2 Objective of Scholarship Programs To financially assist the BEST candidates in undertaking or continuing graduate studies (approx. 80% + average) Success rates between 20% and 30%

3 For Students in SSH Education and Business Fonds de recherche du Québec Société et Culture Master s scholarships (17.5K per year, first six semesters) Doctoral scholarships (21K per year, first nine semesters) Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Master s scholarships (17.5K, one year, non-renewable)* Doctoral scholarships (20K/35K per year for 3-4 years)* *Not yours to take wherever you want. This scholarship is awarded by the host university

This scholarship is awarded by the host university

6 Research Abroad and Special Themes Many funding agencies have supplements to help defray the extra costs of studying abroad Special thematic awards or awards in partnership with private or public organizations are sometimes offered (transport, energy, francophonie, workrelated accidents and illnesses, etc.)

9 Eligibility Criteria Applicants with an undergraduate or Master s degree Citizenship and residence (each agency has its specific criteria) Minimum cumulative average for provincial funding agencies Master s or PhD programs with important research component Number of semesters completed Training location (Québec, Canada, abroad)

10 o Academic excellence (50%) Evaluation Criteria o Quality of the academic record o Duration of studies o Distinctions, prizes, awards o Research skills and relevant research experience o Scientific quality of the proposed research (30%) o Communication, personal characteristics and leadership skills (extracurricular activities) (20%)

11 Application Procedure o Applicant must complete and submit online application forms available on the funding agencies websites (PIN required) o Applicants must submit additional required documents such as letters of recommendation, proof of citizenship or immigration status, transcripts as PDF attachment(s) to the online application forms. o The application package must be submitted electronically by the applicant directly to the funding agency (except for SSHRC and NSERC Doctoral applications) o Applications maybe completed in French or in English o For Quebec agencies, the title must be in French o Incomplete application packages will be deemed ineligible by the agencies

12 Tips for Success Present a well-defined research proposal Use clear and concise language Clearly explain the originality of your proposal and its contribution to the field Ask your professor(s) to read and comment on your application Contact me if you have questions on the application process DO NOT prepare your application at the last minute.

13 What s Next? Start working on your application asap Read all the documents about the program on the agency website Talk to your professors about possible institutions, supervisors and projects Contact the Records Office for transcripts Contact professors for letters of reference (if required) Register in the agency s online system(s) Complete the online form(s) Prepare and attach the additional documents required Bring me a copy of your application package for review at least two weeks before the deadline Submit your application online for Master s scholarships (to the Research Office for NSERC and SSHRC Doctoral scholarships)
