He informed me of a potential matching grant project with his Rotary Club to provide clean drinking water to eight primary schools and communities in the Issan region of Thailand. He explained that while these schools had a reliable water source, either a deep well or a municipal system, the water sources all contained a concentration of heavy metals and arsenic. He had identified a locally available filtration system that would filter out these impurities and provide clean drinking water to the children, teachers and community. With a contribution from the Rotary Clubs of Siri -Ubon and Marquette, a match from District 6220 and an additional match from The Rotary Foundation we were able to raise the US$16,500 necessary to provide a water purification system for the eight schools. The schools and local community jointly have access to the water and are jointly responsible for the testing and maintenance of the filtration systems. The schools and communities will do periodic testing of the water and will change the filters periodically to maintain the supply of clean water. The filters will cost approximately $150 and it is estimated that they will need to be change one to three times per year as determined by testing. The cost of the filters will be the responsibility of the schools and communities. Our Foundation dollars are now providing clean drinking water for eight schools and communities. With 300 students per school, plus teachers and community, conservatively 1,500 people will benefit from this clean water at each location. At least 12,000 people will gain the benefit of clean drinking water for years into the future for an investment of $16,500. Not a bad investment if for only one year! In mid February Dan Kuzlik, a member of the Rotary Club of Rhinelander, and I travelled to Thailand to participate in the ceremony turning over some of these water purification systems to the schools and communities. It was extremely rewarding to see the students who will benefit from this project and equally rewarding to see the cooperation of the schools and communities to operate and maintain the system. Community leaders were present at each of the ceremonies and their appreciation to Rotary for the clean water was clearly evident. You can see many more pictures at gallery.me.com/jweting. At this address you can also see pictures of our beautiful granddaughter Makena Paige Bennett born on 03 December 2008! (Okay, I will pay an advertising fine!) I want to sincerely thank each of you who contribute to the Rotary Foundation. I hope that you feel your dollars have been well utilized. Please continue to support the Foundation; projects such as this one are funded through the Annual Program Fund. That means these funds need to be contributed annually. Your continued support is appreciated and needed. Thank you, John Weting Rotary Club of Marquette john.weting@charter.net 2 RI 6220 Newsletter 2

3 District News Antigo Rotary Club Efforts Benefit African Children The Antigo Rotary Club was awarded a matching grant of $44 thousand dollars from the Rotary Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to provide safe drinking water and athletic facilities to a primary school in Katani, Kenya. The Rotary Club of Nairobi Kenya will work with the local club to ensure the project objectives of the grant are accomplished. According to Brian Prunty, a long-time member of the Antigo club, We are so pleased to be awarded this grant. The school has 200 students, many of whom are HIV/AIDS orphans. These orphans not only attend the school to learn, but also call it home. The facility has dormitories for the children without parents. While the school has access to a well, it is not safe to drink the water due to unsafe mineral content. This grant will provide a rain water collection and storage system. The rain water will be reserved for human consumption, while well water will continue to be used for washing clothes and bathing. The school is situated in an area of very poor soils, and organized athletic activity is not possible unless the area is leveled, excavated, and new soil brought in. Athletic facilities are deemed critical because the school is not just a school, but home to many needy children. The second part of the grant is being used to provide for a sports and athletic field with a running track, basketball court, and soccer field for students. The matching grant is the result of a local fundraising effort among club members. According to Prunty, The members of the Antigo Rotary Club have been so generous. Every dollar we raised was matched first by our Rotary district, and then the club and district funds were once again matched by the Rotary Foundation. As a result, every dollar contributed by a club member turned into four. International service is nothing new for the local club. Prunty stated this is the third matching grant the club was awarded to benefit youth in Africa. In addition, since 1981 the Antigo club has hosted 38 in-bound foreign high school students and sponsored 32 Antigo high school students so they could study abroad for one year. Persons interested in finding out more about Rotary should feel free to contact Brian Prunty at Or, if you want to learn more about hosting an in-bound foreign exchange student for 4 months, contact John Ebel at Press Release originally sent January 27, RI 6220 Newsletter 3

4 District News District in Thailand Thanks Marquette Rotary We have just completed the handover of the project provided eight rural schools... with charcoal activated/catalytic resin filtration systems to provide clean water for students, teachers and villagers. It was a successful activity and received excellent cooperation from all participant rural schools and beneficiary communities. My great friend, John Weting, had been interviewed by the local newspaper, the Mining Journal. We discovered that the demand for clean water for our people especially children is huge and urgent. Thanks to the dedication and sincere support of District 6220 and the Rotary Club of Marquette of this very important Rotary Program. Regards, Prapart Sudhipongpracha, PDG, International Service Chairman Rotary Club of Sri-Ubon, R.I. District 3340: THAILAND CLK ROTARY ANNOUNCES EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP Submitted By Kevin N. Store, President CLK Rotary Club (Calumet) The Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw Rotary Club recently announced creation of an education scholarship to be available for both the CLK Public Schools and the Lake Linden High School. Kevin Store, CLK Rotary President, said that the scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to young people pursuing vocational training and education in a trades specific field. We are focusing our support for the young person that wants to go on and pursue additional training in a non-academic field that young person that wants to become auto technician or maybe a cosmetologist, Store said. The idea according to Store was to award two scholarships each year to students from Calumet and Lake Linden High Schools who pursue post-high school education. These scholarships are intended to promote the development of students who may not otherwise qualify for scholarship support based on academic or athletic achievement and whose goal it is to obtain associate degrees or technical training pursuant to a career objective that is well defined and realistic. Rotary Roundup (continued) To fund this project, the CLK Rotary will be hosting its Annual Spaghetti Dinner on March 7th. This dinner, in conjunction with the Great Bear Chase ski race, will be held at the Irish Times Restaurant in downtown Laurium from 4:30 8p. Store said the price per ticket is $8 each and children 5 and under will eat free all proceeds will be used to fund the education scholarships. We really need the community support for this project and hope to have a good turnout from the parents and families of students of both school systems. Said, Store. Tickets are available from any CLK Rotarian, at the door, or by calling Tom at or Kevin at Major sponsors of this dinner include the Irish Times Pub and Restaurant, Pats IGA, and Louie s Super Foods. At 5pm we ll gather to reflect on what brings us together Making Dreams Real. With songs and stories from the traditions of Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Christianity, we will celebrate our shared beliefs of service, goodwill and world peace. We will remember those members of our Rotary family no longer with us. Let there be peace on earth Put on your party duds (remember city slicker fancy clothes are not allowed) and come on down to the barn for dinner before the hoedown. Yes, we ll have a little more of that Rotary talk, award some Roundup Trophies, say our thank yous and start to say good bye. But it s not Happy Trails yet. Daddy D and the Country Classics Show starts at 8pm. Sing, dance and laugh till the moon comes over the mountain. Sunday morning with coffee in hand, our minds filled with projects, our spirits transformed and renewed, our hearts overflowing with the smiles of friends, we ll gather once again. Yes, we are winning against Polio. Yes, we are sharing the gift of literacy, clean water and a bowl of food. Yes, we are Rotarians and this is what we do. Yes, we are Making Dreams Real. Happy Trails, until we meet again. Tom and Carolyn So why come to this 6220 Rotary Roundup? We ll have two days and evenings of real action packed, double barreled fellowship, learning and fun. 5 District News RI Credit Card Rotary Foundation Update Did You Know? When Rotary International credit card holders use their cards, a portion of the purchase amount will go straight to Rotary s US$100 Million Challenge. All royalties raised for the three years beginning 1 July 2008 will go directly to the challenge grant under a June RI Board decision. For an instant club-level fundraiser, all those who apply in the United States and charge $75 within the first 90 days of receiving the card will earn $25 for their Rotary clubs. Cardholders in the United States and Canada will also receive up to 1 percent cash back on their purchases. (The card is available in more than a dozen countries, and terms and member benefits vary.) By John Weting, 6220 Foundation Chair Did you know that in the Rotary Year The Rotarians in District 6220 contributed approximately $112,000? Did you know that in , 50% of the monies ($56,000) we contributed to the Foundation in were returned to the District in the form of District Designated Funds (DDF)? The DDF is what the district can use to match Rotary Club monies to fund local and international projects. Did you know that in we used those monies to fund Power Flour projects in Mexico and South America so that children will have better nutrition, sent surplus medical supplies to other parts of the world, funded a water purification project in Thailand to provide potable water to eight schools and their community, funded two Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars to India and Sweden, and funded a Group Study Exchange with Morocco? None of these projects could have been funded without the financial support of Rotarians to The Rotary Foundation? The needs both locally and globally are endless and today even more so. With our creative imaginations, the needs that we find in the world and the funds we invest in The Rotary Foundation we can John Weting accomplish great things and improve thousands of lives at home and around the world. I sincerely thank the 60% of the District 6220 Rotarians who contribute to The Rotary Foundation and continue to give. To the 40% who have never contributed please give. Just two dollars a week can change someone else s life. What will the two dollars mean to you? You can contribute on-line at If you need assistance contact me and I will walk you through the steps. Thank you for your support of The Rotary Foundation! Since the affinity card program launched in 2000, $6.5 million has been raised for The Rotary Foundation. Cardholders don t have to be Rotarians, so your friends and family members can also help by using the card for their purchases. RI allows its banking partners, Bank of America and MBNA Canada, to use the Rotary club membership list in the United States and Canada. Rotarians who don t want to be contacted can be placed on an opt-out list by mailing their name, address, and phone number to Robert Mintz, manager of RI s Corporate Relations and Global Travel Division, or ing the information to robert.mintz@rotary.org. Did you know that in this Rotary year over 800 Rotarians in District 6220 have NEVER contributed to The Rotary Foundation! If those Rotarians contributed just $2 per week for 50 weeks (take a two week vacation) our District would have an additional $40,000 in DDF to use on projects? That additional $40,000 could provide Power Flour to many more children, send more surplus medical supplies around the world, provide more safe drinking water, fund PolioPlus immunizations, fund an additional Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, fund an additional GSE team or fund a yet requested project to improve lives in some part of our global community. 6 District News Good-Bye Polio By Mary Jo Berner, AG, Area 8, Rotary Club of Eagle River Only 20 years ago, India was known as a country of snake charmers, poor people, and Mother Teresa. Only 20 years ago, India also was a country where polio paralyzed or killed 1,000 babies and children every week. In 2005, India reported only ONE case of polio per week. How did India achieve a 99 per cent decline in polio cases in less than 20 years? The bumper sticker above tells the story. Rotarians like us have donated our time and money to help immunize more than two billion children around the world. Rotary s campaign against polio began in 1979 with a commitment to buy and help deliver vaccine to six million children in the Philippines. Rotary International (RI) publicly launched its PolioPlus program in 1986, pledging to immunize all the world s children against the dreaded disease and eradicate polio from the world by Rotarian Mary Jo Berner squeezes drop of polio vaccine onto baby s tongue during NID on platform at train station in Samastipur, while Samastipur Rotarian volunteers and members of Mary Jo s team look on. This photo appeared in the Hindustan newspaper. When I joined the National Immunization Team (NID) effort in the Indian state of Bihar in January, 2006, I learned that Rotary had not met its goal of total eradication: four countries remained on the list where the disease is endemic. India is one of those countries and Bihar is one of the dwindling number of geographic areas with wild polio virus. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and whose foundation has contributed millions of dollars to polio eradication, visited Delhi, India, late last year and commented, Despite the challenges, I m more convinced than ever that India will lead the way to the successful eradication of polio. In 2008, Rotary raised $57 million. Participation by Rotarians is critical; each club is challenged to organize a public fundraising event annually for the next three years. Indian Rotarian holding marked finger of child just immunized with polio vaccine at train station in Samastipur, Bihar, India. RI asks each club to donate $ to the cause by the end of December, District 6220 PolioPlus Chair John Morris a polio survivor himself is going to great lengths to inspire us to carry on the campaign to wipe out polio by setting the bar even higher: $200, from our district. Morris reminds us that eradication of polio is Rotary s Number One goal. We are in the home stretch of our quest to remove polio from our world, but the job is not done yet and we need everyone s help to reach the finish line. I have to admit I went on the NID trip to India primarily because of the adventure potential. But I returned convinced that we as Rotarians must fulfill our mission to get rid of this dreaded disease. The least each of us can do, and should do, is make sure our clubs meet the goal of $ by December 31, If we have the resources to make individual monetary contributions, we should do so. India remains a nation of snake charmers, poor people, and Mother Teresa. But it s also the nation of Mahatma Gandhi, who exhorts us as follows: Recall the face of the poorest and most helpless person you have even seen and ask yourself: is the next step I contemplate going to be of any use to that person? 6 RI 6220 Newsletter 6
