1 SAS Special Show Coverage Day 1 Defense Daily Boeing s Unmanned Sub Experimenting With New Batteries By Mike McCarthy ST. LOUIS--Boeing [BA] plans to test improved lithium batteries later this year on an unmanned submarine it believes could eventually fit into the Navy s missions of persistent presence and countering anti-area access denial threats, according to the company s executive in charge of the program. The sub known as Echo Ranger, and developed by Boeing s Phantom Works outfit for advanced projects, will be tested off California s Catalina Island in July to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new lithium batteries and to experiment with payloads, said Mark Kosko, the program manager for unmanned underwater systems. The Navy has identified countering anti-area access denial (A2AD) as a top priority as it plans to expand its presence in the Asia-Pacific region under the Obama s administration new global posture strategy unveiled in January. Kosko said a key challenge in developing the autonomous undersea system is coming up with adequate sources of energy to power Echo Ranger and his team is looking at solutions ranging from batteries to diesel engines that could also recharge batteries. Finding sufficient energy is hard, he Echo Ranger Photo Provided Courtesy of Boeing Echo Ranger Photo Provided Courtesy of Boeing told Defense Daily. Kosko said another challenge is developing its acoustics and navigation capabilities so the sub is better able to avoid running into surface craft or ships. Echo Ranger was first envisioned as a platform for surveying commercial oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico, but the company shifted the focus to military applications about seven years ago. Echo Ranger is 18.5 feet long and weighs 10,700 pounds. It is designed to reach depths of 10,000 feet and travel at a maximum speed of 6 knots. n Boeing Expects Steady JDAM Line ST. LOUIS--Boeing [BA] expects production of the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) to remain relatively stable despite the end of the war in Iraq and the upcoming withdrawal from Afghanistan, a company official said. The Boeing s factory for the JDAM guidance kit currently produces about 42 JDAMs daily, with work split between JDAMS and Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs). Kristin Robertson, Boeing s director for Direct Attack Munitions, said the production facility has the flexibility to adapt to changes in the numbers of JDAMs ordered by the Pentagon. Currently it s fairly stable. Beyond that, nobody can predict, Robertson said. JDAMs are among the most widely used airborne munitions by the U.S. military and were prominently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Since JDAMs came on-line in 1998, Boeing has sold more than 230,000 GPS guidance kits to the Pentagon and U.S. allies. JDAM Photo Courtesy of Boeing The kits are attached to dumb munitions so they can be precisely guided to ground targets by satellite furnished coordinates, effectively making them smart. The Pentagon plans to buy 5,000 guidance kits in 2012 for a price tag of $111 million, keeping pace with the 12,500 over three orders in 2011 at a combined cost of $306 million. Robertson emphasized the Pentagon has no plans to stop producing JDAMs, noting that the government recently issued a sources sought notification that will add five more production runs to the current plans, the equivalent of about five years of work. 4 4 Defense Daily April 16, 2012 Robertson said international sales for JDAMs, which features 500- and 2,000-pound versions, will also help keep production going, and the company is also developing a new version of JDAM with wing kits that will effectively triple the range of the bombs once dropped to 40 miles. Australia has been committed to the 500-pound extended range JDAM, while a second country she would not name has shown interest in the larger extended-range munitions. n Partnering With Foreign Industries Key For F/A-18s, Boeing Says By Mike McCarthy ST. LOUIS--Partnering with industries in foreign countries to develop, and possibly build, components for the F/A-18 Super Hornet is a key aspect of Boeing s [BA] plan to market the aircraft internationally as the aerospace firm approaches completion of sales to the U.S. Navy, a company executive recently said. Looking for opportunities to work with indigenous companies in those countries plays into Boeing s international roadmap strategy for the fighter jet that was unveiled last year. The roadmap allows customers to pick among a variety of newly offered options for the aircraft, including conformal fuel tanks, enhanced engines, a next generation cockpit and an enclosed weapons bay to reduce radar signature. Mark Gammon, Boeing s program manager for F/A-18 and EA-18 Growler advanced capabilities, told Defense Daily that bringing foreign partners into the process to share technology and the production of the new options gives an added incentive to buy the airplane. Industries of international customers need to have opportunities that come along with the expenditure of billions of dollars against their national treasury, Gammon said. And one of the things in the international roadmap that it lets us do in some cases is partner with those industries and co-develop some of those things. And they may end up building them. Super Hornet Photo Courtesy of Boeing They might co-develop the conformal fuel tanks with us and end up being the supplier, he added. That s a great industrial benefit for them and it also brings forward in incremental editions a capability to the airplane. A conformal fuel tank is attached to the exterior of an aircraft to add range. Boeing has no customers for the F/A-18 once the multi-year contract with the Navy is completed in 2015 and would have to face closing the production line if there aren t subsequent orders. With Lockheed Martin s [LMT] F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in line to serve as the next generation fighter for Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force, Boeing has been aggressively pursuing international sales. The multi-year deal with the Navy calls on Boeing to provide 90 F/A-18 E and F Super Hornet variants as well as 58 EA-18Gs, which are reconfigured versions of the airplane designed to carry out electronic attack. The Navy has the option of extending the buy to 196 aircraft under the contract awarded in Boeing lost Super Hornet bids in competitions held by India, and most recently by, Japan, which selected the F-35 in December. Boeing is currently entering the F/A-18 in competitions with Brazil and Malaysia as well as with potential customers in the Middle East. The U.S. government has not authorized foreign sales of the EA-18G, Continued on page 6

During its first open seas voyage, also known alpha sea trials, the Mississippi submerged for the first time and conducted high-speed runs on, and under, the surface to demonstrate that the submarine s propulsion plant is fully mission-capable, according to a statement. Mississippi is the ninth ship of the Virginia class, according to a statement. Electric Boat and its major subcontractor, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries [HII], have received contracts to build the first 18 submarines of a planned 30-ship Virginia class under a teaming agreement, according to a statement. n Boeing Pitching Flight Simulator For Carriers ST. LOUIS--Boeing [BA] says it has developed portable flight simulators that can be used by the Navy to make real training missions more efficient. The simulators have been deployed to ground stations, but Boeing is aiming to persuade the Navy to put them on aircraft carriers, said John Keeven, the company s flight simulator for Navy programs at its facility here. The simulators are small enough to occupy small areas, Keeven said. Keeven said the simulators could be assigned to carrier air wing squadrons, which could use them while stationed on land bases and transfer them to carriers before deploying. Rehearsing training missions in the simulators would maximize the use of valuable flight hours once pilots take to the skies, Keeven told Defense Daily during a visit to the facility last week. n Defense Daily (ISSN ) is published each business day by Access Intelligence, LLC.
