1 Chapter 4 ICT ad Future Lifestyles Sectio 1 New Forms of ICT Devices: After the Smartphoe This sectio focuses o three types of ICT devices wearable devices, coected vehicles ad autoomous vehicles, ad parter robots tabbed for particularly rapid growth i the ear future. We aalyze cosumer itetio to use these devices ad probe what impact the growth of these ICT devices may have o future lifestyles. 1. Wearable devices Wearable devices are ICT devices wor ad operated o the arm, head, or other parts of the body. Usig sesors, the devices collect ad trasmit biological data about the wearer. The data ca the be aalyzed i the cloud ad used to give the wearer feedback. Wearables are expected to fid a variety of applicatios i fitess, health care, ad similar fields. Wearables are also startig to be used i cojuctio with smartphoes for hads-free cotrol of apps ad for assistig work operatios i idustrial fields. (1) Iterest i usig wearables A umber of compaies have started offerig differet kids of wearable devices, ad the market is tipped for eormous growth. But how much actual awareess do cosumers have about these devices? For this report, we selected 2, moitors ad surveyed their itetios to use wearable devices. As described above, may cosumer-aimed wearable devices are expected to be used i the health field. Therefore, for the purposes of this survey, the moitors were asked about their itetio to use health maage- Figure Itetio to use health maagemet services that rely o wearable devices 13.2 met services that rely o wearable devices. More tha a third of the respodets (37.7 percet) replied that they had a itetio to use wearable devices i this cotext (total of respodets who aswered would like to use ad would cosider usig ) (Figure ). By age bracket, the 3s cohort had the highest itetio to use (total of respodets who aswered would like to use ad would cosider usig ), at over 4 percet. I geeral, the higher the age bracket, the lower the itetio to use. Oly 34.5 percet of respodets 6 ad older said they had a itetio to use health maagemet services that rely o wearable devices. We also broke dow the itetio to use figures by smartphoe users ad o-users. More tha 4 percet of smartphoe users said they had a itetio to use ( would like to use + would cosider usig ), whereas oly 32.5 percet of o-users aswered i the affirmative. These results suggest that smartphoe users have hopes for health maagemet services that rely o wearable devices as a ew use for their smartphoes (Figure ). 2 2. Coected vehicles ad autoomous vehicles (1) Coected vehicles Coected vehicles are vehicles with ICT device fuctios. Sesors o the vehicles collect may kids of data, such as the vehicle s operatioal status ad the surroudig road coditios. By accumulatig ad aalyzig these data via etworks, ew value is expected to be geerated. For example, some applicatios that are just reachig commercial viability are systems that automatically place a emergecy call i the evet of a accidet, telematics auto isurace that adjusts isurace rates based o driver behavior, ad systems that track the positio of a vehicle if stole. (2) Autoomous vehicles Almost all vehicles o the road today require the driver to maually operate the steerig wheel, accelerator pedal, ad brakes. Autoomous vehicles, i cotrast, have bee gaiig attetio lately because the vehicle drives itself safely, followig istructios, to the specified destiatio while accoutig for road ad traffic coditios without the driver directly iterveig i its operatio. Autoomous vehicles work by combiig sesig, which measures coditios ad situatios iside ad outside the vehicle, with other techologies, Figure I tetio to use autoomous vehicles such as ICT techologies ad automated vehicle cotrol techologies. Compaies are very active i pushig toward practical autoomous vehicles, but what is the actual level of iterest i autoomous vehicles amog cosumers? I our survey, we asked the moitors about their itetio to use autoomous vehicles after defiig a autoomous vehicle as a vehicle that maitais a awareess of the surroudig coditios ad drives autoomously by meas of radar ad sesors ad that ca fid the optimal route to a destiatio just by selectig the desired destiatio. The results foud that more tha half (54.6 percet) of the respodets had a itetio to use autoomous cars (total of respodets who aswered would like to use ad would cosider usig ) (Figure ). By age bracket, respodets 6 ad older had the highest itetio to use (total of respodets who aswered would like to use ad would cosider usig ), at early 6 percet. This fidig suggests that there are moutig high expectatios amog seiors for autoomous vehicles as meas of gettig aroud without the difficulty of drivig (Figure ). Parter robots The developmet of robot techology has bee primarily focused o idustrial robots that operate i factories ad plats. Domestic robots, o the other had, have bee maily the stuff of sciece fictio i.e., lifeservice robots that help with chores, caregivig, ad raisig childre i the home or serve as commuicatio parters for people ad oly a few have bee developed ito commercial products. I recet years, however, there has bee growig iterest i such robot applicatios i the life services field. The future parter robot market is predicted to skyrocket. Although Japaese corporatios have bee developig ad marketig rudimetary domestic robot products, how iterested are cosumers i them? We 22 verified the itetio to use parter robots amog cosumers with a survey that asked about three differet fields caregivig, commuicatios, ad child-raisig that are aticipated to become leadig applicatio fields for parter robots. (1) Itetio to use caregivig robots Caregivig is expected to become oe of the leadig applicatio fields for parter robots. Some prelimiary trials are already i progress to gauge the applicatio of robot techology i the caregivig field. Sice robot techology is advacig day by day, it is difficult to make a oe-size-fits-all defiitio of caregivig robots. Nevertheless, for the purposes of this survey, we assumed a

3 broad potetial for caregivig robots, i aticipatio of future techological advaces. Therefore, we asked the moitors about their level of iterest i caregivig robots after defiig a caregivig robot as a robot that fuctios to help caregivers with toiletig (attedig the care-recipiet while toiletig, chagig diapers, etc.), with bathig (attedig the care-recipiet while bathig, washig the care-recipiet, etc.), with meals (preparig meals ad assistig the care-recipiet durig meals), ad with movemet (assistig the care-recipiet whe movig from a wheelchair to a bed, toilet, bathtub, or chair), thereby reducig the caregivers workload, ad that fuctios to iform caregivig service facilities about the care-recipiet s health status via the Iteret. Whe the respodets were asked about their itetio to use caregivig robots assumig that they were the caregiver to a family member, over 6 percet (63.3 percet) replied that they had a itetio to use (total of respodets who aswered would like to use ad would cosider usig ) (Figure ). There are hopes that commuicatig with robots will stimulate people s brais ad, thus, have a prevetative effect agaist demetia ad that exercisig moderately with robots will ward off muscle atrophy ad emaciatio ad keep people from becomig bedridde. It is also possible for commuicatio robots to act as pets for people who live i places where pets are forbidde. The survey asked the moitors about their itetio to use such commuicatio robots. Robots are expected to lesse some of the child-raisig burde by talkig ad playig with childre ad watchig over them for short periods of time. Furthermore, robots ca costatly moitor a child s situatio ad, thus, potetially improve child safety. Robots may also be equipped with fuctios to check childre s health coditios, such as detectig whe a child starts to develop a fever. I the survey, we asked the moitors about their itetio to use such robots to assist child-raisig. Oly about 3 percet of the respodets replied that they had a itetio to use robots to assist child-raisig (total of respodets who aswered would like to use ad would cosider usig ). 4 Sectio 2 Trasformatios Resultig from Social Media Growth This sectio develops a uderstadig of treds i the sharig ecoomy, oe of the trasformatios resultig from social media growth. We also aalyze, by meas of a survey, cosumer iterest i the sharig ecoomy ad some the issues caused by the expasio of the sharig ecoomy. Furthermore, the broad peetratio of social media has brought with it the potetial for problematic posts to be dissemiated widely i a istat ad for posters to be exposed to uexpected social backlash. Therefore, we will examie developmets i the problems of goig viral ad flamig, as aother trasformatio resultig from social media growth, ad aalyze, by meas of a survey, user awareess of these problems ad future issues. 1. The sharig ecoomy: a ew ecoomy drive by social media (1) What is the sharig ecoomy? a travel destiatio. I both cases, more respodets replied that they have o itetio to use the services ( would ot like to use + would prefer ot to use ) (Figure ). These results idicate that may Japaese cosumers are cautious about usig these services at the preset time. We asked respodets that had replied they have o itetio to use the services (respodets who aswered would prefer ot to use or would ot like to use ) for their reasos. The most commo aswer, give by about 6 percet of the respodets, was cocer about support i the case of a accidet or other problem. This fidig shows that improvig trustworthiess is a issue for these services, as may people feel ueasy about the hadlig of accidets or other forms of trouble because the services are ufamiliar to them. Other reasos quoted by people services caot be raked sufficietly by user commets aloe ad services are more trustworthy whe provided by a compay that ca be held resposible were ot so commo, at about 1 percet ad 2 percet respectively (Figure ). This suggests that o the whole people do accept the fudametal mechaism of sharig-ecoomystyle services: i.e., the assurace of C2C service quality by meas of user commets ad rakigs. The sharig ecoomy typically refers to services that list idle assets owed by idividuals that are for hire (assets iclude skills ad other itagibles as well). The sharig ecoomy is a wi-wi situatio where leders ca ear moey from their idle assets while reters ca make use of the assets without owig them. For such services to fuctio, there has to be a assurace of trust betwee the parties. This is where social media comes ito play, with its uique ability to operate loosely arraged commuity fuctios fouded o the exchage of iformatio. Origiatig from Silico Valley, the sharig ecoomy has ow expaded globally. (2) Demad for sharig-ecoomy-style services We asked Japaese cosumers about their itetio to use two differet types of sharig-ecoomy-style services that are gaiig tractio overseas. Viral posts ad flamig o social media (1) Backgroud to the problems people s posts with their frieds (i.e., spreadig iformatio usig a fuctio such as Facebook s Like! fuctio or Twitter s retweet fuctio), ad aroud 17 percet share iformatio early every day. People 2 ad youger are slightly more likely to be sharers, but there is o appreciable differece amog the age brackets 3 ad older. The fidigs show that people i all age brackets actively share iformatio o social media (Figure ). Recetly, some posters o Twitter, Facebook, ad other social media have bee subject to severe rebukes because of a careless post. Compaies too have come uder fire uexpectedly because of a cosumer s post o social media. Such flamig icidets have draw wide attetio ad major media outlets ofte cover them. From the daw of the Iteret, thigs writte by people about themselves or others o the Iteret have caused trouble for idividuals ad compaies, so the pheomeo itself is ot ew. However, the social media flamig that has draw much attetio i recet years is distictive because it has bee fueled by the fuctioality of Twitter, Facebook, ad other social media. I particular, the social media fuctios that make it easy to share other people s posts you like with frieds have led to careless posts goig viral, where a post spreads rapidly to a extremely broad audiece due to the chai reactio of sharig the post. Aother factor that has give rise to flamig is the ease of postig cotroversial photos take with smartphoes o social media. (3) Criteria for decidig whether to share iformatio The ext questio we asked is by what criteria do social media users select iformatio to share. The most frequet respose, give by 46.2 percet of respodets, was whether I feel a emotioal coectio with the iformatio, followed by whether the iformatio is iterestig, with a respose rate of 4.4 percet. Coversely, whether the iformatio is very credible was metioed relatively ifrequetly, at 23.5 percet (Figure ). These results suggest that social media users ted to select iformatio to share based o whether they fid the iformatio empathic or iterestig more that whether it is factual. We also preset spe- cific examples of the potetial of telework by presetig the results of iterview surveys with actual teleworkers. 1. Telework awareess levels amog compaies ad employed people Oe of the reasos telework has ot take off is believed to be a lack of awareess about telework as a viable work style. To test this hypothesis, we surveyed the telework awareess levels amog compaies ad employed people. (1) Compay awareess of telework is aroud 4 percet Oly 4 percet of the surveyed compaies replied that they kew about telework (Figure ). I geeral, the more employees a compay had, the higher the awareess level. The awareess level amog compaies with 31 or more employees was about 7 percet, compared to about 3 percet amog compaies with 5 or fewer employees. The awareess level was sigificatly higher amog ICT compaies, at just uder 7 percet, tha compaies i other idustries. Of these respodets, about 3 percet aswered I have heard the term but I do t kow what it meas, which idicates that oly a miority of people uderstad the telework cocept (Figure ). These results highlight that telework awareess levels are ot particularly high, beig less tha 5 percet amog compaies ad employed people alike. 7 2. Employed people s itetio to use telework We ext surveyed the itetio to use telework amog employed people. We asked this questio after explaiig the telework cocept to respodets who did ot kow about telework before the survey. We also asked respodets who do ot work i a eviromet where telework is available whether they would like to use telework, assumig a work eviromet that permitted telework. work, actively wat to use telework, ad would like to try usig telework added up to more tha 5 percet of all respodets (Figure ). This result idicates that may people have at least a latet desire to use telework. Eve amog respodets who had aswered they do ot kow about telework to the previous questio, more tha 4 percet said that they actively wat to use telework or would like to try usig telework (Figure ). This suggests that if the geeral public were more aware of telework as a ew viable work style, more people would probably wat to work by telework. Accordig to the New 4K / 8K Promotio Roadmap, released by MIC i September 214, trial 4K / 8K will begi o broadcastig satellites (BS) i 216 ad practical will begi as early as possible before 218 o BS ad other televisio delivery systems. The ed goal is to foster coditios to popularize 4K / 8K techology ad eable may viewers to watch 4K / 8K programs o commercially available televisio sets by the time the 22 Tokyo Games are held (Figure ).
