The Ship s Bell Placer County Council, Navy League of The United States Auburn, California On April 22 nd, Don and Mona Anderson joined me in attending the California Maritime Commissioning Ceremony. I was honored to present the John Paul Jones Award, a beautiful Navy sword with gold knot, to Ensign Garrett Clay. Garrett has been one of our Midshipmen of the Month award recipients, and he is headed to Pensacola to be a student Naval Flight Officer. Congratulations to all of the graduates, and especially to Ensign Clay and the rest of his fellow naval officers! On April 29 th, Chuck Peterson represented the Council at the Commissioning Ceremony for the dedication of the Randy Goodman Training Ship of the US Naval League Cadet Corps attached to our Yuba Sutter Matthew Axelson Division of the Sea Cadets. The Training Ship is named for Captain Randy Goodman, United States Navy retired, a former Navy Seal and Group Commander. According to Chuck it was an outstanding event, especially because Captain Goodman was present for the ceremony, giving remarks, inspecting the troops, and participating in the promotion of some of the cadets. Congratulations Training Ship Randy Goodman! May 4 th was the Big Day of Giving, and this is the first year that our Council has participated in this huge fund-raising event. I am delighted to report that we raised $1300 which will be used to support our Sea Cadet Scholarship Fund. Thank you Alicia Wilbur for being our Team Captain, and to those who participated, thank you so much for your generous donations! Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation s service. On Monday, May 29 th we will participate with our local veteran s organizations in paying tribute to those who have paid the ultimate price to defend the United States and the principles upon which America was founded. The main ceremony will take place at 9:00 AM at the War Memorial at the New Auburn Cemetery. I will be the MC, Luther Burbank High School Navy Junior May/June, 2017 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE 1 ROTC will provide a Color Guard, Stacey Anderson will sing the National Anthem, our Chaplain Bruce Lundberg will offer the invocation and benediction, members Mike Holmes and his brother Jim will say a few words, Don Roby will play the bagpipes during the wreath laying, and there will be a release of beautiful white doves, a rifle salute, and Eagle Scout Joseph Hass will play TAPS. Our Council always provides a wreath made by O Shea s Florist, and flowers for the Gold Star family members in attendance. I hope you will join me on this important day to show our respect for all of our fallen service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom. Following the primary ceremony, brief ceremonies with a wreath-laying and the rendering of honors will follow at the Old Auburn Cemetery (170 Fulweiler, Auburn) at 10:00 AM, the Newcastle Cemetery (850 Taylor Rd, Newcastle) at 11:00 and the Maidu Indian Burial Ground (corner of Maidu Rd and Wildwood Dr in Auburn) at Noon. As a reminder, I must have an accurate head count for our caterer so she will know how many meals to prepare for our monthly dinner meeting. We will continue to have our telephone tree members call you to find out if you will be attending. We understand that your circumstances may change after you have been called, so please call me at if you must cancel your dinner reservation (or wish to attend at the last moment)!! If you say you will attend, but fail to show up, we still have to pay for your dinner. I try to keep the calling lists up to date, so if your telephone number changes, or you are not being called, and you want to attend, please let me know that as well. As always, let us remember the courageous men and women of our Sea Services who put their lives in harm s way every day, whether at home or abroad, in defense of our freedom. I hope you enjoy a happy and healthy spring! Bonnie Potter

Thank you from Luther Burbank Navy JROTC; "The Titan Battalion" Placer County Navy League, Thank you so much for your generous donation to the Luther Burbank Navy JROTC; "The Titan Battalion." Your donations make a significant and positive impact on our ability to provide outstanding cadet leadership training. We are on track to assist over 50 cadets in attending various leadership camps this summer, many of these camps are very expensive and are located out of state. However, the training and leadership opportunities gained from these camps is priceless for our cadets. We are the current Northern California Drill Champions plus we are ranked #2 on the entire West Coast. Summer leadership camps plus intense local training have helped us create truly outstanding cadet leaders. Please see our attached thank you letter and give our deepest thanks to all members of the Placer County Navy League. Also, the link below is a shared drive with some recent photos of cadet events. Feel free to download these pictures for your newsletter. Warm Regards, Tom 3
A Big Thank you for all those who donated to The Placer county council Navy League The Navy League Placer County Council would like to thank all of those who contributed to the Big Day of Giving. This was our first time being part of this great fundraiser event and we did really well. The Navy League was one out of 599 organizations that participated in this wonderful event. There was 40,295 donations which amounted to $7,173,989. The Navy League Placer County Council made a total of $1, We plan on joining this event next year. 4
Touch of Home received a phone call from a local lady whose son, Kellen, turned 5 years old on May 3, 2017 (this is not a typo, that's FIVE years old.) Instead of gifts to him, Kellen wanted to honor our troops and chose instead of birthday gifts from his friends, to collect donations for Touch of Home to send to our troops. Thank you to Kellen and all his friends who made this possible. Phelps Hobart, Bonnie, Mona, and Don 5

Your Board of Directors From the May 11, 2017 UNFINISHED BUSINESS Alicia Wilbur reported BigDOG brought in over $7 million for the 599 organizations participating. We received $1,311.80, not all from members. Lisa Bloom and Phelps Hobart, for instance, contributed. Aaron Lonquist thought some of the other donners might be parents of our Sea Cadets. We will participate again next year. Potter did not attend the May Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce last week. She presented the chamber s request for donations to defray the cost of the July 4 th fees to use the fairgrounds and hold the annual fireworks display. Holmes moved, D. Anderson seconded and it was passed that we donate $ to the chamber toward that end Potter has submitted our application and check to the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce and we are officially members. Potter submitted our Annual Report on March 15. A copy is in the Minute Book. Potter reported plans for Memorial Day ceremonies proceed and passed out copies of the New Auburn Cemetery celebration s schedule. A copy is in the Minute Book. Unfortunately, the Auburn Winds will not be able to play before that ceremony begins, as too many of their members will be on vacation. The remains of a local WWII Veteran have recently been identified from a mass burial, and he will be buried in New Auburn Cemetery on Friday, May 26. With his family s approval, he will be remembered and honored during the ceremony. Our spot on the Veterans Advisory Council hasn t been filled. Potter will ask Chuck Peterson if he is interested in doing so. If not, she will present it to the general membership for volunteers. COMMITTEE REPORTS Membership and Retention Potter received an updated roster from national but there are still problems with it. Several members listed as being lapsed will be followed up on: Lonquist will check with Don Herkel, Holms with LaMalfa and Ruffalo. No retention figures are being given. Sea Cadets and NJROTC Longuist reported Chuck Peterson attended the Matthew Axelson commissioning of the training ship Randall Goodman. There are several issues pending with the Sacramento Unit: a meeting between D. Anderson, Lonquist Curtis Gant and the Roseville Fairground management to resolve a friction between the unit and the fairgrounds maintenance crew; a meeting between Steve Nash, Potter, Lonquist and Gant to assure several past issues do not arise again; and hopefully some resolution to Gant s frustrations, especially over an unrealistic requirement concerning an upcoming activity at Alameda, which will very much inconvenience Sacramento Unit s parents. Lonquist plans to attend Luther Burbank s NJROTC awards ceremonies later this month. Legislative Affairs Holmes reported he visited Feinstein s, Harris, McClintock s, LaMalfa s and Matsui s offices while in D.C., sharing information about our support for the sea services Telephone Tree Potter reported all is going smoothly. Fallon Clinic D. Anderson reported he and M. Anderson will go to Fallon on May 16, attend a morning awards ceremony at Fallon Clinic on May 17, have a tour of the base, then attend the Carson City Council meeting in the evening. It is unfortunate that Lou Conter will not be able to accompany them, as he was scheduled to be the guest speaker at Carson City and a special guest at Fallon. Potter mentioned Janice Cleckley been chosen as Flag Aid to Vice Admiral Bono and will be leaving her Fallon post. Hall Board Potter reported the next meeting will be in December. USS McCampbell Potter reported nothing new. Touch of Home Potter reported on the facebook story of a 5-year-old boy who wanted only gifts for Touch for his birthday. There will be more about this in the Bell. STEM D. Anderson reported Kristen Beck, Curriculum Coordinator of the Auburn Union School District, is setting up a ceremony for the STEM committee s check presentation to E. V Cain. G. Wilbur suggested that the local students who participate in the Sea Perch STEM program be invited to attend one of our meetings and show us their projects. Programs Potter reported for Mike Holmes the NOSC CO will visit in February. D. Anderson asked if Holmes had arranged the meeting at Don Whitaker s Ceronix but Potter didn t know. Ships Bell Alicia Wilbur reported computer problems but the next Bell is coming along. Website and Social Media Potter reported she continues to keep the site current. REVIEW OF DUE DATES Our tax filings are ready to go by the May 15 deadline. The PO Box payment is due and will be paid. Our application for the July 4 Parade will be filled out and submitted. NEW BUSINESS The request for support of the July 4 th events was discussed previously. For the third year in a row, our council has received national s Outstanding Council award. Potter will attend the national convention awards luncheon and accept it. The celebration in Newcastle was discussed and it was decided we will not participate with a booth but several of us will attend. Copies of the paperwork are in the Minute Book as a heads-up for next year. ANNOUNCEMENTS The Legion will hold a fund-raiser dinner on June and Potter will have tickets. Holmes announced a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Forgotten Soldier garden on May 25. 8
