1 119 Oakwood Dr., Glastonbury, CT Phone (860) Fax (860) VOLUME XXXIV, NO. 1 RICHARD J. HURLEY, President JOSEPH A. OWENS, Editor JANUARY 2002 Dedication May 5 Of Fire Memorial The dedication of the Firefighters Memorial in Windsor Locks will take place Sunday, May 5, according to Ernie Herrick, chairman of the committee which conceived the project and raised the necessary funds. Originally, the committee had thought the event could be held last fall, but the site on the grounds of the Fire Training Academy had not been prepared in time. Also, members of the panel believed the additional time could be used to compile the names of Connecticut firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. Mr. Herrick said May 5 was selected because it is the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. Florian was an officer in the Roman Army. When Emperor Diocletian, supported by 40 soldiers, ordered him to enforce the Emperor s anti- Christian laws, Florian refused and proudly proclaimed his Christianity. He was sentenced to death. (continued on page 4) Hurley to Lead Club Club s Supporters, Praised At Dinner Speaking at the annual dinner Oct. 12 at La Renaissance, Msgr. Joseph A. Devine reminded members and their guests that The Hundred Club has long been aware of the dangers faced by members of the protective services. Msgr. Devine underscored the fact that the organization has been aiding families of Connecticut s law enforcers, firefighters and correction officers who lost their lives in the line of duty since He recalled that following the murder of a young Hartford police officer, Harvey R. Young, in 1967 that Anthony Ustjanauskas, a businessman in the Insurance City, with the aid of others, founded the club. The donation to Officer Young s widow was $1,000. The originators of the club, Msgr. Devine asserted, were (continued on page 2) Dinner Photos: Page 3 Hails Men, Women In Public Safety A subdued atmosphere prevailed at The Hundred Club s annual dinner meeting Oct. 12 at La Renaissance in East Windsor. The response of members of the public safety services to the terrorists attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 prompted Richard J. Hurley, the incoming president, to ask, Where do we get such heroic and dedicated men and women? We, the American people, are lucky to have them. Earlier, Managing Director William E. Sydenham, Jr. declared, We grieve with the families of the public safety workers in New York City. Truly, they are heroes because they place care and concern for others above their own lives. He said that Americans are united in the effort to rid the world of terrorists because they are united and proud to be patriotic. (continued on page 4) Golf Tourneys July 31 The Hundred Club will again conduct two separate golf tournaments on the same day. The date for the events this year is Wednesday, July 31. The tournaments will be played at Tunxis Plantation Country Club, Farmington and will be followed by a dinner at which awards will be presented. Additional details and the application form will appear in a future issue of The Hundred Call. Continuing its strong support of The Hundred Club, the Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman Foundation, Inc. has provided the club with another generous grant. Hoffman Foundation President Doris C. Chaho, second from the left, presented the check to club President James J. Dolan in December. Also present were, far left, Public Safety Commissioner Arthur L. Spada; Dr. Bahij Chaho, foundation vice president, and William E. Sydenham, Jr., managing director of The Hundred Club. The Hoffman Foundation presented the club with grants in 1997 and During the traditional ceremony outgoing President James J. Dolan presented his successor, Richard J. Hurley, with the gavel used by the presiding officer during meetings of the club s officials.

2 PAGE 2 THE HUNDRED CALL JANUARY 2002 Firefighter s Emotional Talk Time At Ground Zero Changed His Outlook In the 34-year history of The Hundred Club no speaker held the attention of an audience in a comparable way. Hartford Deputy Fire Chief Daniel C. Nolan, overcoming his personal emotion, shared his experience at Ground Zero in New York City and talked about what it means to be a firefighter. The talk by Chief Nolan at the club s annual dinner meeting Oct. 12 at La Renaissance in East Windsor will not be soon forgotten by the men and women who listened with rapt attention. Chief Nolan was among the early volunteers at the site of The World Trade Center. I felt trapped in a paradox. I wanted desperately to help my fellow firefighters, but yet it was difficult to witness the death and destruction. Strong, brave men were crying openly. Some were in shock. Chief Nolan I wanted to comfort them. But, I couldn t tell them everything would be all right, said this tall dark-haired young man. The firefighters, who were searching through the massive mountains of rubble, he explained, were desperately holding onto a glimmer of hope that their comrades were alive and could be rescued. Back through the corridors of time firefighters have been admired for their courage in time of tragedies, a fact not lost on Chief Nolan, a veteran of 18 years of service. But, as he pointed out, they are human and vulnerable to pain and suffering. I m not asking anyone to feel sorry for us. I m lucky to be a firefighter. Since I was three or four years old, this is what I wanted to do. My father was a deputy chief. Often he took me and my brother, John, to the firehouse and to various department activities. At an early age I saw firefighters were one big family. I m honored that I m a member of that family. While in elementary school young Dan Nolan, along with other pupils, was asked, What does your father do? He would promptly answer, He is a firefighter. When, as a rookie in the Hartford Department, Firefighter Nolan helped fight a structure fire, he was reluctant to wash off the smell of fire soot. I wanted to say to my friends, Look at me. I fought a fire today. The downside to the profession, he explained, is that to perform a heroic deed, a tragedy must occur. I have witnessed the loss of life and property. I have seen the agony and fears of good people. But nothing in my career can be compared to what I saw at the World Trade Center. I like to think that I can handle pressure. But the scenes at Ground Zero will be burned in my memory for the rest of my life. My time there has changed my life. I no longer strive for the things I used to want and need. I now appreciate what I have, such as my family, my friends and my life. I will strive to build on these gifts that I have taken for granted for far too long. Chief Nolan said he will always pray for the victims and their families. I am especially saddened by the loss of firefighters, although I personally did not know any of them. People who know firefighters understand that we are more than co-workers. We eat together, we sleep together and we sometimes argue with one another. And when that bell rings we will risk our lives for one another. I now regrettably believe that I have seen it all. I take comfort in the thought that these firefighters perished in the line of duty. I do not know of a more honorable way for a firefighter to die. In conclusion, Chief Nolan said, I am still delighted to be a firefighter. When I witness the appreciation of the people we serve, the smiles from the worshipping young children and think of the brotherhood of our profession, all this reinforces my decision made as a child. And, may I ask, the next time you see a firefighter, simply say, Thanks. Impressed by the sincerity of the man and deeply touched by his words, members of the audience afforded Chief Nolan a sustained standing ovation. PAST PRESIDENTS Eight past presidents of The Hundred Club were present at the annual dinner Oct. 12 at La Renaissance in East Windsor. The former leaders in attendance were André L. Charbonneau, Peter H. Guerra, J. Stewart Johnston, John J. King, James R. McCavanaugh, David G. Thornton, Angelo Tomasso, Jr., and Paul A. Young. Past presidents serve on the Board of Directors. SUPPORTERS (continued from page 1) men of vision, men with special concern for the men and women who protect lives and property. A member of that small group, Msgr. Devine noted, is still active in our wonderful organization. I speak of Angelo Tomasso. He praised Mr. Tomasso, a past president, for continuing to be active as a director. Paying tribute to two governors, who have passed on, John N. Dempsey and Ella T. Grasso, Msgr. Devine recalled that Mr. Dempsey not only attended and spoke at several of the Msgr. Devine club s dinners but also was present at the golf tournaments. He didn t play golf so he would drive a golf cart around the course and provide the golfers with soft drinks. Mrs. Grasso, he observed, made her last public appearance at the club s dinner in She died a few months later. Gov. (Ret.) Bill O Neill and Lt. Gov. (Ret.) Joe Fauliso, who were in the audience, were also praised for their long and strong support of the club. In conclusion Msgr. Devine said that families of the club s Fallen Heroes are not forgotten; that they are remembered on holidays and other special occasions. The Club With A Heart is also the club with a memory, he declared. Chief Willis Dies A longtime supporter of The Hundred Club, Chief Clifford J. Willis of New Britain died Nov. 24. He was 77 years old. Mr. Willis was the first African American chief of the New Britain Dept. He became a supernumerary officer in He rose through the ranks and is credited with single-handedly forming the Community Relations Division without the benefit of a cruiser, radio, budget or an office. Following service in Chief Willis the European Theatre in World War II with General Patton s Red Ball Express, he attended Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). He left CCSU to study at New Haven College where he earned a B.S. and later a Master s Degree in Criminal Justice. Throughout his adult life Mr. Willis was active in several local, state and national organizations. Two years ago a scholarship was established in his name at CCSU. Mr. Willis leaves his wife, Allenstine Sparks Willis, their three children and their spouses and several grandchildren.

HURLEY TO LEAD CLUB (continued from page 1) With those words he called on Gail Fenn Lumpkin and her orchestra to perform America The Beautiful. The outgoing president, James J. Dolan, said that during the past year he had been privileged to work with a tremendous group of people and was honored to serve as the club s leader. In his message to members, Mr. Dolan took note of the outpouring of support for the families of the firefighters, police and other public servants who lost their lives in the tragedy at the World Trade Center. We in The Hundred Club have seen our country embrace and expand what has been our core belief and practice in Connecticut for more than three decades. Through the years, we have been proud to be there and help share the burden, he said. Department of Correction Commissioner John J. Armstrong, in brief remarks, said, I m here to say Thank You to members of The Hundred Club for all that you have done. Mr. Armstrong said the organization recognizes the sacrifices made by public safety personnel and that these men and women are fortunate to have The Hundred Club. The existence of the club, he maintained was never more important than it is today. Peter H. Guerra, a past president, served as master of ceremonies. The presentation of the colors was carried out by delegations from the State Police and the Waterbury Fire Dept. Also participating were members of the State Police Pipes And Drums Corps. Benediction was offered by Rev. Michael Dolan of Newington, the son of the outgoing president. FATHERS AND SONS Two sons of past presidents are currently serving on the Board of Directors. André K. Charbonneau, son of André L. Charbonneau was named to the panel in 2001 and Thomas Guerra, son of Peter H. Guerra, became a member this year. The elder Charbonneau was president in 2000 and Mr. Guerra in FIRE MEMORIAL (continued from page 1) According to the legend, Florian stood on his funeral pyre and challenged the soldiers to light it. He said he would climb to heaven on the flames. Convinced that Florian would fulfill his promise, the executioners drowned him in the Enns River in the year 304 A.D. In 1955 Rev. Francis S. O Neill, the Catholic chaplain of the Hartford Fire Dept. designed the St. Florian medal which is carried by firefighters throughout the country. Mr. Herrick said that he and other members of the committee have visited the Adams Granite Co. in Barre, St. Florian VT and inspected the polished block of black granite on which the images of four firefighters battling a blaze have been engraved. The original artwork for this centerpiece of the memorial was created by Lt. Paul Walsh of the New Britain Fire Dept. The committee is continuing to accept $100 donations for the bricks in the patio which will be shaped in the form of a Maltese Cross, the universal symbol of the firefighting service. SGT. DINGWALL HONORED A section of Route I-91 between Meriden and Cromwell has been named in honor of Sgt. George Dingwall of the Middletown Police Dept. Sgt. Dingwall lost his life in the line of duty Jan. 28, Senator Biagio Ciotto of Wethersfield and Rep. Thomas Bozek of New Britain sponsored the legislation. Earlier, a thoroughfare in Middletown between Main Street and DeKoven Drive was dedicated as Dingwall Drive.
