benefits Plan Offices provide dignified and humane casualty notification; efficient, thorough, and compassionate followup assistance to the nextofkin for as long as needed. Call to sign up or for details. BUNDLES FOR BABIES Dec 1 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Active duty expecting parents assigned to JBSARandolph are encouraged to attend. Information will be provided on financial planning from conception to college, support programs offered within the community, and parenting skills. At the end of the class, active duty and active duty spouses in the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard will receive a free gift, courtesy of the Air Force Aid Society. U.S. AIR FORCE KEY SPOUSE KEY SPOUSE REFRESHER Dec a.m. This training is open to Key Spouses and Key Spouse Mentors who have completed the mandatory initial training from their previous location, and would like a review of the program and local resources. VOLUNTEER SERVICES JBSARAN M&FRC, Bldg. 693 (210) Volunteer Services provide volunteers with opportunities based on interest and agency needs. Volunteers support the military in a variety of capacities such as: youth coaches, office assistants, program assistants, and more. Call to sign up or for information. HOW TO PREPARE A VOLUNTEER AWARD NOMINATION PACKAGE Jan a.m. Review the new form and learn how to prepare and submit an effective nomination package identifying a volunteer for recognition during the 2018 JBSA Volunteer Awards Ceremony. The ceremony honors all volunteers for their effort and time spent serving the military community. It also recognizes those who perform outstanding volunteer community service of a sustained, direct and consequential nature. Nomination packages should be submitted no later than February 23. DEPLOYMENT READINESS JBSARAN M&FRC, Bldg. 693 (210) Deployment readiness helps service members and their families prepare for deployments, provides access to support through courses, support groups, and prepares them for unique challenges that they face when returning. Registration is required. POSTDEPLOYMENT: REINTEGRATION Tuesdays 89 a.m. All military members returning from a deployment are required to attend this briefing. This training reviews reintegration into home life and provides resources to deal with associated stressors. Military spouses are encouraged to attend. PERSONAL & FAMILY READINESS BRIEFING Dec 5, 19 & Jan 2, 16, a.m. All military members scheduled to deploy, go TDY longer than 30 days or on a remote assignment are required to attend this briefing.
